10 Most Popular Conspiracy Theories

Updated on September 28, 2012

The following 10 most popular conspiracy theories, in no particular order, stayed the distance over the years. From as far back as the UFO crash in Roswell in 1947 to the catastrophic 9/11 event - fact or fiction - you decide.

  1. Lee Harvey Oswald was not alone.

Lee was shot and killed two days after his arrest for assassinating Kennedy. Witnesses claimed they heard shots fired from a grassy mound near the motorcade – thus creating the mystery of another shooter . This popular conspiracy theory is still going strong after50 odd years.

2.Princess Diana’s accident was planned

A pregnant Diana was planning to become a Muslim then marry Dodi Al-Fayed when they both died in a horrendous accident. There are many conspiracy theories surrounding the so-called accident, including that the Royal family wanted her out of the way so that the British would support Prince Charles’ remarriage .

3.AIDS is created in a laboratory

The scientific community believes HIV originated from a strain of Simian immunodeficiency virus found in Western African monkeys. On the one hand Conspiracy Theorists believe that the virus was created by the Government to enforce population control. On the other hand they claim that the cure for AIDS is being held back to ensure the thinning out of racial minority groups and gay people.

4. 9/11 was a ‘Government’ Job

It is said that the government had prior knowledge that the attacks were going to happen, and did nothing to stop them . The fall of both towers resembled implosion by pre-planted explosions . Then the uncertainty around the crash into the Pentagon due to thelittle visual information . In 2004, Donald Rumsfeld said that “terrorists shot Flight 93down”. Oops. There were many unexplained concerns around this event, which lead to9/11 topping the list of popular conspiracy theories.

5.Elvis the Pelvis is still around

Elvis’ middle name, Aron (as on his birth certificate), is spelt Aaron on his gravestone. Elvis 'sightings ’ over the years have led people to aver that he is in Witness Protection because of his role in fighting drug abuse (refer his meeting with Nixon in1970).

6.1969 Apollo moon landing a fake

Although the faked moon landing theory has mostly been debunked there are still a few ardent followers out there. They cite altered pictures, missing design blueprints and faulty recordingsas evidence of the forgery. Winning the “space race” with the Soviet Unionand instill public faith in NASA the reason? From ‘faked’ shadows to a flag blowing in the‘wind’, who knows?

7.UFO with Aliens crashed in Roswell, New Mexico

Ranch manager Mac Brazel alerted local Authorities after coming across crash debris near his property in 1947. The same day, the Roswell Army Air Field sent out a press release that stated a “flying disk ” was found, but this statement was later retracted and the U.S. military told the public it was a fallen weather balloon. Some say there were alien bodies found at the crash site. Test dummies or aliens?

8.Global warming is a set-up

Are the beliefs held by Al Gore, as portrayed in his influential documentary film ... and those of many learned scientists a ploy by those who would like to keep the public in a state of panic to maintain control and decrease population, be the reason?

9.Shakespeare did not write all those plays

Was William Shakespeare just a pen name used by a collection of writers? This may explain why his signature varied throughout his career.

10.Reptilian humanoids control humankind

In David Icke’s book “The Biggest Secret: The Book That Will Change the World ” – he claims that the majority world leaders, including quite a few U.S. presidents, are actuallyshape-shifting reptilian beings from a different planet. The Illuminati, New World Orderand Freemasons have been getting a lot of press in recent years...

You read, You think, and You decide!

Great list! What about the Illuminati and New World Order conspiracy. People who believe in the other conspiracies usually connect them to some New World Order takeover plot.

GoGreenTips, the reptilian one is really crazy. Though you'd kind of think that if these shape-shifting reptilians were running the world, what's their end game. Having a bit of fun messing around with humanity?

Jonesy0311, very good insight on the JFK assassination. You obviously know your weapons and you have solid points there.

      Thanks for your comments.

Great list. Perhaps the most amazing are the JFK assassination and Roswell, NM since they have been around for several decades. I live in NM so the Roswell story has always interested me. To be honest, I am becoming more and more convinced that it was the crash of an experimental U.S. aircraft. This may also be the case for the Phoenix Lights.

As for JFK, it is pretty obvious that Oswald, if he was involved, was not alone. He was firing from some 250 feet away at a moving target. He got off 3 rounds in about 6 seconds with an old Italian bolt-action rifle. Bear in mind that this is not the type of rifle he trained with in the Marine Corps and that the firing rate alone would be exceedingly difficult for a marksman with his training. With that, he scored 2 hits including a head shot as the vehicle sped away. Conveniently, he was executed before trial...and his killer was murdered in prison. If there was no conspiracy, would it have gone any differently? I am a fan of Olcam's razor. Like 9/11, the official JFK story is far less likely than some of the conspiracies.

The strangest one I have heard of is the reptilians ruling the world. Crazy? But then it is pretty well been proven that the majority of not all of US Presidents are related i some way.
