Is the Penny Worthless?

Updated on May 22, 2016

What do you think about pennies?

Some people believe the worth of pennies has gone down the trash. Their argument being you can't buy anything for 1ยข. Pennies are never really used for anything, occasionally just to finish the rest of your payment.

To buy anything, even a pack of gum, you would need a whole load of pennies. If you try to pay for anything with pennies you're most likely going to get dirty looks from the cashiers. Pennies actually take more time at the cash register.

Pennies are dirty, and nobody likes having a bunch of jangling coins in their pocket.

Besides, they are close to worthless, and cost more money to produce and consume natural resources, all for a cent that won't buy you squat.

On the contrary, some people believe we need the penny. They're still coins, and added up can actually be useful.

Some Americans feel very passionately about the coins. According to ' Americans For Common Cents' their poll has showed that more than two-thirds of Americans want to keep the penny.

They keep prices low. If pennies were gone, the rounding tax would be based of a higher coin, and it would add up for people using cash.

Also, Americans argue that pennies honor Lincoln. It wouldn't be very American to get rid of these pennies. They're a part of our culture.

What do you think? What do you do with your pennies? Do you think pennies should be eliminated? Tell me what you think in the comments below.
