Full Review Citi Hilton Hhonors Reserve Card

Updated on August 14, 2014

So You're Considering a New Credit Card

Maybe you're like me and you're interested in using your credit score to open up new adventures and opportunities... Or you're interested in getting a new rewards card so that you at least get something back for all your loyal usage?

Well, if you have excellent credit, and you like to travel, then the Citi Hilton Hhonors Reserve Card should be on your short list of potential new credit cards.

IMPORTANT UPDATE: As of the article's writing, you could signup for the card and get a $100 statement credit if you stay at a Hilton property within the first 3 months.

Full Review

The Good

$100 statement credit after staying at a Hilton property within your first 3 months - The biggest weakness of this credit card is the annual fee, but if you can sign up and get this $100 statement credit then it neutralizes the annual fee. Eureka!

Hilton Hhonors Gold Status - If you travel a lot then you're probably already aware of Hilton Gold status. In the grand scheme of things, you basically get free breakfast and free Wifi internet at Hilton properties, bonus Hilton points or perks when staying at Hilton properties, priority check-in, and greater potential for room upgrades.

Hilton Gold Status is the biggest perk of this card, and as of this writing, the only other credit card which will get you Hilton Gold status is the AMEX Reserve card. I've stayed at a Hilton property and got the following because of my Gold status:

-free upgrade to a suite

-free snacks and drinks upon check-in

-additional snacks when there was an issue with the first room I was checked into

-free Wifi and breakfast

When using this for business or leisure travel, it's a great option to know that if I stay at a Hilton I give myself a chance for lots of free perks and improved service!

Bonus Hhonors points when booking Hilton - You get 10x Hhonors points when booking with your Citi card. This has actually come in handy because so far, Hilton rates have been essentially the same as you'll find with a travel site like Kayak, Expedia, Travelocity...

2 Free Weekend Nights - The biggest sign up perk of all are 2 free weekend nights at almost any Hilton property to use Fri-Sun. To get these, you have to spend $2500 on your card over 4 months. If you consider that you can actually get 2 free weekend nights at Waldorf Astoria or Conrad locations in major cities like New York, Chicago, Seoul, Paris then this is a tremendous perk! Imagine using these nights during peak travel seasons to see The Super Bowl or New Year's Eve in the Big Apple combined with your Gold status and it makes for a turnkey mini-getaway.

Poll Question

Are you willing to pay an annual fee on a credit card?

And The Bad

Annual Fee - My policy has always been to stay away from annual fee cards. BUT if you can get the $100 statement credit then that's going to cancel out your annual fee for the first year. As you compare this card with other elite rewards cards, then you'll want to strongly consider a comparable card without an annual fee.

Hilton points are undervalued - Unless you're using this card to reserve Hilton stays then the points are essentially useless.

About DealForALiving

I believe that being frugal and making smart money choices is like any other exercise. As we continue to practice good habits in saving money where possible, finding deals for what we want, and having a good time at it, then we become better at dealing for a living.

I'm committed to sharing my experiences with getting the most out of using credit cards, saving and spending tips, and I might even add a slice of perspective without trying to be a psychoanalyst like some other personal finance folks out there.

Please let me know what you think and if you'd like to hear my take on a specific topic.

Most Sincerely,

The Verdict: Thumbs Up

If you like staying at Hilton properties the way I do, you'll love the free Gold Hhonors status and the 2 free weekend night stays. Make sure you get the $100 statement credit to cancel out the annual fee and enjoy the benefits of a top-flight rewards card!
