How to Prepare Home-made Personal Hygiene Products

Updated on February 28, 2011

Personal hygiene products are usually very expensive. One can not sacrifice on a cheap brand because risk is always involved, therefore we spend a large part of our earnings on purchasing these products. On the other hand we also spend our income on salon visits, which are also costly.

If you wish to live frugal life you should prefer to make home made products that are inexpensive and useful too. Making home made beauty products is not as difficult as it sounds you just need some essential raw products that are almost available in every home. Here are some simple recipes to make home made personal hygiene products.

Facial Scrub are an important part of face cleansing. Beauty shops are full of variety of facial scrubs. If you have observed all of them claim to be made of some fruit. There are other ingredients but fruit is the main ingredient. Why not make one at home with similar ingredients but with less side effects and cost.

For oily skin: facial scrubs should have less oily ingredients and more ingredients which can absorb facial oils.

1 tbsp gram flour

4 tbsp milk

1 tsp honey

1/4 tsp poppy seeds

should be mixed together in a pan and applied with soft hands to the skin. If there are pimples or acne do not rub harshly rather softly message against skin. A banana can be added optionally if available. If the mixture seems thick add more milk as scrub should not be applied in hard form.

For dry/sensitive skin: scrub should have more moisturizing effect. It should have ingredients which do not cause skin allergies or irritation. Again do not rub harshly; lightly message it.

4tbsp milk

1tbsp fresh full cream

1 banana

1 tsp honey

1/4tsp poppy seeds

do not add gram flour because it tends to absorb skin oils. By adding cream in this scrub dry skin will gain some moisture and oil.

Hair Conditioner range from lemon juice for oily hair to rosewater for dry hair and egg yolk for very dry hair.

Foot soak help in softening foot skin and bring moisture. It also heals any pain or lethargy.

Lukewarm water

2 tbsp salt

4 tbsp glycerin

1/4th cup rosewater

mix these ingredients and soak feet in it for 1/2 an hour. Wash feet with clean water and apply moisturizer.

Foot Scrub are the easiest one to make at home and homemade foot scrubs are very effective as compared to commercial foot scrubs.

2 tbsp sugar

1 tbsp honey

1 lemon

4 tbsp milk

this scrub is useful for any skin type and is very effective in getting rid of spots or skin tanning. Mix all of the ingredients and rub it against the skin for 10-15 minutes. After which soak feet in lukewarm water. Do not forget to apply foot cream after washing feet.

Hand Scrub should be applied to hands on every other day. Hands are the most used part of our body. We do all chores with our hands and they are often neglected. Hands speak for our age so take care of your hands properly.

4tbsp milk

2 tbsp fresh cream

1 lemon juice

1 tbsp oatmeal

mix these ingredients and rub it on hands for at least 10-15 minutes. Clean hands with moist sponge or towel and then apply toner. Wash hands in the end and apply hand cream your hands will look soft and glowing.

Facial Cleansers should include only those ingredients which ahve normal or near to normal pH but if you have to add some ingredients like lemon juice etc then do add neutralising ingredients too so that the effect can be neutralized. Facial cleansers should be applied to the skin almost daily because we all go outside and face burning heat, dust and dirt.

For oily skin: facial cleansers are more important because due to more oils on face dirt and dust get accumulated and face look without any glow. Dead skin and dirt causes appearance of acne on face so facial cleansers help in getting rid of this oil and acne as well.

1/2 cup tomato juice/lemon juice

1 tbsp baking powder

the citrus effects of tomato or lemon juice will be neutralized with baking powder and both have the capacity to absorb skin oils. This is by far the best and easiest one homemade facial cleanser for oily skin.

For dry/sensitive skin: facial cleansers help in revitalizing moisture and essential oils. Cleansers should have to be mild in nature and pH.

1/4th cup milk

1 tsp fine grains sugar(or lightly ground)

mix a paste and apply on face and neck, clean any impurities and wash with water.

Facial Soaps can range from oil absorbing gram flour to dust removing lemon juices. It depends on the skin type. Most of the ingredients that can remove impurities are already part of every kitchen so its easy to find them.

For oily skin gram flour alone is the best soap. Just add some water in gram flour and apply on face, rub it lightly and wash with lukewarm water (if facial pores are open then wash with cold water).

For dry skin milk and lemon juice or milk and honey can also be good soap or cleanser.
