The 2 of the Best Ways to Earn Passive Income Online

Updated on May 8, 2014

Work Once to Reap Benefits Over and Over Again

Passive income online is great because it allows you to earn money literally for years or forever from your initial investments in efforts, time, and money on a venture. In today's unstable economy, creating a couple of or more passive income streams will allow you to reap benefits or rewards in the long run. Passive income is a recurring income from work done once and then it perpetuates itself.

There are many ways to generate passive income online, but a few of these can really bring in decent streams of passive income to your home. Here are the 2 best ways to earn passive income online.

Make Money Blogging

Blogging or Creating a Website

It might not be for everyone, but if done correctly then a blog or website can be the best source of generating passive income for year after year, as long as the blog or website remains active online. It is incredibly easy to set up a blog or create a website nowadays, but running and maintaining them is entirely another story.

Ways to Make Passive Income from a Blog or Website

The key to succeeding in making money with your blog or website is to write unique, high quality and helpful content for your targeted audience or blog or website visitors. By creating useful and informative blog posts or articles you will be able to gain a large following and wider audience. You can monetise the blog or website using various methods once your blog or website gains a lot of traffic consistently. Here are a few blog or website monetisation methods to earn a passive income from your blog or website:

  • Running online ads, such as Google AdSense
  • Joining affiliate programmes, such as Amazon Associates Programme
  • Creating and selling eBooks
  • Setting up a premium section on your blog or website for a recurring monthly or yearly fee to access your content

Remember though that it will take a significant amount of time, usually six months to a year or more, depending on the work and time put in by you, before you could see any significant amount of passing income coming in to your pocket. But once you have done the work, you will reap the rewards over and over again in the form of passive income.

For example, you will be making money every time a sale is made from the affiliate links placed on your blog, or when any visitor clicks on an ad displayed on the blog or website. Your blog or website needs to be well-designed, SEO friendly, and filled with rich content if you want to generate a passive income from them.

Write for Revenue Sharing Writing Websites

There is money to be made from reputable revenue sharing websites, in the form of passive and residual income. Writing for these websites is not a get-rich-quick scheme. You will not make a living out of it unless you have hundreds or thousands of published work with one or more revenue sharing writing websites. But, it is possible to earn some nice side income comfortably every month provided that you have done the right work to earn passive income recurrently.

You will earn over and over again, i.e, passive income, from your articles published on these revenue sharing writing websites. Your articles will earn revenue usually the following two ways:

  • Page views or page impressions when visitors or readers come across your articles
  • Ad clicks generated by visitors or readers when they click on the ads displayed on the web pages where your articles are located on
  • Affiliate sales

You will earn a certain portion of revenue earned on your article while these sites will keep the rest. I have earned little money so far here and there with this online passive income method. It will take a lot of work, dedication and determination to be able to earn something that will supplement a regular income, depending on where you live in.

Many online freelance writers who are making $US500 per month might make a living out of it, depending on the cost of living in their countries. In general, to earn that amount of money, you will need to submit a large body of work to one or more revenue sharing writing websites and wait a few months or a year or even more to see the money tickling in.

Patience and Hard Work is key to Earning a Passive Income Online

There are no shortcuts to success, whether online or offline. The same truth applies to passive income ideas. If you invest the right amount of time, effort, and money if required, you will set yourself up for this passive income route. Always keep your audience or readers in your mind while you write. Give them solutions to problems, provide information they are looking for, and above all, be honest with them when sharing information with them. Passive income will not happen overnight. If you do the hard work, it will give you the dividends itself.

There are lots of ways to earn passive income, both online (article writing, etc.) and offline (rental property, vending machines, etc.). After doing this for a while, I'd probably advise people to start off with the sure thing - investing for dividend income. There are tons of companies out there that having been paying - and raising - their dividends for 25 to 50 years or more.

Hello CyberShelly, thanks very much for the comment. I am glad that you found the hub helpful. US$500 per month is a great and realistic target and it is possible to achieve that goal by using one of the above or using a combination of both methods.

It does take time to build a passive income stream. It will not happen overnight, but it will happen. Writing 100 great hubs can be enough to reach that milestone provided that you also get a lot of traffic to the hubs. Great content will do the SEO work itself.

I think if a writer can publsih a couple of hundred high-quality hubs on HubPages, it is quite possible to make several hundred US$s every month with those hubs. If these articles continue to earn money for another 5 or 10 years, things would go just better and better, I suppose.
