Avoid Junk Food in College and Save Money and Health

Junk food is cheap to buy and fast to eat. These are the only characteristics for which we love to eat them. As we have developed habit of eating junk food we have started liking their taste too. Otherwise think about the taste of a hamburger, sausages, pizza and boiled pasta, they do not have great taste in reality. Teenagers are more prone to eating junk food while some adults too love them

We all are aware of the negative effects of junk food on our health but we close our eyes and forget what we know about them and just eat them as it is an addiction which we cannot leave. The so-called pizzas, hamburgers and salads sold in fast food restaurant contain processed meat, sausages, cheese and creams. It is a known fact today that processed meat is most dangerous food item and it can cause several diseases like cancer. Processing itself is dangerous for food. There are hundreds of reasons one should avoid eating junk food.

Many colleges and schools have already stopped the distribution of junk food in their cafeterias but still in many other colleges fast food is sold without testing the standard of manufacturing and the nutritional benefits they provide. College students spend more than 1/3rd of their money on these fast food. Every free time is spent in either college cafeteria or hanging out at the favorite fast food spot with friends.

For once think about the benefits we are getting from eating fast food and the dangers associated with its consumption and you will be stirred. Parents should at least educate their children about their drawbacks on health and should not encourage their child eating these food.

As a college student you need to stay fit and healthy to actively participate in the learning process. During exams, peak study days and social activities students forget to eat healthy and they prefer to eat what could be eaten fast and is in vogue among friends too - of course the junk food. This junk food is dangerous for health as well as for wealth. There are certain common misconceptions associated with junk food as a student and as an educated person you should know about these misconceptions and the reality associated with them.

No more than just Misconceptions:

Misconception # 1: Junk food is cheap

Is it really! As a teen we love to eat junk food as a part of our daily routine but junk food contains nothing but several hundred calories, artificial food colors, chemicals in the form of additives (many of these additives are already banned for use in food items but still many companies are using them) and cheap quality oils that have been smoked so many times that they have lost their qualities and become dangerous for health. Still can you say with confidence that junk food is cheap! Junk food is increasing the risks of cancer, coronary diseases, diabetes and liver problems in consumers. Junk food is never cheap but you eat it at the expense of your life. Please think about it.

Misconception # 2: Junk food is in vogue

Believe it or not people are changing their eating preferences and even many teenagers do not eat junk food anymore because they have awareness about the negative effects and do not want to put themselves in any risk. One of my student knew more than what I knew about the risks involved with eating junk food. I always enjoyed her company because she told me about so many new researches that prove their negative effects on health. Junk food is one of the major cause of obesity in Americans and they are now trying to decrease the use of junk food to restore health.

Misconception # 3: Junk food does not cause any long-term harm to health

If you also think this way than you are having worst misconception. Junk food mostly does not show results in the present but in the longer run it can cause health problems that can not be underestimated. In one of the study regarding Healthy eating, activity and obesity prevention in Australia it has been found that children are becoming obese at faster rates and the major reasons to be blamed are lack of physical activity and use of unhealthy calorie rich food. 

Misconception # 4: Junk food derived from healthy food is healthy

In the similar study mentioned above it was found that parents and their children believe that junk food that has been derived from some healthy food is healthy as the raw products were healthy. This is totally untrue the processing and other addition of additives changes the whole qualities of food. While eating an apple a day is one of the most healthy eating habit but drinking a can of apple flavored cola drink daily can cause hundred of diseases. Eating meat cooked at home is healthy but eating sausages and hamburgers is not.

Misconception # 5: Junk food effects can be neutralized by eating healthy food along with it

What if I say the opposite is true! For example if you drink a can of cola drink and eat some healthy food along with it the cola drink will negatively effect the healthy food too and you will not get the most benefits from the healthy food at the same time getting excessive calories and other negative impacts of cola drinks too.

10 Easy Ways to Avoid Junk Food in College

  1. Bring your home-made lunch to college. Don't worry about what people will say, think about what junk food will do to your health. Once you will start eating healthy food in college you will feel yourself healthy and active.
  2. Spend your free time in library in reading one of your favorite book or making notes for the coming exams.
  3. Keep some dry fruit in your bag and whenever you feel like hungry, crack some almonds or pistachios and you will feel full and active too. This is one of the most healthy practice as nuts are full of minerals, protein and other nutrients. Antioxidants are also rich in nuts. If you do not want to crack them in college or feel embarrassed, crack some at home and keep them in a small box in your bag.
  4. Read bout the negative effects of junk food on internet and in books and you will get awareness about the negative effects and will not try them any more.
  5. Make it clear in your mind that junk food is made to tempt the people. If you get tempted you will develop an addiction that will be very difficult to change.
  6. Do not skip breakfast as breakfast is the most important meal of the day and if you do not take breakfast you will be forced to eat junk food in college.
  7. If you can not avoid eating in cafeteria and restaurants than check out healthy meal there. Most of the restaurants today have healthy meal along with junk food.
  8. Another way to fight with your desire of eat junk food is to make a plan for your diet. This will reduce chances of eating unhealthy food. 
  9. Prepare your food for college at night so that if you do not have enough time in the morning you can still have something to take to the college. 
  10. If you are too much into eating snacks then its better to take heavy meals in breakfast, lunch and super so as to reduce hunger during daytime.

      your suggestions do sound helpful, and i wouldn't say i didn't try part of them but the problem is i wake up at 3am in the morning and come home at 8-9 everyday so i barely have time to take a cold shower, and whenever i eat heavy food especially at night i end up feeling up easy and incapable of studying. My eyes also seem to suffer from the whole situation so i guess i have to stop bugging you and start bugging my doctor :D

      I really appreciate your comments and will try them, right now my music is the only thing keeping me awake here :D

      Uriel there can be numerous ways to keep yourself awaken late in night, caffeine is not the only resort. There are food that keep you awaken, be thoughtful about the type of food you eat in dinner and also look at your physical activities in the day. When you work straneously through out the day you tend to sleep readily in night, so during exam days do not indulge in heavy exercises, keep it simple. Eating heavy food in night might help you keep awaken for long.

      You should also keep bright lights on to stay awaken and take nap in afternoon to avoid night sleep, a cold shower may also work.

      gulnazahmad, yeh that is right, we sometimes disregard the fact that eating junk food regularly has several ripples on our health in the short and long run. I think the best subsitutes can be healthy food and juice. Honestly speaking, i find it hard to stop drinking coffee especially during my exams, so do you have anything in mind as a replacement other than juice and water that will keep me awake and functioning during exam periods without having counter effects [energy drinks are not on my list :D]?
