How to Get Some Extra Money in Your Pocket Today

Updated on January 5, 2016
Garage Sales are a great way to rustle up some extra money for things you want and clear out the clutter.
Garage Sales are a great way to rustle up some extra money for things you want and clear out the clutter.

Have a Garage Sale

Have a garage sale. The amount of crap most people collect in the course of a year is astonishing. Go through your closets in the shelves and little cubbyholes in your house where things get tucked away and look for the stuff that you don't use anymore. A lot of times at Christmas, I can tell what is going to be garage sale fodder in the summer just by how much the kids play with it. There is no need to keep that stuff lying around your house. Put a price on it and get it out in the front yard. An old cardboard box can make a great sign. No need to get fancy schmancy. Just get it sold and get the cash in hand.

I know people who acctually buy extra crap through the year to sell at their garage sales. They will go to local auctions and bid on the "Smalls". Smalls are the boxes of nick-knacks that it would be too time consuming to sell individually so they get thrown into one box and sold together usually for a buck or two. They pick these things up on the cheap and then sell the individual items for a couple of dollars a piece.

Craigslist

Craigslist is a great online resource to tap into if you need to earn some extra money today. Find some stuff you are willing to part with and make a listing. The categories on Craigslist are set up so that the people with money in hand who need or want the stuff you are selling can find it in short order. If you price the item right, you can have your money in as little as an hour. Don't forget the services section of the site either. If you are willing to mo lawns or shovel snow or rake leaves, put an ad out there and get to work.

What if you don't have anything to sell on Craigslist? Head over to the free section. A lot of times people will put perfectly good free stuff up on the free category of Craigslist because they are moving and can't take it with them or they don't want the hassle of selling it. Keep a close eye there and you can find great stuff to pick up and sell yourself. Also, keep an eye out for items like brass beds and other metal. You can get money for scrap.

Go For a Walk

If you are lucky enough to live in one of the ten states that offer redemption for your bottles and cans, the gutters of America are lined in cash, literally, if you are willing to do the work. The states that have cash deposits for bottles and cans are:

State
Redemption Value
California
5 cents up to 24 oz. 10 cents over 24 oz
Conneticut
5 cents
Hawaii
5 cents
Iowa
5 cents
Maine
5 cents
Michigan
10 cents
Massachusetts
5 cents
New York
5 cents
Oregon
5 cents
Vermont
5 cents

A lot of residents of these states find that it is too time consuming to go to the nickleback or to the local can return to get their 5 cents back for that bottle of soda they just bought at the convenience store and chuck them right out the window of their cars. That's where you come in. Grab a trash bag and head out for a walk. Pick up those carelessly discarded items and run them into the store to get the money.

Look for the neighbors that just put their cans and bottles out at the curb for recycling. Those people most likely just want the cans gone. The trash companies do not count the cans and give a credit to their customers. Knock on the door and ask if the homeowner would mind if you took the cans and bottles. Most will not mind. Like I said, They just want them gone.

Check with local businesses. Many times they will have the bottles and cans separated, but with all of the responsibility of owning a small business the cans take up space in the building and become just one more chore that needs to be done. A lot of businesses will allow you to take the cans for the deposit just so they are out of their way

It may not be a glamorous way to make money in one day, but the nickles add up to dollars. It is pretty easy to come up with an extra ten bucks in short order.

States that offer Can and Bottle Redemption

Summary

There is no reason the average person cannot come up with an extra $500 to $1000 dollars in a single day if they put their mind to it. When you look at stuff in the house, ask what you think you can get for it and put the money in your pocket.

Let me know!

Which of these things have you done to earn some extra money?
