Going Green Tip #1

Updated on June 7, 2010

Though Times

I am a single mother and I always operate my life on a budget. The less money I have to spend on a quality product the better. Also, there is no doubt that we are facing tough ecnomic times. Gas prices are starting to drop but they are still quiet high. The prices on good and services are constantly going up as well. On top of our groing ecnomic issues, we are all becoming more aware of our enviroment. We are finally realizing as a whole that this is the only Earth we have and we need to take care of it.

Freecycle is a great answer.

Freecycle is one of the best answers to all of these problems. With freecycle you are not only saving your purse but you can help others and t he enviroment at the same time. Other than hubpages, I've been a freecycle addict. I use freecycle as my FIRST reasource when I am looking to get rid of things and to find things. With freecycle I can have fun "shopping" and be completely guilt free.

What is Freecycle?

TheFreecycle Network page says it the best:

The Freecycle NetworkTM is made up of 4,619 groups with 6,013,000 members across the globe. It's a grassroots and entirely nonprofit movement of people who are giving (& getting) stuff for free in their own towns. It's all about reuse and keeping good stuff out of landfills. Each local group is moderated by a local volunteer (them's good people). Membership is free.

The best way I can discribe freecycle is that it is a giant network of "Friends" trading. Instead of throwing thigns away or selling it, you can simply post it and give it to someone needing it. Also, if your in need of an item you can post and hopefully someoe may have the item to give.

Is freecycle just junk given away?

No way! The Freecycle Network is full of items. Of course the items are dependant on what the person wishes to post, but you can find just about anything. Here's a short list of things I've received from freecycle

  • Clothes (Adult and children)
  • Toys
  • Outdoor play equpment
  • Crib
  • Bassent
  • Washer & Dryer
  • Books
  • Furniture

Also here's a short list of things I've posted to freecycle.

  • Clothes
  • Toys
  • Shoes
  • Books
  • School supplies
  • cookware
  • Yarn

How does it work?

You simply visit and sign up. It's free. It's quick. It's easy. Once you sign up you will be granted access to the listings. If your looking for an item list it. There is not item too big or too small to list. I'f your cleaning out your attic, make a ist and post the items as well.

Eco Friendly

Well its obvious that freecycle is great for a person on a budget. What better price is there than "Free"?!?But, my favorite aspect of freecycling is that it is great for our environment. By giving items away verses throwing them out, we are decreasing the amount of junk thrown into landfills. Honestly, what logic is there in throwing away a perfectly working tv just because it is an older model? On the other hand by using freecycle to acquire goods we are not constantly going out to purchase newly manufactured goods. Manufacturing utilizes our energy sources. And since all factories around the world are not quiet yet utilizing a clean energy source, I say why bother.

The Freecycle Networks not only gets two big thumbs up but a round of applause as well. Take a hint from me before you toss it list it. Also before you buy it list it. You will be pleasantly surprised what freecyling has to offer.
