How To Make Money in One Day - a few ideas if you are desperate

Updated on August 11, 2013

Make Money in One Day

In these times of hardship, with jobs being lost and everything going up in price, there is always a few days in the month when you get to the stage of being completely broke. You start to panic and think, what on earth am I going to do? I know, I have had many days like this. Especially if, like me, you have been in a really good job, with a monthly paycheck, then all of a sudden you are made redundant. There is always welfare where you can claim a few dollars, but that never ever seems to last longer than a few days. What with electricity bills and telephone, food and gas prices, we can get caught up in the struggle and feel nothing but despair. You can even get to the stage where you think that maybe it is a good idea not to get out of bed in the morning because you haven't got enough money to buy food for the day. Hopefully these ideas that I have tried and tested will give you some idea on How To make Money in One Day.

I am not saying it is easy. In fact you will have to live on your wits. But there is always somewhere in your town that you should be able to do the things that will bring in enough money to feed you or get gas for your car. Whatever it is that you desperately need. I had to do this recently and luckily it worked!

Source

Go through your cupboards and drawers

First of all, think about what you can sell quickly. Nearly everybody will have something that they can make a few dollars with. Over the years you will have accumulated rings and bracelets, little bits of jewelry that are either gold, silver or a mixture of the two. It doesn't matter if the object in question has only a small piece of gold or silver. Break it apart and collect up the metal. Most towns or Cities have a Jewelry shop that will buy your gold and silver. I did this last week, with a ring that never fitted me in the first place! In fact I forgot that I had it. It was gold. At this point you have to decide whether the ring that cost a couple of hundred dollars is worth giving up for scrap. If you are desperate then fine, you should earn at least thirty dollars for it. It all depends on the weight. Silver is quite good, but you will need quite a bit more of it to make any money. Even ten dollars is enough if you are hungry or desperate for something that you need.

Scrap Metal. Copper Aluminium etc.

As I explained in my hub about scrap metal, there is always a way to earn quick money by scrapping copper or aluminium. Just strip the metal, and take it to the nearest scrap dealer. A good idea is to always collect old pieces of wire, so if you need money you can burn away the plastic coating and get the copper out. And never throw away any metal pieces, keep old tools and broken washing machine parts in your garage. You never know when they will come in handy.

Garden Sale

If you are aware of the fact that you are going to be a bit short of money, plan a garden sale. All you need to do is set out a table by your front gate, and pile it with old books, clothes and ornaments. you can sell this way as long as it is on your own property. Be aware though that if you set up your table outside of your garden you will probably need a licence to sell. So make sure you are within your own boundaries. I live in a rich town, unfortunately! Everything is so expensive. But even here, the residents do this occasionally. It seems to be a popular pastime! I have often walked past a house with a table set out with personal goods and a sign saying, 'Please leave money in the tin'! I am not sure I would leave it to chance though! Get yourself a chair and a book and just wait for customers, everybody loves a bargain.

Barter

This idea takes a bit of extra confidence on your part. Obviously this will be a bit more difficult if you don't get on with your neighbors, or you live quite a way from the nearest house. But most of us do have neighbors that we talk to, or visit occasionally. look for something appropriate. For example, if you know your neighbor has just bought a shed, or started work on their garden. Search for any garden tools that you don't want or need, and go and knock on their door. Explain your problem, you need sugar or bread, money for the car etc, and would they be prepared to swap for the garden tools? Now, I know this sounds strange and completely out of character, but believe me, it does work! I live on an estate and we all seem to do this. If I run out of sugar, I asked the neighbour next door, and at the same time offer something in return. It doesn't have to be an object that you give. You could offer to take the dog out, or help with their decorating. Get the idea?

Tarot or Card Readings

This may sound a bit 'out there' but hear me out. I have been doing Tarot, Angel, and Psy Card readings since I was a teenager. I combine the readings with psychology, and before a reading I tell the client that I have no idea where the information comes from, I don't claim to be in touch with great Aunt Sally, who passed over in the 14th century at the time of the plague! Hum! I tell them that we all have a certain type of psychic ability, some call it intuition, and this is what I use. I trained to be a psychologist, in fact I only had one more course to do and I would have been a counselor, so as you can see I am qualified. I find that it helps the person to whom I am doing the reading, because by reading the cards they tend to open up and confront any demons or phobias that they have. My point is, if you learn to do the Cards, then you can make money, even if it is not regularly. Someone always wants their cards read!

Conclusion

There are various ways of earning a quick buck if you put your mind to it. But it does take determination and confidence. The one bit of advice I will leave you with is this. Whatever you do to try to make some money quickly, always remember not to look desperate! Make up a good excuse. For example, you need the money for your holiday pot. Or you are travelling the next day, and need some extra cash, but it's not that important. If people think you are desperate they will try and con you. I know it's not nice, but it is a fact, I am afraid. I know the saying How To Make Money in One Day sounds like a pie in the sky dream, but believe me, it is possible. I always say, before I go out on one of these ventures, 'Hold onto your dignity, and your purse will look after itself!' Good Luck.

I worked at an automotive shop once and we had a guy that came around the shops for scrap metal. Most of the shops in town were happy to get rid of the extra clutter and not have to pay a disposal fee. I had forgotten all about that til now. Great ideas. :)

      NellRose,

I would suggest if you could shake out the money, to finish the last class you need for your degree, and then hang out a shingle to be a counselor. That would possibly make you the most money, although I don't know what the licensure laws are in England.

In the US, a tried and true method is to pick up recyclables preferably aluminum cans, which pay better on the west coast than it does inland.

