Best Focus Groups Nationwide To Supplement Your Income

Updated on January 19, 2014

How Focus Groups Discovered Us

The reason that I am sharing this information is that there are people who are finding a creative way to make extra income. There are a lot of rumors that paid focus groups solicitations are just ways to sell you products. We participate in focus groups, and I have not spent a dime in my endeavor. Instead, it's provided some needed spending money for my family members.

My family accidentally became familiar with paid focus groups and medical studies during my pregnancy, when I was a perfect candidate for a medical study on stress and premature delivery. I was monitored monthly at Cedar Sinai, and not only was I compensated, I received videotapes and photographs of my children as fetuses. I felt so fortunate to be part of the group, going to the same ante-natal unit as mothers with high risk pregnancies carrying twins and triplets. Both my children were then examined after their births, received IQ tests at age 6, and at the age of 6 or 7, completed brain MRIs at UC Irvine. At each visit, they were obligated to inform me about any abnormality. If it weren't for superior care that I received, I wouldn't have known I had to be bed-ridden for both pregnancies.

When my son turned 1, he was asked to learn simple tasks from candidates who were going to be certified to test small children as part of a study for the benefit of preschool. Somehow, these groups shared databases, and eventually we were asked to participate in non-medical focus groups.

Valued Opinions for Business

The best thing about corporations is that they will allot money to seek your opinion. Good companies will do this as part of their research and development. They want to know what different demographics or segments of population think. And they will pay for your time.

When there was the controversial finger in the chili, Wendy's wanted to know what the public thought. How would you like to eat at 3 fast food restaurants, be reimbursed for it, and then talk about your eating experience?

When Shutterfly launched its Photobook, it wanted those people who created one online to talk about the process.

Mazda wanted to study the public opinion before it launched its crossovers.

Canon wanted public opinion about videocameras. In this study, the participants were shown state-of-the art videocameras. Also, the participants ranging from professional photographers to mothers gave their opinions on the feeling of capturing memories.

The first brain-controlled game manufacturer wanted to watch children test their gears.

Disney exploring a new adventure video game idea.

Haier wanted the opinions of homeowners who love having 2 refrigerators on the new mid-range refrigerators and their different styles.

Types of Focus Groups

Research and marketing companies carry out their clients' wishes in conducting interviews and focus groups. Some will send their own representatives to your home and conduct home interviews and essentially use the research and marketing companies as facilitators. Others will conduct and tape the group interviews. In the higher tech facilities, there are rooms that have fake mirrors where research personnels watch the interviews and also take notes. They will even speak to the moderator through ear-pieces.

As for the online focus groups, they have live chats where a moderator asks a question and expects individuals on computers to "chat," while others involve sending the individual a product and then the individual has to fill out a questionnaire online. Whatever form it takes, the bottom-line is that you are paid for your opinion.

Focus Point Global

Los Angeles and Ten Other Locations

This company administers focus groups in various forms, online surveys and in-person group interviews. Once you are on the mailing list, they will send you surveys to determine whether you qualify. If you do not want to wait for their email, you can go directly to their listings and determine whether you fit the gender, age, and other qualifying factors. When Focus Group Global generally wants to speak to the child, it's very difficult to secure one of these spots, which I suspect go to stay-at-home moms who return their children home immediately. My experience with any research and marketing company, if it's a popular study and you have to call them back, the spots may not be there. I had linked current studies available; however, I was warned that I may be unpublished for doing that, and so, you will have to go direct to their site to peruse the current studies.

Final Words Regarding These Highly Legitimate Paid Focus Groups

Children's studies generally pay $50 to $125 for 1-2 hours; adults' studies start at $100 for 1-2 hours. Some will provide refreshment and meals as well as free parking. They choose from different demographics, and thus, after every participation, these companies hand out flyers to recruit friends and family members. You can also find listings at, where you can search using the phrase "focus group." Also, when you attend a focus group, you will meet other individuals there who may know other reputable research and marketing companies. If you have an opinion, why not be compensated?

I appreciate your comments. Since I have written this article, I have found it more difficult to be in a focus group. I am happy for those who are selected. Thanks for sharing your link.

Great article! I am also a fan of paid focus groups. I have participated in a few myself and find this one of the easiest ways to make some extra money! Here is a useful directory that also has a lot of paid focus group listings:

Annette Hendley, I am glad that you signed up with one of the UK focus groups. We all have opinions, and it is fun to be paid for such opinion and be the first to learn about a product or something that a business may be interested in.

AlexK2009, thanks for your comment. There has always been a demand for market research. In addition to being in the United States, we are specifically in Los Angeles and we are in cutting edge of seeing new Disney electronic products. Focus Point Global in Los Angeles has a focus on children's studies but also has international locations, and you can still earn a little bit of money by possibly qualifying for its paid surveys.

Well written article. I can see the value of focus groups as a market research tool. They usually pay well. I have joined one here in the UK, but there is actually a lot of criteria you have to met before they accept you.

Thank you for your kind words, prospectboy. I moved this article from Squidoo because it locked the article for a reason that I couldn't understand. Instead of putting myself at their mercy in the next 60 days before they ultimately, I figure that I am better off sharing the information and deleting it from the Squidoo site, which has site been on a rampage to auto-lock innocent non-spamming writers. They are just trying to find scapegoats for its declining traffic. I could have told you that 2 years ago, the top 100 Squidoo articles were mostly product placement articles. I even told Squidoo that it is not overly promotional since this year, I have not qualified for a focus group.

So, I am hoping that you check to see if you can put yourself on the mailing list. In late 2012, my husband qualified for a 3-part survey and earned $350. I was truly impressed with his ability since he loves to comment on kitchens and kitchen appliances. Thanks again for visiting.

In a time where almost everyone is trying to supplement their income, organizations such as the ones you wrote about in this article are gaining in popularity. I've never participated in a focus group, so I love how well written and detailed this article is. You done a really great job of explaining your points, and informing readers. Definitely voted up, rated useful, and shared. Great work!
