How to raise $10,000 - Updated

If you have a dream which requires money such as a trip some of my suggestions, tips and tricks might just help you. It doesn't matter how much or how little you earn it is the desire and dedication of effort that will make your dream come true.In

In February 2012 I wrote about how to create an additional 10K for a trip. I am happy to say that the tickets were bought and we had an amazing time. I am now re-creating the goal by raising $12Kplus for our trip to Italy in 2013.

Background.

My Mum lives in the UK - she can't travel to us because of her medical condition. That meant I needed to create $10,000 to cover the cost of flights and expenses for myself and my daughters to travel to see her. We also wanted to travel to Paris.

As the sole income earner for our family, raising two teenage daughters, I do not have lots of change left at the end of every month. In fact, during the month oftentimes the "-" sign on my bank account appears when I think I should have a + sign!

I have, over the years attempted to save 10% of what I bring home and, sadly, usually find I need to use at least part of that for an unexpected bill or because someone needs new shoes/boots a jacket or tap shoes.

I have tried and not succeeded at different supplemental income chains including Discovery Toys - gave most of my stock away as gifts, Mary Kaye, ended up doing "free" makeovers and Niken - a magnetizing health care product that de-magnetized my investment into nought! MLM is not for me.

My work in the community social non profit sector is personally and professionally rewarding but not so much financially and we don't get overtime so extra hours are not an option.

I also make jewellery and silk scarves, write and facilitate motivational and expressive art workshops.

Generating Ideas to make additional income.

Here are some ideas I came up with based on my professional and creative abilities..

Selling some jewellery - if I make enough stock and sell 1,000 items with an average of a $10.00 profit that would net $10,000

Facilitate workshops - registering 35 people at $100 each over three dates in my local community - after paying for room space and advertising expenses I would have about $9,500.

Package up a course I ran for free last year - The Gift Project - and sell it to community agencies and individuals who are looking for a quality self development and motivational art program. If I sell 143 at $70.00 that would net me $10,000 as well.

Create more traffic to my hub and other blog sites - would increase the pennies I am currently earning to earn $1,000 a month. I would need to spend money getting help to do this and learn about marketing and SEO.

Making it Work

The difference between an idea to create more income and the reality of actually depositing those pennies in the bank takes commitment to follow through. I was surprised by how many of my friends looked at my list and said wow, that's a lot of work.

Thomas Edison said "“We often miss opportunity because it's dressed in overalls and looks like work”

I wish I could say that I came up with a sure fire way to create money just by working extra hard - however what I can say is that through writing down what I wanted, being clear with my goals and objectives and following through on trying to make things happen, the money came and it came in differently from how I had planned. The process also allowed me to examine what is important to me in my life - was it the creation of wealth and money alone or the creation of wealth and money to support me to be able to do the things that are important to me and those I love. The answer for me is the latter.

The future

Now I have pre-set opportunities to create additional income not just for a special trip but to supplement my income in a way that also supports my creativity and sense of accomplishment.

If you have a dream that requires additional money consider what you are good at that is beyond how you ordinarily make a living. Ask yourself if you are willing to make time in your life to put on those overalls and what your motivation truly is. Understand that and you will create success. Be prepared for it to look different and be flexible with how and when it comes.

We can all dream and dreams are important - however missed opportunity may, in later life, also lead to regret. Sometimes dreams are not our own - they belong to to other people and we find ourselves striving against what we truly really need or want.

If it's important to you then do it. If not, let it go and appreciate what you have now - it is enough.

“Happiness is when what you think, what you say, and what you do are in harmony.” Ghandi.

I think that you should try the jewelry, gift project and marketing your scarfs all at once if at all possible.

Work shops seem time consuming, and unless you can market them under the community art heading, aren't they difficult to market?

If I had 4 ideas that would net me $10K each, I would consider taking them all on in the order that you mentioned. It seems like adding more traffic to your site one is doable and so are the others. It just takes careful time, effort, and planning. The planning you could do in tandem or overlap projects. This way you could visit your mom with $30K or more in savings and instead of being in the red each month you could be on your way towards building wealth.

I think you should concentrate on 2...one would be adding more traffic to your site because that's something you could do from home, at night early mornings, whenever you can squeeze in a few moments here and there, as well as go after one of the other ideas. Why don't you pick the one idea you like most out of all of them, and concentrate on that. Good luck. I'm looking forward to watching you accomplish your goal.

Would your course lend itself to publication as a Kindle e-book? (There are lots of hubs on how to do this so I won't go into it) If so, it's something you could do and then keep pursuing your other ideas. Also I have a friend who has done very well from making costume jewellery and selling it just via a facebook page and to friends. Good luck in achieving your goal, I'm sure it's very possible.

You make wonderful jewelry (anything you make is wonderful actually), but when I had the opportunity to be a part of the "Gift Project"...I was simply amazed at how incredible it was and I think that everyone should have an opportunity to experience it. I really think it would sell!!! You are truly amazing! xo

You have wonderful ideas and seriously I would be the wrong person to ask because I so totally believe in the ability of any of us to accomplish what we set out to if only we can apply ourselves. The workshop sounds really good and though involving, the investment of finances may be lesser (not very sure). I am certain though that, no matter what happens, you and your kids are traveling to Europe this coming June! Best wishes and enjoy your stay. Next time we will probably hear that you have started yourself a lucrative business out of whatever works here.

How about selling your jewelry at a local art fair or swap meet? At the same time, you could package it with your business card leading to your websites and hubpages profile (2 birds with 1 stone). The Gift Project sounds interesting too...is there a way to sell it to senior centers, youth programs, ymca or community colleges? Good luck!

Wow, very interesting indeed, I'm not sure which you should do, I guess which one will drive you the most to get the 10,000. Couldn't you do a bit of all of them. Anyway I wish you all the very best with this and I hope you keep us up to date with it. Voted up and tweeted it for you. Oh I'm in the UK :)
