How to Save Money with Online Coupon Codes

Updated on September 22, 2011

If you already use coupons to save money when shopping at the grocery store, don’t forget that you can apply the same frugal tactics to your online purchases as well. Of course, it’s even easier to use coupons when you’re shopping online because you don’t need to mess with clipping a million different tiny pieces of paper. All you need to do is enter a few letters and/or numbers into a special box on the checkout portion of your favorite website.

Finding Online Coupon Codes

Online coupon codes, also known as promo codes, promotional codes, or online coupons, are limited time only offers. Most are valid for a few weeks, but the very best deals may be good for only a day or two. This means you need to stay on top of your favorite store’s marketing efforts in order to make sure you’re getting the best discounts.

While you can sign up for free email newsletters to learn about sales, promotions, and coupon codes from a website, this often results in a lot of unnecessary email clogging up your inbox. If you don’t shop at a store on a weekly basis, you don’t need to hear about every offer that is available, right?

Websites offering searchable databases of online coupon codes make it easy to save money by providing a quick way to search for the exact coupon you need when you need it. For example, CouponSnapshot offers coupon codes from retailers selling everything from clothing and home décor to books and electronics. Some of the stores featured include:

  • Buy.com
  • Amazon
  • Drugstore.com
  • Company Kids
  • Best Buy
  • Dell.com
  • Sears
  • Abe Books
  • Sports Authority

Some of the many different promotional codes available on CouponSnapshot include free shipping, a specific dollar amount off a minimum purchase, a percentage amount off your entire order, or a free gift with purchase. The site also includes offers for special deals on specific products, such as sales on certain laptop models.

How to Use Online Coupon Codes

Using online coupon codes is very easy. Most retailers have a special promotional code box at the bottom of your shopping cart page where you can enter the code of your choice. Some stores, such as Kohl’s, will allow you to use more than one coupon code at a time. However, it is becoming increasingly common for retailers to limit you to one promotional code per order. If this is the case, you may want to try applying and removing several different codes before placing your final order. This will help you determine which online coupon code offers the best possible savings.

The majority of coupon codes do not place restrictions upon the payment method you can use in order to receive the discount, but it’s important to remember that some stores do have special offers that are only for people with a store credit card. For example, Victoria’s Secret has some online coupon codes that will only work if you pay for your order with a Victoria’s Secret store credit card.

If you use rewards programs such as Upromise and Ebates, coupon codes will not affect any benefits you receive from these sites. The online coupon code and the rewards program are two entirely separate ways to save.

Good information. Many people, even though they read and hear about possible savings, still do not take the time to benefit from the deals that can be found.

Thanks for this. I always look for coupon codes before I buy anything, but I didn't know about CouponSnapshot or Upromise.

I used CouponSnapshot, it seems good, they have the exclusive coupon code section, savvy shoppers could check with this section, it could save us more and find the coupons which you can not find on any other coupon sites.

I love online coupon codes. I usually do a quick search before buying something to see if I can find a code to use. I don't think I've ever used CouponSnapshot before, thanks!
