John T has the best way to figure it out in your head. By the way your commas are either in the wrong spot, or you didn't put enough zeros. Other ways to find 5 percent of that number (n) would be:

n x .05 = 143,500

or

n / 20 = 143,500

The simple proportion 5/100 = x/2870 will work for any similar problem. 100x = 14,350. x = 143.50.

Another way of figuring out the answer is imagining what 1% of 100 might be (1); thus 5% of 100 is 5 and simply multiply by 28.7 to obtain 143.50.

Well you could use a calculator, but if you want to work it out manually you could take 10% of the number and divide it by 2. 10% is an easy number to use because you just drop a digit

10% of 2,870,000 is 287,000

Divide that number by 2 gives you 143,500

Think of 5% of $1.00, which is a nickel, or 1/20th. And 5% of anything will always be 1/20th of that anything. So simply knock a zero off the right end your large number; that's just like dividing by ten. Then split the remaining number in half, and that's 1/20th — your answer.

Example: 2,870,000 loses its final zero, becoming 287,000. Then 287,000 split in half becomes 143,500. Bingo! 143,500 is 1/20th (or 5%) of 2,870,000.

Try it in your calculator so you can check the answer. Always remember that when you are given this figure, for example 5%, you need to remove the % sign, add one zero to the left and add a decimal point thus: .05.

If you are asked for 10%, remove the % sign and then just add a decimal point before the number 1, to signify that it's just a percentage of the whole.
