Selling: Are My Things of Value to Sell Them

I have tried to sell my items on eBay in the past. Some items sell. Some items don't even get a view. What seems to make the difference?

Is it what I am selling? Am I trying to sell an item that nobody seems to need?

Is it timing? Am I trying to sell an item that is seasonal or that not many buyers are simply searching for?

Is my item too old, too new, dusty.. or is there some reason that my item is not attracting attention. Am I listing my item in the correct spot. Am I calling it by it's commonly called name?

A Few Years Ago...

Yes. A few years ago, I purchased some information from a webpage that talked about how many people were making money on eBay because they were buying items that weren't selling, and then they were re-listing them on a new sales auction and then, when the item sold, they'd have the item shipped to the third person.

I have never tried to do something like that. You run the risk of not getting the first item. My worst episode came one day when I was selling a Precious Moments Teddy Bear for a friend. I listed the figurine. Someone bid on it and when I went to my friends house to collect the bear to ship it, she informed me that she didn't have that particular bear. That somehow, in my efforts to make up a list or inventory of her bears, I had gotten someone else's list involved with hers. The bear that I tried to sell, simply wasn't in her collection.

That was excruciatingly embarrassing, since the bear wasn't mine, the bear didn't exist and now I had to explain it to the buyer who was waiting, thrilled that my bear was going to be shipped shortly.


A Long Time Ago..

I did have a few sales in the past fifteen years. I had a robot that I had Antiques Roadshow evaluate. The show was in town and was visiting houses in the area. The appraiser came to the house and looked through a sample of my collectibles.

At the time, I had a robot that I had received as a gift in the late 1960's when the first man put his foot on the moon. I was never allowed to play with it much, since when it was on it emitted a loud, almost annoying whistle that wasn't acceptable in our quiet house. So. For years, I had the robot laying in a box with a few other toys that I had from my childhood. The two spirographs that my grandmother gave me in the same year. One on my birthday and the second at Christmas. I still, to this day, have most of the original pieces from the two sets. The little green pins, the colored ball point pens, the assorted sizes of gear wheels with numbered holes in them. The cardboard that you were supposed to pin the gears to. Some paper that I used to do my first projects in 1974. You know.

Anyways... back to the robot. I talked to the Roadshow person and he remarked that the robot was a common robot and that he'd be willing to offer me $275 dollars for it.

Warning bells went off in my head. He was willing to give me that much since he would turn around and make a few dollars when he resold it.

Well. I kept it and put it on eBay. I asked $275 for it right away on eBay. I believe that I recall that the robot did sell for $331 dollars. A toy company in Singapore had me ship it to them. I suppose they could probably take it apart and make a pattern from it and make new robots from the design. Who knows.

Some Things Did Not Sell

Frankly, I had a lot of items that did not sell. My opinion is that if you have watchers for an item that you perhaps have overpriced, the watchers are merely curious to know if you are going to pull it off and sell that item.

They probably have a couple hundred of that item themselves... just waiting to list.

You just never know.

Blue in the Face

I could blab on for hours on what I think might sell. That doesn't tell a person anything about what would actually sell.

I had to have my computer looked at the other day. I was looking to upgrade my Toshiba to Windows 10. I had received a bunch of pop ups about the Free Upgrade. My machine wasn't eligible. Since I live close to a larger city with many electronics stores with computers for sale, I went shopping. I learned that the latest thing is Windows 10. That Office 365 is the new software for having the programs I have used for years. The program that I like is Word. It was part of the Microsoft Works 6.0 software. No longer in use. There are different kinds of processors for the computers. There are AMD processors and there are several Pentiums to choose from. The computer that I purchased that day, had 1 TB of Storage, it had Pentium i7, instead of i3 or i5. It had 6 MB of memory.

Well. It didn't come with Word. Which was a problem. Plus, I write and my Word documents were inaccessible. I ended up taking the new computer back and purchasing Windows 10 on a USB stick and a piece of paper that promised to give me Office 365.

Well, then, the download for Office 365 ate up 4 GB of my jetpacks data limit and the program crashed at 80 percent. Verizon didn't feel any sympathy for my loss and told me that I needed to upgrade my Jetpack to a newer pack. I decided that the Jetpack wasn't the problem. Then, I went to Office Depot and they, for a mere $39 installed my Office for me.

Unfortunately, there was a glitch. Yes. They were successful in installing Office 365 on my desktop, but, when I opened the Word Documents that I had on the computer, they were in compatibility mode. So I closed them.

