How I Learned How To Make Money On The Internet

Updated on February 12, 2013

I first began writing articles on the web as a content producer at Associated Content in 2008.

Eventually, I discovered another online writing opportunity at eHow, and it was then that I began to learn how to make money on the Internet.

Today, both of the online article opportunities that I mentioned above have experienced massive changes.

Associated Content has been bought out by Yahoo, and re-branded as the Yahoo Contributor's Network (YCN). Their writing opportunity still exists.

eHow has ended their writers compensation program, so that opportunity no longer exists. However, those of us who were successful at eHow can certainly attest to the large amounts of money we earned therein. It was truly a life changing experience.

Today I am 100% confident that earning money on the Internet is an excellent way to build wealth for the future.

I can say that because I have experienced the awesome power of passive income firsthand, and I am hooked.

In order to make money on the Internet, either here on Hubpages or with your own website, blog, or anywhere else on the web, there are many concepts you need to understand.

On this hub, I will share with you all of the free ebooks, videos and tutorial that are offered from people who are leaders when it comes to making money online.

A Word About Internet Gurus

Some of the web's biggest entrepreneurs have grown to become Internet Gurus, and I have learned a lot about how to make money on the Internet from them.

These people offer free advice because they realize that IF and when you do decide to spend money on something that may be necessary in the future, you will return to them and purchase the item, product or service through their affiliate link.

*If you do not know what an affiliate is, please watch the video to the above ↑

These people have made very lucrative professions out of affiliate marketing and reselling products and services.

However, you never have to purchase anything in order to learn, you can simply benefit from the massive amounts of valuable, free advice they dispense.

You will not learn everything in one day, simply bookmark their sites and come back to enrich your mind at your leisure. However, I do suggest that you thoroughly read all of the ebooks on the list in one sitting.

The secret to their success is they actually want you to succeed because they know that you will spread the word about them if their advice helps you to earn more. . . just as I am doing right now.

Internet Gurus to Avoid

Just as in the real world, the web is full of unscrupulous people who could really care less about whether or not you succeed. These people are solely in business to get your money.

If you come across someone who is hocking a "How to Make Money on the Internet" course or class or ebook, and they want to charge you for the advice - - without offering any real proof of their own success, you need to beware.

Now having said that, I know that many of the trusted Internet gurus offer paid products as well, but the difference is you do not have to purchase their products to still gain tons of valuable information.

Although the following video details an incident where a lady got scammed on Youtube, the same principles apply to the Internet overall.

Search Engine Optimization (SEO)

Search Engine Optimization (SEO) is the main concept you will have to learn if you are serious about learning how to make money on the Internet.

Google is the undisputed #1 search engine on the planet, and they offer an SEO guide for people who are just starting out.

Although much of the guide is geared toward people who have their own website or blog, most of the methods are relevant for writing good web content across the board.

The Google Search Engine Optimization Guide tells you exactly what they want you to do in order to rank well on their search engine - and this is how you will make money on the Internet.

However, the Google SEO Guide is written in a manner that assumes you already have some knowledge of the subject. So, you might still have lots of questions . . .

To get those questions answered, you should check out some of the shorter, more straight-forward hubs about SEO. You can find some of the really good ones in the Important Hub Links below.

This way, you will get the big picture layout from Google first, and then you will have access to clearly explained SEO guides from successful Hubbers.

Making Money on Hubpages

The best way I learned how to make money on the Internet, specifically at Hubpages is by reading instruction hubs from successful hubbers.

There is also the Hubpages Learning Center, Hubpages Help, and you can also post a question in one of the super friendly Hubpages Forums once you have joined.

If you have not already done so, Join Hubpages Now, to get started making money as soon as possible.

Once you have joined, come back and pay close attention to the following informative hubs so that you will not waste a lot of time writing on Hubpages for zero profit.

In Conclusion

Whew! That was a lot of information. It was all of the resources I could remember for how I learned to make money on the Internet.

My Ultimate Passive Income Plan

I have since learned that Affiliate Marketing is the absolute way to go for me. After carefully evaluating tons of opportunities, I now know that the SBI 5 Pillar Program is the absolute IT for me.

