If I Could Be a Superhero, I would be..."Grocerywoman"
I feel so bad when I hear people complain about the cost of groceries and how they can't afford to feed their families. I feel worse when I realize there is a whole world out there who doesn't know how to save money on their groceries using coupons, sales, buying store brands, etc.
If I could be a superhero, I would want to hang out in grocery stores with a funky cape and cool skirt and top with lots of pockets so I could follow people around and hand out coupons to them for items they have in their carts already. I would jump out from behind cereal displays with coupons in hand, or pop out of those great walls of Pepsi they have stacked up six feet high and give shoppers coupons on their products. I would stand out at the entrance of the store, looking surprisingly sexy and cute in my tights and short skirt, with all the pockets full of coupons and store flyers with the deals circled to hand out to all the sad people coming into the store. Once they saw me and got handfuls of savings, they would walk into the store smiling and realize that they can save money if they just pay attention and put a little work into watching for sales and combining every sale on an item with the coupon to double their savings. And when they needed an item that was not on sale, or there was not an available coupon for it, they would heed my words and remember to check the price of the store brand of the item they needed. If I were this superhero, "Grocerywoman" I would have a coupon bin in every grocery store, department store, and pharmacy, where people could check for the coupons they needed before going into the store, to save money once they got into the store with their shopping list. I would fly from city to city ( with my superhero flying powers of course) to hold coupon classes in libraries and church basements, spreading the word about how to save money and not let families go hungry because they can't afford to grocery shop. I would go to all the ends of the earth, where coupons are used of course, and teach these classes. And I would teach social service agencies and churches how to organize their members into coupon savers and have them meet to compare notes and share coupon fliers so as a group they could begin to get deals on food and add this food to their food pantries and have more to share with those who have not learned how to save...yet. I would make sure that members of these same social service organizations and churches in big cities from New York to Los Angeles, and from Chicago to New Orleans would learn to be Coupon Kings and Queens so that no one would ever have to go hungry again. IO would fly to the poorest areas of the Appalachians and the coldest parts of Alaska, and teach people how to save money and share savings resources. Instead of fighting crime, I would fight hunger.
And as people would see me fly by, they would say, with a smile, and a full stomach, "There goes Grocerywoman....helping to feed the world one family at a time." Yes, if I were a superhero, I would be "Grocerywoman."
When I worked in a grocery store as a Consumer Advocate 10 years ago, I was fortunate to be able to teach these classes and hand out coupons to customers for items that were already in their cart. The store owner did let me teach classes in his store about how to save money, and it was a wonderful experience to be able to help people learn these skills. He also had a coupon bin built so people could drop off their unused coupons and go through the coupons others had dropped off to see if there was anything they could use. The owner of the store retired, and I was no longer able to keep that position. Although this was an attempt at a funny description of a dream of mine, I would really like to do this because so many families, especially children, would not have to go to bed hungry. If any of you know of a cape, a cute outfit with big pockets, and some magic flying powers to help me accomplish my dream, please let me know!
