Answers about dental plans from an agent

Updated on May 8, 2018

Why is there a waiting period for crowns?

Think about it. If you were an insurance company, this is how it would work if there were not waiting period. Customer signs up and pays one premium ($8 to $80). Then customer goes and has three crowns put in for a cost of $3000. If you were the insurance company and you only received even $80 how can you pay out $2920 more than you received? Even if the insurance company has a lot of customers the insurance company would go out of business pretty fast.

Why isn't my dentist on the list?

One reason could be that he/she does not know they could sign up to be a provider. If you want them to consider being on the list you need to suggest it to them and the name of the plan.

Another reason could be that your dentist does not want to accept the fee arrangement offered by the insurance company. Delta Dental is a dental plan in California. Delta Dental offers a variety of different plans. Some plans are PPO and some are not. The more expensive plans tend to have a longer list of dentists. If you are willing to go with a smaller list of dentists (often with a PPO) your premium could be lower. But the trade off may be that your dentist is not on the list. Keep in mind most dental schools are competitive and the students they graduate are highly trained and intelligent. So many times technique and personality are what people look for in a dentist.

Can the dentist give me financing for my dental work?

How many times have I heard this one. I met someone who needed 3 crowns costing around $3000 for this dental work. (according to the dentist she visited) To pay for this work she was willing to spend over $10000 over 3 years to finance this work. She was wanting to go to the dentist simply because he/she offered financing. I suggested instead that she find a dentist where she could have one crown done at a time and pay $1000 a time for one crown at a time. This method would save her around $7000. Hello!?

So how about some suggestions about the best dental plan?

The best dental plan depends on you. How many dentists are in the area and on the plan where you live? There are no deals and no ideal dental plan. You get what you pay for. There are super cheap dental HMOS out there. However if you need a crown you may need to "do things their way." In other words if you need a crown, you won't get a gold crown; you might get a porcelain crown or even a pulled tooth!

Where can I get a dental plan that pays for all my crowns and bridges?

You can't and you won't. Not going to happen. And there will be a waiting period for either/both. This is an area where it pays to shop. I had one lady who went to several dentists for estimates. She got prices and treatments ranging from $3000 to $15000.

So where can I find a good dental plan?

Ask your dentist which plans they except.
