I know where you are coming from. Both my husband and I are currently unemployed and have two children, also one car. I would say take on odd jobs if your kids are in school. If not, looking for a job where you can work from home is ideal but not the easiest to find. Personally, I started selling Mary Kay last year and it has helped many times. It gives me extra income for groceries and gas money. I don't put near as much energy into it as I could so I'm sure you could make more if one wanted.
Of course the other way is to ask a friend or relative for a loan. Other than a loan, I would say try and find an odd job.
The government doesn't seem to be much help unless you are so poor that you are practically living in your car. You may have better luck though. I really do wish you the best of luck.
