Best Gift Cards to Give to Anyone

Updated on April 29, 2013

Get Your Own Gift!

These days, it's rather hard to shop for our loved ones. It's been simply easier to let them buy their own gifts. I think the reason for that is due to the fear of giving them something they plainly just don't want. However, in a day and age where it's simple to just buy a gift card, you may want to at least show you care a little bit by giving them something that shows them "I know you kind of want this, but just take this money and go get it."

While there are Visa gift cards that can be used just about anywhere, if you feel your friend, family member, or that someone special wants the gift to be a bit more specific, you can get gift cards to just about anywhere. Here's a few ideas of some gift cards.

Amazon Gift Cards

Amazon is probably the best thing that has ever happened to online shopping. It's cheap, convenient, and they have just about everything you need. Plus, in the event you want to make a present a bit snazzier, you can combine a gift card with something else. For example, if you wanted to buy a kindle for that reader in your family, you may want to get a gift card so they can load it up with every kind of book they like to read. Personally, that may work best, because it shows you care a lot more than just throwing a card at them and saying "go get it yourself."

And the Kindle isn't the only thing this works for. You can buy an IPad and give them a card to load it with movies, or an XBox/Playstation with a gift card to buy games. Not only are the gift cards a nice gift to give, they are extremely complimentary to whatever it is that you're buying.

For The Fancy Dresser

Personally, my favorite clothing store is Kohl's. They've got about everything you need at reasonable prices, and they're just about everywhere. From dress up clothes, to dress down clothes, they have it. I've gotten dress shirts for weddings there, as well as pajamas, lounge clothes, beach clothes, shoes, ties, socks, etc. Not only that, they are very stylish, and work well whether you're an adult, kid, man, woman, or uh, both? I'll get off my soap box on Kohl's, since they don't reimburse me for any of this, but I'm just putting it out there.

There's more options than that, though. Kohl's, Old Navy, Forever 21, Rue 21, American Eagle, Aeropostale, and many many more.

For the Techy, Geeky Person

I really don't want to state the obvious, but who wouldn't want to go on a shopping spree at Best Buy? Or download from hundreds of games on XBox Live? You can go low dollar, if you'd like and they can buy movies, or load them up so they can buy a new TV, stereo, IPad, or whatever geeky tech stuff is out there now. There's something for everyone, and everyone LOVES tech stuff.

As mentioned before, this is another opportunity to combine gifts for someone. Buy an IPod and give them an ITunes gift card. Buy them an XBox and hook them up with XBox Live points. You can get as creative as you'd like.

For That Special Someone

Here's where it gets tricky. You have to get a gift card that shows that you know what they like, even if you don't know exactly how to get it for them. For instance, if you know their favorite clothing store is American Eagle, but don't know what shirt they'd like, get them an American Eagle gift card. Or, you can get them a gift card for something that wouldn't be practical for giving as a gift. Does he or she have an obsession with Starbucks? Get them a Starbucks gift card. It's a lot more reasonable than giving them a cup of coffee. Do you want to take him or her out to a restaurant of your choice, but don't have the time? Let them know you want to take them out soon with a gift card to that restaurant. There's essentially an unlimited amount of options here. You can give a gift card for the movies.

Here's a thought as well, and it works extremely well with gift cards. You want to take her out on a date, and you want it to be awesome, so here's what you do: Buy a gift card for a nice clothing store, and tell her take it and pick out a nice outfit, whatever she wants. Then get her an iTunes gift card and tell her to load their iPod up with every song she wants to hear tonight. Then take her out to dinner (don't use a gift card for that, that's cheesy unless you already have one), then to the movie of her choice, which, again you probably don't want to use a gift card for.

Same thing goes for your son or daughter with their spouse/significant other. Set them up for a date night in the same way. A gift card for clothes, then a gift card to the restaurant that you and your husband or wife have always loved dining at. Then a gift card for the movies. It's much more creative than throwing money at them, and sets the night up for a great time for them.

In Conclusion

There's plenty of ways to show someone that you care. As I said before, you CAN give someone you care about a gift card, but do it in a way that shows that you care about them. This was only some of the ideas I had off the top of my head. Feel free to share your gift card ideas below, whether this article got you thinking of ways to do it, or if you have a story to tell, I'd like to hear. Take care, and good luck finding that special gift.
