Surviving A Global Depression – Preparing For The Medium Scenario: Dow at 2,000

Updated on January 25, 2009

This is a far more severe scenario than the Low Severity. While during that scenario we were expecting that the electricity and gas might go out, now we are counting on it. We also didn’t overly consider personal safety during the Low scenario, but now we must.

During a Medium Severity scenario the choice of location becomes more critical. The preferred places are extremely isolated, preferably on their own dirt road. You can cut down a tree and let it fall across the entrance to the road to discourage wanderers.

Note that a Medium scenario can last six to eight years, so you can just take all the supplies that were mentioned for the Low Severity scenario and still be forced to come up with an ongoing process to obtain provisions. Furthermore, water supplies cannot be trusted, so having all your own water is obligatory. The same with the food storage. It is an enormous amount of stuff and completely beyond imagining.

You will definitely need fuel for cooking and staying warm. I don’t advise storing that much liquid fuel, as it is far too much of a fire risk. You will have to ensure that there is plenty of dry or dryable hardwood in the immediate area and that you can get to it.

The attitude of the people with you is critical as well. Six to eight years is an astounding amount of time to be spent cooped up with difficult or cranky people. You will all have to be dedicated to your ongoing safety and be able to get along over the long haul.

Ensure that all the bills for the house and anything else you can think of are paid well in advance so no one will have reason to come over. Think of everything possible to have your location disappear from public perception.

Now comes the tough part, and the one where I’ll be in disagreement with most of my readers. I’m sorry, but you will need to take whatever steps necessary to protect yourself and your loved ones. A Medium scenario can escalate to a High depression very quickly and, in that case, law and order may disappear within days. If a group of thug raiders wants your stash the only thing between them and your survival may be your courage and how well-prepared you are. Therefore, you may well be forced to obtain a firearm, a large cache of ammunition, and be well skilled in using it.

If you're a businessperson and you're expecting to keep your business alive and functioning during a Medium scenario, then I wish you the best of luck. If you're a very small, local business which provides an absolute staple and you can maintain such a phenomenal relationship with the community that they will actually protect you if you're attacked, then you might make it. If you're in the corporate world... you might as well just close up shop and try to find something else to do with your life. After all, there is more to life than being in business, and a global depression might be just the time to realize that.

I pray that the day never comes when we have to take these types of actions. But I have to admit that it's really not looking too bright out there. We could very much be on the edge of the precipice.

Interesting read, however all these doomsday posts are quite disturbing. Thanks for posting though.

Any scarier than yesterday's nearly 400 point drop in the Dow? We're getting closer to that magical 6500 point of no return! Yikes! Heaven help us! :(

We can only pray that this will never happen (again) but I have to be honest and state that every single indicator I'm following is pointing down down down with no end in sight. This upcoming week will be particularly interesting as a whole whack of corporate reports are due and they are almost universally expected to be a total disaster. This next week could be a very important milestone from a future historian's standpoint.

Hal, you paint a depressing picture here. I'm hoping things don't get quite that desparate, but I'm prepared to believe that things will not be too rosy for the next few years.

I definitely agree, (although a Dow at 100 is almost inconceivable) but this is a Medium scenario as the High assumes that the global stock markets have closed outright and we're back trading potatoes for squirrels! I guess I should try to develop some squirrel recipes! :)

I enjoy reading your series Hal :)

Have to disagree on the Dow value though - technically 700-1000 looks like a probable target for the bottom, and if not then down to around 100...
