Microplace: Socially Responsible Investing through PayPal

With our latest inflation numbers at 1.13% annual rate1, I would like to share a website where you can stash some of your non-interest bearing cash and earn a rate that beats inflation and helps relieve worldwide poverty. The concept of Microplace is virtually unmatched by any other socially responsible website, and investments can be easily deposited through the widely used PayPal Inc. Microplace investments are not FDIC insured, but very very few loans ever default because your investment is spread across hundreds of different borrowers in the form of micro-loans.

A micro-loan is essentially a small short-term loan provided to a small entrepreneur in an underdeveloped nation2. The website allows you to search for investments by annual interest rate, term period, or world region. There are a number of investments that return over 3.5% annually thus beating inflation considerably. Microplace is truly unique in that it can be used to get a competitive return for your money in these challenging times of low bond interest rates while fighting global poverty. Micro-loans would improve the standard of living for the poorest 1 billion in our world by 50 percent if all the individuals in the affluent nations contributed just 1 percent of their income to micro-loans3.

It is completely free to join Microplace, and it is extremely easy to add or create a PayPal account to make your initial deposit. The investor has the freedom to choose the amount of the investment from as little as $20 to more than a $1000. I personally have contributed $140 and have received all of my interest payments exactly as scheduled. Microplace records exactly how many individuals you have helped, and you are provided with a prospectus of the bonds purchased and payment schedules to know when you will receive interest payments. I have helped 12 people to date, and I plan to continue to reinvest my $140 and interest so I can help more people. Microplace comes with an online community forum to ask any questions you may still have.

Microplace is Especially Benefical for HubPages Members

Lastly, I want to share why I think Microplace is a perfect investment website specifically for HubPages users that are a part of the Ad Program. The Ad Program requires a PayPal account for payment once your account reaches $50 of earnings, so this becomes a great way to sweep the cash that is returning 0 interest in PayPal into a temporary investment through Microplace that can return you about 3%! Microplace has investments that mature in under two months, so your cash wouldn't even be tied up for long depending on your preferences. Ultimately, you could help so many people with Microplace by reinvesting your Ad Program earnings into new Microplace investments month after month. Give it a try and I think you'll be pleasantly surprised with how easily Microplace works and how your investment truly does make a noticeable difference toward alleviating global poverty.

Update: Microplace Has Been Suspended

Unfortunately, Microplace has been suspended due to inadequate funding and a conflict with their partner, Paypal. I have found a similar website called Kiva.org that is very similar to Microplace except that the loans do not earn interest. It is simply a way to maximize a small investment such as $20. With $20, you can help multiple people as they repay the loans, and then the funds can be loaned again to another individual.

What is the likelihood that you will invest in a loan using Microplace?

This is very cool! I had heard of micro-loans before, and a bit about what they do to help encourage entrepreneurship and alleviate poverty, but never knew it was so easy for people to get involved.