Heck back in the late 80's- early 90's I used to collect 2 large garage sacks full of crushed cans, and I got about $25/ per bag out of them.

Also plastic bottles in some states have a 5 cent return, so if you picked up 20 bottles, that would be a dollar and so on.

      Good luck,

      EA

I totally understand the need to make a few extra bucks. Some other ways I use to make a few bucks around the holidays are with my crafting, candy making and cakes. I also lease my cleaning skills out to elderly who no longer can do their spring cleaning. The fastest way to make money is with address curb painting. All you need is number stencils, one can of black spray paint and one can of white spray paint. You spray a black box on the front curb and spray the address with the white. I charge $5 a house and the two cans can do over ten houses. By having this done, it makes it easier for emergency vehicles and delivery people to find your house at night.

Good ideas Nell - I guess people who fall on hard times really need some positive thinking perhaps more than anything else, and actions such as these not only bring in a few pounds but also help to keep the mind active and positive about the future. Any little sale will raise the spirits. Selling stuff in garden / garage sales is also a good idea for hoarders who are running out of hoarding space - if only they can find the resolve to get rid of stuff they've been hanging on to for years. Alun.

Very good article here Nell. In a pinch we all can use some creative ideas to make a few extra dollars. Garage sales are big in the USA and are similar to the "Garden Sale" mentioned here in your hub. People will often start a sale on a Wednesday and finish up on Sunday depending on the number of customers coming around. I've combined arts and crafts that I've made with clothing and home decor at some of my garage sales and have done quite nicely. Voted Up and Useful!

There is always the old fashioned way of earning a quick quid. Get down the docks with a short skirt and some lipstick on and try and attract the attention of the dockers for a quid a go. It isn't the most enjoyable way of spending your night, especially if you're a bloke doing it, but you can earn a quid or two. I've been telling my mate to do this for years, although I've never been sure whether he should shave his beard off first or not.. ;)

Great ideas, it is helpful in our bad time. Usually people have gold and silver. In India, our main motive to purchase jewelery, is not only to wear it but also its usefulness in worse time.

I wish, I will not be in this situation ever, but no one knows about the future.

      Voted up and useful.

Most everyone has something that another values. Finding ways to help others while helping yourself is a great idea. My mother found two niches which kept her during hard times.

She raised 11 children for the most part alone. She received child support for only one child which was her last. From the time I was 6 I never remember being hungry when I was with her. There were times we ate things others wouldn't consider food.

My mother had learned Spanish when she was a teen. She later learned to translate 37 dialects to English and English to those dialects. For her children Spanish was our second language. It came in handy because we lived in a community where Spanish was the most spoken language.

She also took in sewing especially after her children were grown. After she retired she was allowed to make $200 a month. She never failed to make it until brain cancer took away her ability to sew.

She was not able to pick a day to earn, she had to wait until someone came to her. Word of mouth did more for her than any advertising she did.

People and companies came to her for translation work. Once I learned about Fiver.com it reminded me of what she did. She never seemed to charge over five dollars. The more she did for five dollars the more work came her way.

I have business friends who started out on Fiver.com It is a way to prove your work to others. Only one friend still does this and seldom now.

I am not sure if many of us can get by with tarot reading! Of course, this is just an example. I like the suggestion by one of your reader to do babysitting. That's easy that many can try.

Great ideas. Luckily I am not in this type of situation but it is definitely great advice that anyone could use at some point. Voted up and shared.

Nell, I just love the ideas here! I read tarot, too. Never do I claim to have insights beyond what anyone else would have because I don't but it seems to fit the person rather remarkably. I also do an old Celtic reading. One time, when we were really in dire straits, we put an ad on an Internet site to do housecleaning and had the phone ringing within minutes! I figured I clean my own house so why not? I hope never to be there again but in a pinch, it works. One day, we need to have a chat over a cup of tea or a brew LOL

This Hub came in handy for me now that I have slashed my budget by cutting off my cable and not subscribing to the newspaper any longer. I'm always trying find extra money. I do rent out my yard and household items (wrote a Hub about that), and I do get money from that.

Great Hub, witty as can be. I voted it up, etc. and will share in all the right places.

      Nell,

Great article. I know a building right next door where there's a lot of copper wire. As soon as my neighbors leave, I'll get right to it. We're not on speaking terms anyway. They got mad last week when I sold their garden to a passer by! Loved your hub. Some really great ideas presented!

I am all about earning some fast cash. Thanks for sharing these ideas. I've thought about tarot card reading, I have just never done it for a profit. I have two sets of cards. One seems to work for me... the other, not so much. Voted up!

Hi Jackie, lol! contrary to popular belief its the north of England that gets all the rain, down south we usually have great summers, apart from this year, no idea what happened! lol! yes Kate was a bit silly doing that I think, but she will know in future, thanks as always, nell

There are some real treasures at yard sales you can buy when you are standing good and sell when you aren't. I bet you guys have a real time planning a yard sale with all the rain or is that misinformation?

Been following Kate. Bad stuff, and shows how very unsafe she is but I imagine from now on she will be protected.

Dear sweet Nell, thank you so much for writing this hub. The thought of a garage/garden sale excites me to bits as my home is full of junk and rubbish held onto over the years. I have learned to "pull the belt in" while cooking and making lovely comforting foods from cupboard ingredients that don't stand out alone.

You fascinate me with your Tarot cards reading, I haven't had my cards read for over thirty years now, but I am a great believer in all things spiritual, so I must keep a look out for a reader in my area.

A very insightful hub dear friend, here's to reading many more. Nette
