Hy-Vee Fuel Saver Program

Hy-Vee, a major grocery store chain in the Midwest, has started a fuel discount program called Fuel Saver. When you buy certain grocery items at Hy-Vee during the month, your gas discount increases. The gas discount works at Hy-Vee gas stations and Casey's General Store gas stations.

Signing up for Hy-Vee Fuel Saver

In order to get the fuel savings, you need to sign up for the Fuel Saver program. The sign-up involves completing a simple form with information such as your name, address, and e-mail address. Hy-Vee stores currently have tables near the front of the store where you can sign up. After you sign up, you get a set of Fuel Saver cards: one the size of a credit card, and two small cards that could be placed on a key chain. The cards are ready to use right away.

Adding Fuel Savings to your Fuel Saver Card

When you purchase certain items, you get a fuel discount added to your fuel saver card. For example, tonight one of the items with a Fuel Saver discount was milk: 5 center per gallon of fuel savings. I bought 2 gallons of milk (different kinds since there was a limit of one to get the fuel savings). This got me up to 10 cents per gallon fuel savings. There was also a special discount of 10 additional cents for all shoppers, so I was up to 20 cents per gallon of fuel savings just by buying 2 gallons of milk.

I could have added another 40 cents or so per gallon by purchasing things like Doritos, Hershey's Kisses, bananas, etc. The specific items that qualify for fuel savings vary each week.

One great feature of this program is that the fuel discount lasts all month. I can get the 20 cent per gallon fuel discount all month even if I don't buy anything else. You can add to the discount all month as you continue to buy groceries. The fuel savings you earn expire after 30 days after the qualifying purchase.

Saving at the Pump with Hy-Vee Fuel Saver

I was ready to try out the fuel savings. I was driving on fumes since I was planning to go to Hy-Vee to load up the fuel saver card before filling up. I went to the Hy-Vee gas station right next to the Hy-Vee grocery store. The fuel discount works at the many Casey's gas stations in the area as well.

Out of paranoia, I checked gas prices at other gas stations nearby. The going rate at all gas stations in the area was $3.49 per gallon of standard unleaded. I swiped my credit card at the pump, then was prompted to swipe my Hy-Vee Fuel Saver card. When I did, the price dropped to $3.29. My savings for the tank: $1.88. Nice!

Penny Pinching Tips

  • Avoid buying items you don't really need just to increase your fuel discount
  • Plan shopping trips to keep your fuel discount active- the fuel discount you earn remains in effect for 30 days after the qualifying purchase
  • I carry one of the small cards in my wallet to use to add fuel discount at the grocery store and keep the large card in my glove box to swipe at the pump when buying fuel
  • Depending on how much you shop at Hy-Vee and how much gas you buy, most people could save $50 per month or more

bubba, I agree that sometimes Fuel Saver isn't a good deal- but sometimes it is. It depends on the item. Sometimes I find a good price and get a fuel saver too. Thanks for your comment.

I compared the fuel saver item 2 cent fuel saver off a 2 for $6.00 item so if I bought this item I would save 40 cents off 20 gallon of gas which would get that item down to $5.60. The same item is on sale at another store in town for 2/ $4.00. So now I have $1.60 more in my pocket and can buy almost a half gallon of gas. Wake up people it is not that good of a deal.

I think the Hy-Vee program is very popular, so maybe it will spread to grocery stores in Canada someday...

I like the idea of the "Fuel Saver Card" but I don't think it's available in Canada :-(
