Recycling Scrap Metal For Cash

Updated on August 20, 2013

Getting Started

Recycling scrap metal will take some effort but it is something that can be done to earn extra cash and even to start a new business. There are people that collect a little and there are people that earn a decent living by doing this everyday. If you have a large vehicle like a truck or van then you have the right size vehicle for hauling scrap metal. To collect scrap metal one has to keep their eyes open because you never know when you will find something that you can use. The perfect days to look for scrap is the day of trash collection. Make sure you start out hours earlier than the time your neighborhood trash disposal service provider pick up trash. There are many different types of metal that can be recycled. So be watchful and make sure you collect enough to make your efforts worth your time.

Be Creative & Earn

Copper wire can be used in more than one way to earn some extra money. Copper can be extracted from old electronics and sold to scrap metal recycling places or the wire can be used to make jewelry. There are a lot of people that make copper jewelry and sale it for a living. If you are going to sell it to scrap metal places then it would need to be weighed just as any other metal. To make a decent amount of money, then a person would need a lot of it since they pay by the pound.

Unstripped copper wire which is copper wire that has the rubber on the outside of the wire sells for less money than the wire that has already been striped. Once a person opens up electronics then they will notice that some of the wire is stripped and some is not. If you are a person that wants to take the time to strip the wire which does not take very long with a wire stripper, then it will be well worth the money.

Sell Wire & Earn

You can find wire in just about all electronics. This is where wire cutters come in handy. You do not need to strip this wire as you would if you wanted to make more money from stripping copper wire because with this type of wire it won't make a difference. You can even sell your old Christmas lights that do not work. There are people that will go as far as not breaking down appliances and electronics because they just don't have the time or don't feel like it but if you take the time to separate everything then you will make more money.

There are people that make money by making jewelry and other fashion items like this dress that is pictured. It is really amazing how trash can become treasure. I can remember when I was a small child my sister and I would collect this type of wire and make bracelets and anything else that would come to mind. There is nothing hard at all about doing this either. All you need to do is clip the wire close to the end. Throw it into a bucket or container and have them weigh it.

Scrap Metal

Metal That Sells

Making money from selling scrap metal is one of the easiest ways to earn. How many times have we thrown away a refrigerator, microwave, radio, television, or just anything that has metal in it and not know that it may have been valuable? Anything that has metal in it or is made from metal can be recycled.

If you are a person that has the patience to open up old electronics then even the smallest of pieces can be saved. The small pieces can be put in a bucket or even stored in larger items that will be recycled. For example: If you have old earrings that are metal and maybe they are broken, you can save those in soup cans. Those soup cans are valuable to because they are also metal. The best way to prepare to recycle your soup cans is to wash them out when you wash your dishes then turn them over so that they can dry out and once they dry out then store them in garbage bags or boxes. You can take the labeling off if you like but you don't have to.

Examples of metal that can be recycled:

Jewelry, Vehicles, Bicycles, Appliances, Pots & Pans, Bed Springs, Baby Strollers, Tables & Chairs, Clothes Hangers, Bar-B-Que Grills, & Sewing Machines.

Scrap Gold

Silver

Aluminum

The Gold Business!

Recycling scrap gold seems to be the going thing today. If you have broken jewelry that is real gold you can take it to a place that buys gold and earn cash. They will not take jewelry that is gold plated. They will test your jewelry to see if it is real or not. There are times when people try to pull fast ones on them but they are highly trained in this area. Selling scrap gold is just like anything else, you must have enough of it to see a real profit.

Anything that is real gold including those gold teeth that you no longer want can be recycled. Did you know that there is gold in the older model computers and on the inside of cell phones? Before you throw away your old computer you might want to consider opening it up and removing the memory boards. You can do the same thing to your old cell phones and sell them on Ebay. No wonder we see collection boxes in certain places that read, recycle your old cell phone here.

You could even start your own recycling business collecting cell phones and old computers from friends and family members. You could even pass out flyers and collect from people that you do not know. The gold can either be sold as is or refined and then sold. If you choose to have the gold refined you should call ahead before you make this decision to see who takes this type of gold. I find it easier and less cost effective to sell it as is.

Sell Silver For Profit

Usually, you can sell silver at the same places where you sell gold. They will check to see if the silver is real just as they would with gold. They will not take anything that is silver coated and they usually look for the number nine twenty five somewhere on your items. If you have old broken jewelry or silver serving trays and dishes or just anything that is real silver will be considered.

Make Money With Aluminum

The next time you think about throwing away a soda can, think about the fact that you are throwing away money. Computers are another place where you can find aluminum. Do an online search and type in Google images, aluminum inside computers. This way you will be able to see what it looks like. Believe it or not, if you enjoy vienna sausages then you will be surprised to know that the cans are aluminum.

Selling scrap metal can not only be fun but very rewarding. It may take some time to collect enough to make any real money but it is definitely profitable. There are several places where you can find and collect scrap metal. Even in places where you would not consider. By asking people to help you in your collection, your job will be even easier. A person could collect as much or as little as they need but either way recycling metal for cash is the way to go!
