What Internet Marketing Is

Updated on August 22, 2016

So, you have heard the rumor about people who make a living online without doing much at all? You have probably thought to yourself that this rumor has to be untrue. Well, not exactly. There are a lot of people who earn cash online without doing much at the moment. However, it should be no surprise that they have done a lot of work to get where they are today. The term used for this is passive income. The good news is that just about everyone can create their own passive income today, because the methods and tecniques that are used are not difficult to learn. It can be a lot of work sometimes, but it is not difficult. In this hub I will explain the basics of how the big guys do it.

The biggest advantage of making a living by doing what I am about to tell you, is that it can be done completely free. You don’t need to have a big bankroll to start off in this industry. Actually, it is probably better to start of with the free alternatives when you are learning the ins and outs.

That said, if you do have some starting money it can help you quite a bit. In this hub I will only focus on the free options out there, so that you can be certain that this is not any scam.

Internet Marketing

So what is this “secret” way to passive income that I am talking about? It is what is called Internet Marketing. In essence it means to promote a website so that it gets more visitors. Once the site gets more visitors, it has the potential to make more money. There are a lot of different ways for a site to earn cash through its visitors. The most popular way is probably through a completely free program that is called adsense. This is a program that Google runs. It delivers ads to any page that has installed the adsense code. Every time a visitor clicks one of the ads, the owner of the site earns some money. Other ways of making money is through affiliate sales, direct sale of ads on the site or through selling the websites own products.

Traffic That Converts

So, how can we ensure that a lot of people click the ads that are shown on our site? Well, there are two things that has to be in place. The first thing is that our site actually has visitors. Without visitors, or a good plan to get visitors, the whole business idea is dead. The second thing is that we have the right kind of visitors.

“The right kind of visitors?”

Yeah, the right kind. If you think through what different people are doing on the internet, it is actually quite obvious which group is most likely to click ads. Is it the people who are constantly using social media such as facebook, twitter, and myspace? Nope. These guys may create some revenue, but they are not focused enough. Is it the guys who are actually interested in reading what we write about? Not usually. If we want to base our revenue on these people, we need to be very targeted in waht we sell/market. I’ll tell you who the best visitors are: the guys who search for information on the search engines. These are the guys that are actually looking for something. Often they can find just that on one of the ads on out site.

When someone enters you site through one or the other channel, but leave through a channel that makes you money, we say that the traffic converts. What we really mean is that a reader has converted to income for us.

SEO

Ok, but how can we get more people to find our site through the search engines? This is actually not so hard at all. We use techniques that are referred to as search engine optimization or SEO. If you want to learn how to earn cash online, SEO is the way to go.

SEO is often split into two parts, on page and off page optimization. The on and off refers to things that are done on the site and things that are done off the site. If we start with the on page optimization, there are some techniques here that can drastically improve the ranking of your site. Actually, we can go so far as to say that without good on page optimization, we will have no chance at ranking high at the SERPs.

Keywords

Before we start, there is a basic concept of how the search engines work that needs to be said. This concept is what we call keywords. The search engines ranks everything by keywords. For example, you might do a search for “earn cash online free”. The search engine then returns a list of pages that has this string of keywords included on the page in some way. The rankings of the results are based on which of the pages is best optimized for this same string of keywords. If you search for a similar term, like “earn cash online fast”, you might get totally different results because you would now get the pages that are best optimized for this string of keywords. However, search engines do have some kind of system that allows them to recognize words and strings of word that means the same.

A single word is referred to as a "keyword" while a sting of words is referred to as a "keyword phrase."

On Page Optimization

Ok, now that we know what keywords are we can start with on page optimization. This might look very easy, but it is very important. These are the simple things that should be implemented on your site for it to be well optimized.

1. The keyword should be in your URL.
2. The keyword should be in the title.
3. The keyword should be in the description.
4. The keyword should be in the content.

That’s about everything you need to know about on page optimization. If you implement these things on your site, you will notice that the site will do a solid jump up the rankings. Yes, there are several other things you can do, but these are the most important ones.

While it is important that you use your keyword relatively often, it is just as important that you don't overdo it. Over-optimized sites will be penalized by the search engines.

Off Page Optimization

That seemed pretty easy, right? Yup, now lets get on with the off page optimization. This is where the work starts. The principles are very easy, but it takes a lot of time and effort to do everything correct.

Off page optimization boils down to one thing; backlinks. Backlinks are links that comes from other sites. However, it is not enough to just have a lot of backlinks, you need to have keyword anchored backlinks. This means that the links that you get should have the keyword that you are optimizing for in the anchor text. There are plenty of ways to build links to your site. It does, as mentioned, require some work, and a lot of people are not willing to put that work in. This means that you will have a big advantage if you are willing to step up to the plate. You will find a few resources in the links section of this hub. This is by far the best way to earn some extra cash online, or even make an online income that you can live of.
