The Benefits of Carpooling

Updated on July 24, 2015

Nowadays, gas prices are strangling us and there are hardly any ways to save money anymore. The prices for rent, gas, electricity, water and insurances are usually fixed. However, there are many way to save money on food, leisure activities and transport, as these expenses are flexible and can be reduced if we make the right choices.

1 Lower Travel Costs

Transport prices can make a huge difference when we carpool. In general, drivers can define the price that each passenger needs to pay. Passengers have the advantage that they can compare carpooling prices and choose the most convenient one. Now that we can use the internet as a tool to find drivers as well as passengers, carpooling has become easier than ever before. There are multiple websites where passengers can post requests and drivers can offer a ride for one or more passengers, depending on the size of the car. Some of the most popular websites are: ZimRide, RideJoy, Carma, Nuride, RideShare, eRideShare. Many partners in long-distance relationships who live in different cities or even different countries use carpooling to see their partner more frequently due to reduced travel costs.

2 Eco-friendly Transport

Carpooling helps reduce carbon emissions, gets cars off the streets and reduces the need for additional parking spaces. If everyone joined a carpool, we could get millions of cars off the streets and reduce our carbon footprint significantly. Carpooling is one of the easiest ways to make an eco-friendly contribution.

3 Easy to Connect with Drivers and/or Passengers

With smart phones, carpooling is easier and more flexible than ever. You can find a driver or passenger in the last minute and even travel spontaneously. Many websites allow you to send text messages or call drivers/passengers directly, after you have registered successfully.

4 Make new friends!

Carpooling is a great way to make new friends. Sitting in the same car for hours can be very entertaining and the trip will go by much faster when you can talk to someone. Of course, this is a matter of luck. You will most likely not make friends with all of your drivers/passengers but there are always people now and then which whom you can have great conversations. Some carpooling websites even allow you to see the profile of the driver/passenger. This means you can choose the driver/passenger depending on his/her interests.

5 Visit Various Countries in Europe

Carpooling is a great way to find rides to popular European cities without having to pay expensive trains or rent a car, which is much more expensive. You can also lower the risk that is involved when you drive on European streets, where traffic rules are different. If you want to carpool in Europe, you can visit Carpooling.com, a German startup which helps connect people in over 40 countries and is available in English, French, German, Greek, Italian, Polish and Spanish.

Glad you liked the ideas and thanks for reading :)! I have carpooled a couple of times in Germany and once from Germany to France and I must say my experiences were always positive.

Good car pooling ideas. I especially like the one about finding rides in European cities.
