How To Save Money At Chipotle

Updated on March 16, 2015

I love, love, love Chipotle! It is my absolute favorite quick service restaurant. The food is fresh, delicious, and healthy. If you haven't had the pleasure of eating at Chipotle you should stop what you are doing and go eat there now! They serve tacos, burritos, salads, and burrito bowls with fresh ingredients. Their website says, "Food with Integrity is our commitment to finding the very best ingredients raised with respect for the animals, the environment and the farmers." To learn more about Chipotle there is a documentary called Inside Chipotle. It is available below. If you don't love Chipotle already, I bet you will after watching this documentary about them.

Inside Chipotle

I am not here just to rave about Chipotle. I go to Chipotle about 3 times a week so I have learned some tricks to maximize my savings. I usually get a burrito bowl with brown rice, black beans, fajita vegetables, chicken, corn salsa, guacamole on the side, and a tortilla on the side. This meal is a little over $9.

8 Ways To Save

Options for saving and maximizing your meal are:

1. Ask for extra of everything that is free.

If it is free and I like it, I ask for extra. I ask for extra brown rice, fajita veggies, black beans, and corn salsa. I do not ask for extra guacamole or meat as these items cost extra.

2. Make your burrito bowl two meals

When I get extra of everything free, I end up having a very full bowl. Half of the bowl is plenty. So, before I started eating I split the bowl in two and save half for later. Its hard to believe but I think the bowl tastes even better when reheated. I just take off the lid and pop the bottom cardboard bowl in the microwave for about a minute and I am ready to eat the second half. Sometimes i even eat it for breakfast.

3. Order a tortilla on the side

When I get a burrito bowl I can order a tortilla on the side and it is free. This helps my meal go even further. You can make your burrito using some of the contents of the burrito bowl and save the rest for your next meal.

4. Skip the Soda

Instead of buying soda, ask for a cup of water. A cup of water is free. Soda has no redeeming qualities. It is bad for you, it is extra useless calories, and it is expensive. So, skip the soda and ask for a cup of water to save money.

5. Skip the guacamole

Okay, this is the hardest one for me because Chipotle makes the best guacamole on the planet. But, it costs extra to get guacamole, so if you are looking to save money load up on free ingredients and skip the guacamole.

6. Go right before they close

If you go half an hour before they close they are more likely to load up your meals or give you extras because they need to get rid of the ingredients.

7. Ask for ingredients that they are out of

If you see that one of the bowls at the counter is empty or nearly empty, ask for that ingredient. If it is going to be a couple minutes before the ingredient is ready the staff may offer you a free drink while you wait. This has happened to me a couple times.

8. And, if you are really lucky...

Try to go the day before they open a new location. I happened on this by accident. I went to a new location thinking it was opening day. There was a long line and when I walked in I found out it was a test run. Everyone there was able to order a meal for free so the staff could practice. No guarantees that this will work, but it can't hurt to try!

Kimberly: I love Chipotle as well. In fact I love it so much, I own their stock. Thanks for the tips. I would have never thought of the tortilla routine.
