How to Earn Income without Working

Updated on April 27, 2015

Are you too young to be not working?

We work, we get paid. How many times have you heard this? I know I must have heard this a thousand times from my parents. And perfect strangers who judge me wrongly. I remembered taking some time off and playing some golf. All my friends were working so I had no one to go play with. I decided to walk on a local course and play by myself. Golf courses love to team you up with strangers to fill up their tee times. They don't want you to wander off by yourself as though they don't trust you. That day, I was teamed up with three older gentlemen that asked me how young I was. After telling them my age, they were shocked to find me on the golf course. They said I should be working and that I was too young to be not working.

We don't work, we don't get paid

I have been a consultant for most of my working life so I know the words too well. As a consultant, I get paid an hourly wage so when I work, I get paid. When I don't work, I don't get paid. That is the life of a consultant and I have worked as a consultant for well over 25 years.

After graduating from university, I found a job out east and moved there. I worked as a consultant and loved the financial freedom. One day I attended a money seminar and it changed my life forever. Since then I have been searching for a way to earn income without working.

Buy-In or Opt-out

The money seminar was held in a hotel conference room and it was free to attend. People were lining up to get a name badge and a coffee. I skipped the beverage line and went directly into the room where the speakers were arranging the hand outs. It was a full house and the hotel staff was frantically bringing in chairs for attendees to sit. The chatter got so loud that it was hard to think. People were getting excited just to get in on the seminar. It was as though their life was going to change at the conclusion of the meeting.

The speakers in front of the podium introduced themselves and they dived right into their pitch. They flashed a few intro slides then put up a chart with lots of dollar signs on it. After an hour, there were a show of hands from people who wanted to register for the program. I wasn't quite convinced because I was too naïve and I have been conditioned for much too long about the relationship between work and pay. I was not buying in and opting out.

Have you attended a Money Seminar? If so, how did you react?

Turning Point

It took about 25 years of traditional conditioning before I realized that it was possible to earn an income without working. This is probably the reason why I started golf so late in my life? Instead of Tiger Woods who began golfing at three years old, I didn't pick it up until I was in my forties.

The turning point was when a coworker of mine had introduced me to a stock that paid a monthly dividend. He said every month, he would receive a check from his broker. Depending on how much you were willing to invest, the check amount could either be a few cents or a few hundred dollars. I asked him if there was a limit and he said no. It was really up to me to determine the amount of risk and reward.

Power of Google

I grabbed my iPhone and google'd everything about stocks that pay monthly, highest dividend payers, stocks that pay highest dividends, best dividend stocks, highest stock dividends, monthly payers and whatever combination or permutation of the words 'stock', 'dividend', 'month' and adjectives like 'best', 'highest' and 'greatest'.

I researched, I read and I finally settled on a handful of stocks that would pay me a hefty sum per month. I wanted to start small and eventually work my way up. I was prepared to continue working but I wanted this scheme to supplement my income. Once I had some confidence, I would increase my investment and earn a higher income from stocks.

We Don't Work but We Get Paid...Finally!

It has been four months and I have been earning an income without working. Who would ever think that it was possible to earn an income every month without working?

I hope you learn from this that it is possible to earn an income without working. It all depends on picking the right stock, having the money to buy it and trusting the company to pay you the dividends that it owes you. That is the reason why you have to check into the 'Dividend History' of the stock to make sure it has never skipped a payment and there are sufficient funds to cover future payments.
