I think everyone these days is trying to cut back on their outgoings and find a way to make their money stretch a little further. The recession has hit most people across the world so we are all in a similar boat at the moment. Saving money on the family budget is the place most people will need to start - and its the place where most money can often be saved. read more

in our house, we depend mainly on my husband's income which is VA and Social Security payments. I use his income to pay all the bills at the beginning of the month and then use my income to pay for groceries, gas for the vehicles that we have, and the babysitter for our son. Within the last year, i started couponing and that has helped alot with curbing the budget. we also recycle aluminum cans and tin.

I am a stay-at-home Mom of a preschooler and a Kindergartner.  I save a lot of money by making a budget, using coupons for everything, utilizing free local activities and making homemade food.  I have a few Hubs that cover this topic:

A budget should make sense for the person using it, so knowledge is power.  For me, tracking expenses (on a simple Excel spreadsheet) while trying to live frugally is the best way for me to see where my weaknesses lie and then work on those areas.  For example, I haven't spent a dime on Health and Beauty Aids all month, but have spent too much on coffee lattes - so this needs to be adjusted.  Here is my contribution to the topic, How to Budget and Save Money:

I have to say, this is the first time in my life that I feel in control of my money smile)

I agree.  If you don't know where your money goes each month, you don't know where to cut back.

Discuss the need of your purchases with your significant other. Before shopping make a list and stick to it. Remember, big box stores make their money on inpulse buying. And yes, most of us are impulse buyers. The big box stores are displayed in such a way to entice you to spend money. The average consumer, when shopping in these stores, spend $70.00 a trip on "stuff they don't need!" So don't get caught up in the trap. If you need milk, buy milk! Don't be tempted by that "Stuff" you pass along the way to get to the milk aisle! Good luck!
