How to Make Extra Money in college

Updated on April 10, 2011

Ideas for Making Extra Cash in College

College is a time in most peoples lives when they are not necessarily rolling in dough. College students usually don't have much extra money, but it doesn't have to be that way. There are plenty of ways to make a little extra money in college.

  1. Get a Job: This one is obvious, and so it needs no further explanation. I mention it because a job will probably get you the most money, and be the most reliable.
  2. Collect Cans: Don't be afraid to look like a hobo. If you live in a college dorm, just take a look at the recycle bins and you will see there is money to be had there. I've collected $36 worth of cans in a week, but to start aim for $12. This won't work in every state but if yours has a 5 cent deposit take advantage of the free money.
  3. Cut Hair: If you have a relatively cheap pair of clippers, a chair, and a towel you can setup a little barber shop out of your room on the weekends. You won't have much overhead so your prices can be cheap, and pretty soon you'll have plenty of business.
  4. Sell Food: This is my favorite idea. People like to eat late on the weekends (whether they are studying, drinking, or getting high), so take advantage of it. Make cookies, brownies and other baked goods for those with with the sweet teeth. For the ones who want "real" food setup a George Foreman and make grilled cheese, hot dogs, and quesadillas. This is all cheap food that nearly everyone likes. I've made $120 in a single Saturday night doing this. Price things anywhere from a $1 to $2 and make sure you stay open well after midnight.
  5. Use the Internet: There are so many ways to make money online that i can't even name them all. Do you your research and be wary of scams. If it sounds to good to be true then it probably is. Some ideas include: survey sites (pay to take surveys), PTC sites (pay you to click on adds), writing a blog and adding Google AdSense to it, writing articles on sites like Triond, hub pages, and E-how, completing free offers, affiliate marketing and more. If you want reviews of various sites where you can make money online checkout "Online Money Making Sites" linked to below.

There are many other ways to make extra money, like Djing, and computer repair, but i just named a few to give you ideas. Really it's up to you to decide what you do well, and utilize that to your advantage.