Then, frustrated, I logged off.

Later that evening, I tried to turn my computer back on.

I was greeted with a black screen that insisted that I had a media failure.

Apparently, I killed my hard drive with whatever I had done.

Back to the Store I Went

After trying to insert the USB stick for Windows 10 and getting into my BIOS file and doing everything possible to get my hard drive to function, I went back to Office Depot and explained my dilemma. The technician listened to what I had to say. He tried a few things and finally, after a good forty five minutes, he gave up.

He went over my options. I really didn't want to purchase a whole new computer again. My Toshiba is a wonderful machine. He said that perhaps I should just install a new Hard drive and since I already had purchased Win 10 and Office 365 that I could just install the software that I already owned onto a new hard drive.

That made sense to me. He said that I could either purchase the hard drive from them and have him install it, or I could get a techie friend and have them install it for me.

I thought that I could probably do it myself. And, he admitted, that that was okay. That if I ran into something I couldn't handle, he could just 'take it from where I left off' and everything would be okay.

I bought the hard drive and took it home.

I Started my New Project

Took the battery off of my laptop and set it aside. Took a screwdriver and loosened the screw holding the back of the computer door in place.

There is one screw on mine that doesn't come out but holds the back in place. There are elbow clips that hold the back on in several places. It takes a sideways motion to remove the back, but I managed.

Then. There was one screw holding the hard drive plate in place. I removed that. I have a small magnet that I use to hold the little metal screws as I work. Then, there were four screws holding the hard drive down. I removed them and slid the hard drive sideways. It is plugged in and the pins are in contact with the holes in my laptop.

Then, hard drive removed, I had to remove the four screws holding the hard drive plate to the hard drive. Noting the position of the original hard drives pins, I removed the four screws and then, placed the new hard drive in the same position. I then, put the four screws back in the sides and then, with a sideways motion, installed the new hard drive. Then, replaced the four screws holding the plate down and replaced the one large screw holding it in place on the end.

All done. Then. I put the battery back onto the laptop.

Yes - I Had to Reinstall Windws

I plugged the laptop in, put the USB stick back in and when it asked me about the stick, I had to change the input to booting with the USB stick.

Apparently, it needs to boot and then, needs to install the contents of the USB stick onto your new hard drive.

There is nothing more gratifying than seeing all the pieces and stems restoring themselves in front of your eyes.

Buyers Need to be Willing to Buy

I think that this is the bottom line.

Your buyer needs to be desperate for your product. That any price that you could name would be the answer to their prayers and questions.

Your product needs to provide guaranteed relief to their ravaged brain.

I Learned Something That Day

As I waited for the technician to delve into all the possibilities with my computer, I was watching the customers coming in and out of the store.

They were coming in with intent to buy.

And buy they did. One left with printer ink. Another brought a printer in and asked if they would dispose of it for them.They even thanked them for throwing it away for them.

Another came in and purchased a filing cabinet and a rolling chair.

They were all happy to stand in line and get their stuff. They all needed different items, but they were satisfied with their purchases and they were going to come back at a future date and get more stuff.

Customer Service is a beautiful thing when it works properly.

I will be back for future purchases. They weren't successful with my particular machine, but I still have the machine and yes, it works great with the new hard drive.

I Need my Computer to Buy and Sell

I was very willing to invest time and money in my old computer. Toshiba is a good brand and it works well. It's a little dusty today, but I can dust it off. It works pretty good with its new hard drive. It was worth the money to purchase it.

My life stood still in the interim of not having a functioning computer. I couldn't access my files. I couldn't write more pages like this. I was stuck.

Best Things to Sell on eBay

You See

There are different types of products that use different things.

If you purchase a printer or scanner or all in one, you have choices. You can choose to purchase a simple printer. Or you can get a printer that also scans.

The printer inks are specific to your particular unit. That's where eBay can help you out. There are many people who sell printer ink that will help you out. Your number. Your color. Your black.

eBay is good for things like that.

A Puzzle

Once I sold a puzzle on eBay. It was a picture, I believe 500 pieces. It was of a motorcycle. The picture was beautiful.

Granted. I bought it from Wal-mart and I didn't pay a lot for the puzzle. I managed to get a few people to bid on it and I ended up shipping it over seas to my new buyer. I remarked to a friend the other day that the puzzle was probably available at their local Walmart, but my friend disagreed She said that I saved that buyer time by having that particular puzzle for sale on eBay.

Something to consider. I met a need. I filled it. I shipped it out. Two people happy.
