Making Money Online

Times are tough and many people are looking for ways to make some extra money online. So you do a search on Google for "Making Money Online" and quickly discover a million web sites that are all trying to sell you something. Maybe you took the bait and bought one and then you were quickly disappointed because it failed to deliver as promised.

Well don't worry I'm not going to try and sell you one thing here, ask you to sign up to my mailing list so I can resell you email address or any other such nonsense. I plan to only deliver the goods here. Do we have a deal? Sweet proceed then.

Can you make money online? Sure you can, anyone can, hell even a kid can do it if they know how. And there lies the secret, knowing how. How much would you be willing to pay for this magical secret many search for constantly, but few ever find? Some pay $29.95, others pay hundreds and even thousands of dollars each and every minute.

Some of these programs are good. But many don't give you everything you need. Or they are too technical for the average user to grasp. I will try and avoid as much technical jargon as possible and explain the ones I do use so you do get it. And If you don't understand anything there is a comment section at the very bottom were I will do my best to answer your questions, and if I don't know the answer then I will do some research to figure it out for us both.

Content Is King

Before you can ever worry about making money you first must have some sort of content that you can monetize. This could be a cool picture you took, a great article you have written, a computer program you programmed, a video or even a great eBook.

Please ask yourself this question: What is it that you absolutely love to do? Is it writing, or painting, hiking, fixing cars? Maybe its cooking or following the latest fashion trends. Your online venture should closely align with whatever it is that gets you all hot and bothered.

You will enjoy what your doing because you love it already. Your work will be great because the passion you have for this hobby will shine so brightly others will need sunglasses to even view your magnificent creations! Pick what you love and it won't never seem like work. And when you do start making money, friends and possibly a little bit of fame you won't never regret going into work ever again.

Even if going into to work means rolling out of bed and sitting down in front of your PC or laptop you will be happy. I doubt you will miss spending money on gas, fighting traffic or all of the backstabbing, ladder climbing corporate weasels. Umm I mean your friendly coworkers. Yes them.

So whatever it is that's your passion, you can write about it and make money from it as many people every day are searching for your knowledge and expertise.

Web hosting

Now that you have some content you need a place to put it. While I would like to suggest that the most professional way to put your best foot forward online is to buy your own domain name, pick out a good web hosting provider, pay someone to design and program a web site for you. Or learn web design yourself... But I know all of this is probably just too much to learn quickly for the average user.

If you do think this is the route you would like to take then I suggest you first learn How To Pick A Good Domain Name as this step in the process is very important if you wish to do well on the almighty Google.

Otherwise you do not have to worry about all of these things because you can easily publish your content on free web sites that won't cost you a dime. Typically they show advertisements in exchange for the free space on their web hosting servers, which really isn't a bad deal at all. But it doesn't look so professional either when compared to your own .com. It is a trade off you must be willing to make

But I have an even better suggestion for you. You can write about just about anything you would like, within reason and HubPages TOS, and publish it right here on HubPages for free AND they will actually share 60% of the advertising revenue with you! How sweet is that?

Free web hosting and you can make money to boot. Will you get rich overnight? Probably not. Will this cost you a dime to try? Nope not one red cent. Do some users here make money? Yes quite a few do. The very best of the best make over a thousand dollars per month. Quite a few make $100 or more per month from doing what they love, writing about things they know a lot about. Many only make pocket change.

I believe it takes the average user around 6 months to make Google's AdSense minimum payout thresh hold of $100. Some faster, some slower. The harder you work at this, the quicker you will see results. Just don't expect overnight results, it probably just isn't going to happen.

Like anything else in life what you get out of it will depend on how hard you work at learning what works and implementing it on a consistent basis.

If you would like to try and make a go at it right here on HubPages then go Join HubPages. Then come back here so I can finish helping you to get started. I do feel obligated to tell you that by following my link that I will receive 10% of the advertising revenue from your efforts. But don't worry this comes out of HubPages end, not yours.

Besides I now have a vested interest in seeing that you succeed. The better you do, the better I do. :)

If you decided to create your own web site then teaching you HTML, CSS, PHP, MySql, JavaScript and Ajax is well beyond the scope of this hub. Google is your best friend about now. I would suggest you check out my WYSIWYG HTML guide thats perfect to get started making a web site for those who got lost in my acronym soup fest above.

Feel Free to skip this section, but I must keep my word :)

Ok to keep to my word even though it takes me a bit off topic.

