Support Our Troops-Put your expired coupons to work!

Updated on June 19, 2013

Frugal Living and Doing Good!

If you are an extreme coupon-er or even just an armature coupon junkie, you will no doubt have a stash of unused and expired manufacturers coupons. This doesn't necessarily mean that we failed, it may mean that we were smart shoppers! We didn't let the coupon urge us to spend more on a non-sale item just to get the rush of using it. Every so often, we clear out our coupon hoard by tossing these unused manufacturers coupons in the trash and typically we will sulk about the money that we didn't save or the products that are not sitting in our cupboards. Want to feel good about your next coupon clear out? Consider sending them to our military families serving abroad --Even if they are up to 6 months expired!

Many times when shopping abroad, our military families find the American Dollar isn't worth as much as it is here in the states. Often, these overseas families don't have the access to our newspapers, magazines, and other printed materials to get the coupons that we take for granted. There are usually only 2 main stores on military bases: the Commissary (similar to our grocery stores) and the Exchange (similar to our Walmart or Target stores). Both will accept coupons up to 6 months past the printed expiration date! That's why there are many organizations set up to help these families stretch their dollars by sending our unused manufacturers coupons to the military families who need them. While there are many organizations who do this (if you live near a base you can always check with them to see who they suggest) I will list a few that I have found as a starting point!

Check out Troopons - http://www.supportourtroops.org

The website will provide additional details on the coupons for troops program as well as shipping details.

The coupons can not be internet coupons but any other manufacturers coupons will work. These must be clipped and sorted into plastic baggies. Here are the addresses that they provide.
Just mail them the cheapest way you can to:
Send active coupons to:
(at least 3 months remaining)
Attn: ACTIVE Troopons
Support Our Troops®
P.O. Box 10
Wier, TX 78674-0010

Send expired coupons to:
(no more than 60 days expired)
(if less than 3 months remaining, send here)
Attn:
EXPIRED Troopons

P.O. Box 10
Wier, TX 78674-0010

This website allows you to support an individual family. It works kind of like a sponsorship program. You will need to contact them through the website to get additional information and sign up either as a recipient of the coupons or a donator!

Here are some of their rules..

Our military families stationed overseas CAN use the following types of coupons:

  • Coupons that state that they are manufacturer’s coupons.
  • Catalina coupons for $$$ a specific product that is also a manufacturer’s coupon (for example $1.00 off 1 package of Kraft cheese or 35¢ off Dannon yogurt)
  • Coupons from all sources provided they are manufacturer’s coupons (Insert coupons, tearpads, printable coupons, booklet coupons, peelies, winetags, etc)

Our military families stationed overseas CANNOT use the following types of coupons:

  • Store specific coupons (for example: Walgreens, Target, Publix, etc)
  • Restaurant coupons (for example: Olive Garden, Pizza Hut, Dominoes, Red Lobster, etc)
  • Local coupons (for example the local dry cleaner!)

Many of these adopted families have a system in place to share the manufacturers coupons that they couldn't use with other military families. They participate in coupon swaps, groups, and even sometimes will tape the coupons onto the items in the commissary so your contribution will go a LONG way!

As I said earlier, there are many groups and organizations that will help distribute your unused manufacturers coupons to military families stationed all over the world. Don't let these coupons to waste! These families really do need the extra savings while serving our country abroad and we certainly have the extra coupons to spare. It is one way that an extreme couponer's "clipping time" can do some good.

If you know of other groups who accept these coupons for distribution, please share them in the comments so we can get these coupons to those who need them and can use them!

Thanks for posting this! As a military wife stationed overseas, I can't tell you how much coupons mailed from the states saves us every month! It's because of people like you we are able to make it - we don't have the option to buy generic brands to save money, or to shop around to get the best price. We have one store, only a couple of brand options and the coupons sent to us make all the difference in our lives. Thank you!

I had no clue either! I can't count the number of coupons that I have tossed. Thanks for sharing the information!

I am amazed at how you find out about these things. Information like this doesn't appear to be mainstream...either that, or I don't get around much (probably the latter). : ) Anyway, I have a sister on the Big Island who has recently become a coupon fiend. She'll be happy to receive this hub via email, and that can only help your HP effort as well. Thanks for sharing! Have a terrific day!
