Ways to make extra cash

Updated on January 5, 2012

Write a book

If you love to write this is a great way to make some money. Thanks to the likes of Kindle, Barnes and noble and Smashwords, it is now possible to publish your work and sell it. You could publish short stories and sell them for 99c and then when you have about five stories bundle them up into one volume and sell it for $2.99. This won’t make you money instantly but you will slowly build an audience and the more books you have the better.

Sell on eBay

There was a time my extra money came from eBay. When I was married there was a joint income. But after the separation and then the divorce my income had to carry everything. I had to find extra ways to make money and eBay did that for me. This is what I did. I started selling things around the house that I didn’t need, then I cleared out the shed. This brought in quite a bit of money. Once you get a feel for selling on eBay you can then move onto different things.

When there was nothing in the house that could be sold anymore I started looking on eBay itself. There was a time I sold mobile phone accessories. I would look under the wholesale link and look for mobile accessories and scan for what was hot. By hot I mean items that had quite a few bids. With a budget in place I would set the maximum I would pay and bid on the items. If someone else bid my bid would automatically bid again. Once I bided on a box of mobile batteries and mobile cases and got the whole joblot for £25. There were over a hundred batteries and mobile cover cases. I could’ve sold them individually for a pound each and made a good profit, but instead I sold the batteries separately for £52 and the accessories for £20 and made a profit of £47.

This just encouraged me to try a few more things and it worked out really well. You can find bargain items on eBay itself and resell. The way to do that is to try websites like barginchecker.com to find items that have been spelt incorrectly. An item that hasn’t been spelt right doesn’t show up on a normal search. A few people find bargains this way. If you’re persistent you’ll find bargain items for less because no one else has found them.

Rent out a room

Do you have a big house with a spare room? Dependent on how you feel about sharing your space this could be a great way to earn extra cash. Find a tenant that’s more or less like you, i.e. your age group, gender and hopefully same interests. That way you won’t get upset when the person always stumbles into the house after hours.

Become a mystery shopper

This involves going to shops, restaurants, pharmacies etc to report on customer services and products. You sign up with a reputable agent who will then send you potential jobs. You are regarded as self employed and do not work for the agency.

How does it work?

A job could ask that you visit a specified pharmacy to buy a packet of painkillers and ask or query something about something else. In the job description it will explain how much you will get paid and they will ask you to keep the receipts to claim back the amount you spent. You’ll then pay for the items and take note of the service and how they responded to your enquiry. You will then need to write out a report about your experience. It has to be quite detailed, describing how you were treated, what was said and how the transaction was handled. You then submit the report and receive payment. The nice thing about this is sometimes you could get free meals, drinks and other items, as you get to keep the things you purchase.

Carboot sale

A carboot sale is a good way to get rid of items you don’t need anymore. It’s also a great way to de-cluter your house, get rid of small bikes and toys. It’s another way to make a little extra cash. You’ll be surprised by how much money could be sitting in your garage. To do a car boot sale you must wake up very early to be able to get a good spot. You will have to pay for the spot when you enter the grounds of the carboot. It’s a good idea to go with someone else so that you’re able to take a walk around the carboot sale yourself. This is another way to pick up rare items that you could sell on eBay.

Be an Extra

You could star in an advert, be an extra in a movie, the sky is the limit. Being an extra can be hard work with early morning starts, working late nights. The weather may also be terrible. There is a website I used called Starnow that advertises the latest available castings. There is a joining fee to view the adverts. You should also build your portfolio so that advertisers can find you and contact you if you are interested. You could also join modelling agencies that do castings for all types of modelling and acting, ad and catalogue work. They don’t ask for a joining fee but you might have to spend money to create a portfolio. It’s up to you how far you want to take it. When you do get jobs you’ll be glad as it does pay some good money.

There are so many ways you can make extra cash; all you need to do is find the thing that suits you and take it from there. Try new and different things and see how they work.

Loved this Hub and your suggestions. I've done some eBay in the past and flea markets/garage sales/estate sales, etc. and the money is good -- just need to be ready for lots of hard work. Good information and excellent presentation. Voted UP! Best, Sis
