How to Save Money at McDonald's

Updated on May 9, 2016

If you’re like my family, when it comes to eating fast food, McDonald’s is probably your go-to spot. Whether you’re looking to relax with a cup of coffee or take the kids out for a meal, McDonald’s is a favorite with almost everyone. Despite the fact that McDonald’s is a ton cheaper than a lot of places, I recently discovered that there are plenty of ways to make this fast food restaurant even easier on the budget. Listed below are my six favorite McDonald’s money-saving tricks!

#1 Download the App. If you struggle to decide how many apps you want cluttering your device, believe me when I say that the McDonald’s app is definitely worth the space it takes! When you download the app and set your location, you are instantly offered a great selection of offers. New offers become available each week, and you can use each offer one time per device. These are high-value offers such as a percentage off your meal and buy one get one free sandwiches. While you can only use one offer per person per order, different family members can use multiple devices and multiple orders to save the most money.

#2 Value Menu. McDonald’s actually has some really good offers on the value menu. In fact, I generally get low-cost items such as a McChicken sandwich or a burger. Even if you would rather buy a more expensive sandwich, you can still cut down on your cost by purchasing a value drink and fries.

#3 Fill Out Surveys on the Receipt. In my area, McDonald’s prints out a survey invitation on the top of each receipt printed. Some of the incentives for filling out the receipt are things like free fries with your sandwich purchase, while others are more valuable such as “buy one sandwich, get one free”. Filling out the survey takes just a few minutes and, since McDonald's offers free Wifi, you can even fill it out while you’re still in the restaurant. The surveys I’ve received state that they need to be filled out within seven days and the offer code is only valid for thirty days.

#4 Take Advantage of Monopoly. Okay, so I’ve pretty much accepted that I will never win a million dollars playing McDonald’s Monopoly game (I was never good at the board game either!), but the game still offers a lot of chances to win some great free food. Buying high priced food just to play Monopoly isn’t the best idea; however, you need to be on the look out for food that has the pieces and is still within your price range. For instance, if you’re trying to choose between a Buttermilk Chicken or a Big Mac, go for the one that has a game piece! Always make sure to keep up with your pieces and use them before they expire.

#5 Reduced Gift Cards at Raise. There is a great website called that offers reduced gift cards; amazingly enough, McDonalds gift cards are available at 15% off their price. In other words, if you buy a $50 gift card, you only have to pay $42.50. That’s $7.50 worth of free food! .

#6 Check-in on MPlusPlaces. MPlusPlaces isn’t directly connected with McDonald's, but you can still use it to earn points for “checking in” at this and other fast food restaurants. You won’t get rich with MPlusPlaces, but it’s still a great way to earn a little bit toward gift cards when you use the app to “check in” at McDonald's.

By using the options listed above, you can easily save each time you visit McDonald's. Do you have any more ideas about ways to save money at this favorite fast food chain? Share them in the comment section!