  • HTML stands for HyperText Markup Language. It is the basic markup language all web pages use to turn text and pictures into links, create a table of tabular data and much more.
  • CSS stands for Cascading Style Sheets. CSS is used to determine how a web page will look basically. When done properly it makes web pages look pretty. I suck at CSS :(
  • PHP used to stand for Personal Home Pages. Now PHP stands for PHP: Hypertext Preprocessor. PHP is a web server side programming language that allows webmasters to create dynamic web sites that actually "Do" something. Like letting you login.
  • MySQL stands for My SQL. So MySQL stands for My Structured Query Language. MySQL is a relational database management system that stores information like your username and password from when you registered so when you login you can be identified.
  • JavaScript is a client side programming language that runs in your browser that does useful things like making sure you didn't forget your name when filling out a form before submitting it to the web server.
  • Ajax stands for Asynchronous JavaScript And XML. XML is similar to HTML kinda, but not exactly. Ajax allows a small portion of a web page to retrieve new data without having to reload the whole thing. Google Gmail and Google Maps both make heavy use of Ajax. Ajax is pure awesomeness in can!

Back To Our Regulary Scheduled Program

Ok is everyone happy now? Trust me you could spend years trying to learn and master all of these things I just described that are necessary to make a decent web page. You could also use a WYSIWYG for the simpler parts of that complex geekazoid mess. Or just use the easy to use tools right here on and forget I ever put you through that acronym hell.

I am going to skip over how to make a Hub since I feel most users won't have too much trouble figuring out the very simple to use tools provided here. You can always send me a site email and I'll be glad to share with you a ton of hubs that I have bookmarked from the very best here.

At the end of this hub look for some links to get you started making hubs the right way.

Advertising Revenue

Many web sites give away their content for free, like I am here, and make their money from the advertisements hoping the occasional user clicks on one of the advertisements. This online business model is the easiest to get started with because you do not have to setup all of those complicated things like shopping carts, merchant accounts nor worry about billing issues.

I have also included an Amazon capsule here so if you didn't get enough of my Acronym Hell you can buy some web design books and subject yourself to as much abuse as you would like on a daily basis. Who knows you may even begin to like it, I won't tell. It will be our little secret.

Amazon and eBay pay affiliates here for selling their products. The more you buy, the more money I make. So please return here next Christmas and let me be your guide to the online wonderland known as Amazon. I will give you the VIP tour and be serving my finest gourmet coffee.

So far you have decided what you like to do, how your going to publish it. Either a free web site. Or you put yourself through hell until you go mad trying to figure out why that code doesn't do what you think it should do while making your own web site or the smart choice which is using HubPages.

Build It And They Will Come

I'm sorry but this is an absolute lie when it comes to online publishing 99.99% of the time. If the world can't find you, they can't read the dazzling brilliance that drips from every word you utter.

To get traffic to your online creation you have two basic choices. Either pay for it or get it for free. Each has positive and negatives aspects. But I bet you can guess which one I prefer already. This is what I'm best at so if you learn nothing else here be sure to memorize what I'm about to teach you next. It is literally worth thousands of dollars and no I'm not exaggerating one single bit.

Free Traffic

Companies online pay hundreds of dollars and even thousands of dollars for what is known as SEO. SEO is an acronym for Search Engine Optimization. The basic concept is by highly optimizing your web page or hub better than your competition you outrank them on Google, Yahoo and Bing search engines for what are called Keywords or Keyword Phrases. When you type something that your looking for into Google, what your typing in is called a Keyword. When you come up naturally without paying for it this is called an organic listing. In contrast if you was to pay via a PPC, Pay Per Click, listing this is called a paid listing, or PPC advertisement.

Anyone can do their own SEO work, just like making money even a kid can do this stuff. The secret is knowing "How". First you need to choose Good Keywords to target well paying keywords so you make some money online. For a great introduction to on page SEO optimization techniques I have used for years to achieve many top ten and even #1's on all the major search engines go and read my Effective Keyword Usage On HubPages. While this hub only covers one piece of the pie, mostly on page optimization techniques, it is a major component to getting a good start.

Look for more traffic generating techniques I use in future hubs yet to be written.

And with that I must end this novel before runs out of disk space to store this beast of a Hub. I do plan to reveal more tips and tricks in future hubs so be sure to check back. Or even better you can Follow Me to more easily be notified when I publish a new hub.

One last tip. To really succeed on HubPages it helps to have a lot of friends to learn from, who will encourage you and give you new ideas. And a great way to meet many new friends is to attract new Followers. So go and learn How To Get More Followers on HubPages now while I get some much needed sleep. Zzzzzz see you soon my friends.

I got the idea for this hub after reading one of Rebecca E.'s hubs. Making Money Online: Time, Luck, Content and Traffic. Her hub gives a different viewpoint on this subject.

Getting Started Making HubPages

I will include some links to help you get off to a good start. Most of these hubs were written by top hubbers here. Learn from the best.

I probably will add more content to this hub, I just ran out of gas and needed sleep.

I totally agree with you dohn121. The harder we work, the bigger the payoff. I have received many checks from Google over the years. I have one right now waiting for me, but I put it on hold so it could grow larger.
