How to Splurge on Yourself - When to Have Fun and Save Money

Updated on April 2, 2016

How to Pamper Yourself

Do you ever feel like it’s just time to spend some money on yourself? If you’re like me, this is one of the hardest things to do. You might treat other people—your spouse, your kids, even your pets—before daring to spend money on yourself. At some point, though, a splurge on yourself is necessary to help you feel special, too. Some things I’ll splurge on are personal products, such as beauty items that make me feel pampered. Here are some ways I like to splurge to make myself feel that I’m important, too.

Use quality hair products

Let’s face it. We all want to look good. Even when I’m working from home, there are days that I just feel better when I fix my hair and put on makeup. A fun splurge for me is a high quality hair product that moisturizes my hair, making it soft and luxurious—or perhaps a spray or oil that adds extra shine to my curls. Although I am frugal, the cheap stuff just doesn’t do the job as well, so there are times when I need to spend a little more to get the look I want for my hair, if only for special occasions.

Use good makeup products

As far as make-up, I don’t wear a lot of it, but I have found that there are certain things I can’t skimp on. I can use a cheaper powder or blush, perhaps, but I have to have a high-quality, often more expensive mascara. To me, this is a practical splurge. When I recently bought a higher-priced mascara (as opposed to the dollar store variety), my eye irritations went away. Plus, my nondescript eyelashes suddenly looked longer and fuller! Now, when I don’t feel like putting on makeup, I can at least put on my mascara to give my eyes some definition and add just a touch of glamour.

Special fragrances

Smelling good is important, too. I like to treat myself with special fragrances from time to time. Even when I don’t splurge on nice perfumes and colognes, I will often smooth on a fragrant lotion that adds just a hint of a scent. A thick, creamy lotion offers a dual purpose, as having skin that is supple and soft to the touch is a nice benefit of quality skin products.

Audrey--When I recently bought new--and more expensive--mascara, I felt that I was really treating myself. That cheap stuff was making my eyes itch. I bought some that said something about "fake lashes" and my lashes do show up so much better and actually look longer. Yay! Go for it, Audrey. Splurge on yourself! Don't stop at just the mascara!

You're so cute, Ardie! You have to splurge on certain things! The hair and makeup is much more important than the purses (I buy them at yard sales!) and nails (did that once!). You're doing all right, girl!

Cardisa--how could you look awful? I doubt that. I sometimes spend more on my hair, too. Thanks for the comments!

Well drats! I feel superficial and spoiled now... I don't spend a ton of money on high dollar purses and getting my nails done but I HAVE to have my higher end makeup and hair products...I blame it on my sensitive skin and frizzy red hair :)

Joyce--That sounds like a fun splurge. That's great as long as you don't do it all the time, right? Thanks for sharing that!

I can't say I am frugal by nature, more like being frugal by necessity. I spend on things that make me look and feel better bot on the inside and out. For instance I will spend any amount that makes my hair softer and shinier. I love colognes and scented lotions and I will splurge on those. Lately, I have been ignoring myself but that must change as I now look awful!

Very tempting and great ways to splurge on myself. IT feels really good, if you spend less and splurge. Voted up.

      Very interesting Victoria.

When I splurge I go to Sephora inside JC Penneys, the last I did this came away having spent $70 for about four items, I know that was a huge splurge but that was last November and I haven't been back yet.

      Voted up and interesting, Joyce.