The SBI product and affiliate marketing program simply works for anyone who is interested in earning money online the good old-fashioned way (through hard work - there are no gimmicks, schemes, systems or tricks involved).

The aspect that impressed me most was the fact that even if you do not join the SBI 5 Pillar Program, or purchase the Site Build It product, you can still learn how to really make money on the Internet by reading the 100% free ebooks "Netwriting Masters Course," "Make Your Content PreSell," and "Make Your Words Sell".

Your Ultimate Passive Income Plan

But, enough about my future plans, it is time you started thinking about your own pan to build wealth on the world wide web.

Please, allow me stress one more thing, one more time, before I let you go . . .

Please do not go out and purchase anything from any of the affiliate marketers I have recommended on this page. Your job now is to simply learn from them . . .

Remember, as far as making money online goes, you do not necessarily need to spend money to make money.

I know your head must be spinning by now. But, once you have learned all of the important concepts herein, you will be well on your way to making a very comfortable passive income.

Good Luck to You!

@ Thomas SEO & Naseer1932 - SBI is not a system per se, it is a complete tool that can be used to build a legitimate money making niche site. But there is plenty of hard work involved.

Thanks so much for stopping by my hub and contributing to this conversation.

@ Rachelle Williams Hear hear, the affiliate link days were so simple and so easy.

The best part was the average surfer had no idea it was all about marketing and they just clicked on everything LOL

This SBI system is making me curious, I'm looking into it..

@ andrew2u - I know what you mean about Google Panda, it was a monster. However, I am focusing my efforts offline and I am finding success. But, I do miss the good old days when a person could just throw up an affiliate link and wait for the clicks...

      andrew2u 6 years ago

Search engine optimization is exactly how I make money on the internet. It takes a lot of work at the start, but if you know what youre doing then the payoffs are big in the end. However, affiliate marketing isnt as popular as it used to be since Google Panda.

You are welcome, anytime. I think that would be a good idea. We can keep each other motivated.

I'm starting my newest SBI site after Christmas as well, I have too much going on during the holidays and I know I'll be distracted.

I have been following Lisa Irby for about five years now, and I have just started putting her ideas into practice - I always knew that she was preaching the gospel, but I just kept putting it off for myself.

I'll see you around the hubs....

    • NiaG profile image

NiaG 6 years ago from Louisville, KY

We need to stay real close because I want to have a buddy system for this. lol I've read up on Lisa's sites and have really taken an interest but just don't know anybody that does this or who to turn to for bouncing off ideas. Maybe next month after Christmas I'll give SBI a shot. Thanks again Rachelle.

@ NiaG - I sold the site because I wanted the money. I didn't think about the fact that if a company was willing to pay me that much money, my earning power must have been ten times that amount over time. I just saw dollar signs - now I regret it, but it's too late.

SBI is indeed $299, and they still do the installment plans at $29.99 a month. I started out with the installment plan, and I was exceeding my monthly output in 4 months.

I'm told 4 months is rather slow, but I took my sweet time and soaked up all of the video training and zillions of other tools offered to members.

It paid off in the end, but my next SBI site is going to help set my financial future, so I'm going in hard.

    • NiaG profile image

NiaG 6 years ago from Louisville, KY

I have a question as to why you sold it. Was that the goal? Or did you make it for yourself and didn't want it anymore? I made my wordpress from scratch but I don't know if we're using that term in the same way. When I last read up on SBI it was about $300 but they were starting to do installment plans. I wonder if they're still doing that. I can't afford 300 outright right now.

    • Rachelle Williams profile image

@ adrienne2 - yes ma'am, I did. I now know that I could have made a lot more money if I had kept the site, but you live and you learn, huh. I'm going to create another profitable niche site using SBI, and this time...I'm going to keep it for myself.

@ NiaG - give it a try and let me know how it goes. Good Luck to you.

