House Insurance: Is The Best Policy The Cheapest? Grab Some Home Insurance Tips!

Updated on August 31, 2011

If you are looking for house insurance, it is true that the best policy may not be the cheapest.

Increased excess and cut backs on levels of cover will effect a claim.

But what if you can drive down costs in other ways?

Well worry not, here we have home insurance tips that will let you have your cake and eat it too!

If you are someone who doesn't claim often on your home insurance and you are not afraid to spend a little time doing your research, you have placed yourself in a prime position.

Insurance companies want your money and will bend over backwards to draw it from you.

Use this power to make a saving and bag yourself an insurance bargain that will make you the envy of your neighbours!

Home Insurance: Take Advantage Of This Highly Competitive Environment

The cost of living is increasing but wages are stagnant. Something has to give. As the world economies cut back on their expenditures, so you must follow suit. It is, indeed, the way of the world.

One of the great ways to cost cut is on your home insurance. It makes sense to take advantage of this highly competitive environment. They want you to spend money with them - especially if you aren't a claimer - low riskers are who they make their money from!

There are competitive and attractive deals out there, but is the cheaper policy the best?

A Struggling Insurance Industry

People should be warned that they could be at financial risk if they cut back on their household insurance. This is particularly the case in the event of fire, theft, flood and accident.

It isn't surprising that this warning comes from the British Insurance Brokers' Association. They claim that a 57% reduction in consumers level of insurance protection has been reported (Source: Daily Express) as an attempt to cut costs during the poor economic climate.

This really is good news for us consumers! It means the insurance industry are struggling and that means we can bag a bargain by beating them down to the bone. If you are a low risker, don't generally claim, you can use this as a tool to get the best cover for the cheapest price.

Ask To Be Referred To The Underwriter

You represent 100% pure profit because you don't claim, so some money is better than no money at all!

No price is fixed... everything is always open to negotiation and, once you have found the lowest quote, you can always ask to be referred to the underwriter for a better deal, should you receive that 'sharp intake of breath' from the operator! They don't want to lose your business and you want to save money, so why not give it a go?

Insurance Bartering

The insurance industry is sending out scaremongering press releases. One quote from Eric Galbraith, Chief executive of The British Insurance Brokers Association, states:

"The steep rise in people cutting cover is very worrying..." For who, the Insurance industry?

..."We understand that times are tough but consumers should take care not to leave themselves exposed. It could be false economy and cost them thousands of pounds for repairs or to replace belongings."

Yes, this is true if you don't barter properly in the first place. Again, if you are the type of person who doesn't claim, you have a great negotiating tool so as you can have your cake and eat it.

Other Ways To Cut The Cost Of House Insurance - Burglar Alarm

Apart from negotiating tactics, there are other ways that you can cut the cost of home insurance.

Why not save money by installing a burglar alarm. Here recommended is one of the best in quick installations, cheap, cheerful and a good way to slash home insurance premiums. This wireless, motion detecting alarm calls you, so as you can call the police.

This is what one of the reviewers of this 5 star product said about it:

"The alarm is easy to install, easy to program and it has a number of great features.
If by any chance, someone managed to get in your house with out setting off a door or window sensor, they still won't get passed the motion detectors. The alarm will sound off (which is very loud) and the system will continuously dial up to 6 phone numbers (people that you know) to call the police.
If your phone line is cut the alarm will sound off. If someone tries to tamper with the system the alarm will sound off. If you are at home, it can be set to turn off the motion detectors and still arm the door/ window sensors so you can move about your house freely. There are a few other features for personal preference. All in all I think it is a very good system and would recommend it to anyone. AAS also offer a number of different size packages to meet your needs."

Reduce House Insurance With Upfront Payments

Most insurers charge in addition for credit card payments and monthly installments. Why not use this as a negotiating point to reduce the costs? Perhaps if you pay via a debit card in full may help to cut down the costs.

Reduce Household Insurance by Buying Online

By purchasing your home insurance online, you can help reduce costs to the insurance company and, therefore, reduce the costs to you too. Some companies, like Swift cover for example, allow you to print off your insurance and have an online text chat style of communication should you have a query. Without having to pay for staff to deal with your enquiry, the Internet really has helped to provide incentives on a 'do it yourself' style for cheaper cover.

By using websites like moneysupermarket.com and comparethemarket.com, you can scan the whole market, thereby taking all the hard work out of trolling the insurance market.