    • NiaG profile image

Hmmm....makes me more curious to try it. Thanks for the info. :-)

Hey Rachelle, No you didnt sell an SBI site for $24,000 this year. I had built a site through the SBI program. Talk about hard work...whew!! SBI is tops when it comes to building your own site from scratch. Tops off to you on your sale!

    • Rachelle Williams profile image

Rachelle Williams 6 years ago from Tempe, AZ

@ Somethingblue - peruse your heart out! I hope make lots of money. If you stumble across anything that I don't already know about, please do share....

@ NiaG - the thing about SBI is the fact that they walk you through the process of finding a profitable niche, setting up your website, making sure that each of your web pages is properly search engine optimized, helping you to write exceptional content, and tons of other tools to help you actually turn your site into a profitable business instead of an online brochure.

I sold an SBI site for $24,000 earlier this year, and I'm working on another one right now. This is why it has taken me 7 months to write 100 hubs here on Hubpages...but, SBI is a definite money maker - no gimmick, no games, just a lot of hard work that pays off in the end.

I have a Wordpress site and I always read about SBI. I always wonder if I should try SBI but don't want to let what I have going go. I didn't find out about SBI until after I started my Wordpress site. I've read lots of books about making money on the internet. I'm hoping my research helps put me on the same playing field as if I did have SBI. Do you know what SBI has more than most other hosts? Is it that they just give you more tips when you sign up with them to help you?

It is good to read that your feathers are unruffled as I surely wouldn't want any of my adoring fans to be agitated by any of my humble yet all knowing opinions.

I will peruse your material as I am beginning to make some cake on these pages by spreading my insipid dogma among the sheeple and am looking to increase my readership and maybe make some money in the process.

      Thanks for sharing . . .

@ Somethingblue - My feathers are officially unruffled

@ Rain Defense - You are absolutely right, thanks for pointing it out.

@ Tyra Marieza - eHow has closed their writer's compensation program. You will need to apply to Demand Media/Demand Studios if you want to write for them.

@ Thomas SEO - Indeed...something that sounds too good to be true, usually is...Nothing but hard work (or dumb luck)will ever truly pan out in this life we lead.

      Great detailed hub Rachelle.

The main part of my business is to improve SEO for my clients' websites, but on the other side which isn't public, I create websites and run Adsense and once the website improves traction, advertisers offer to place ads on them.

From this I make an average of $800 per month per site (the ones that are successful, some just don't get traction)

It sounds like you know what you're doing, keep up the great work.

A note to everyone - If you're looking to make money on the Internet and the deal is TOO GOOD TO BE TRUE, take that advice.

If money was that easy to make, they wouldn't be giving you that opportunity.

Hi, I didn't mean that. I meant that in your Internet Gurus to Avoid section, you've made the mistake of writing that these people could care less about whether you succeed or not. If someone could care less, then it means they care. I think what you probably meant to say is they couldn't care less.

It jumped out at me when I read it that's all, so I thought I'd let you know.

I wasn't saying that you were, it's just that I needed a dollar amount to make an informed decision on whether to peruse the material. However thank you for giving me your permission to do what I want to do . . . I know I will sleep easier tonight!

That was humor so don't get feathers in a ruffle.

@ laurie21789 - at eHow, I averaged about $850 per month. At AC/YCN I averaged about $30 per month & $5.25 per article (this was when I realized that I was being bamboozled).

@ somethingblue - If you do not want to pay any attention to the links, then don't. You don't have to do anything you don't want to do....

@ Rain Defence - ummmm....I thought I made it clear that the people I referred you to in the links are not the scammers. I would never refer anyone to a scammer.

Hello Rachelle. I want to point somthing out that you say. You say:

'Just as in the real world, the web is full of unscrupulous people who could really care less about whether or not you succeed. These people are solely in business to get your money.'

So what you're saying is, these scammers care whether or not you succeed? I don't think scammers actually care.

I would say scammers couldn't care less whether or not you succeed. If they could care less, that means they do care.

Before I invest any more time and effort I need a dollar amount on what you averaged a month and after what amount of time this average began to produce the numbers.

Otherwise as you say I will bookmark this hub and occasionally scan your many links.
