Creativity and Innovation Virginia Circle__Building A Bridge to Future Magic Through Arts and Science

Updated on January 21, 2013

01. Definition:

Creativity: A useful definition of a creative product is that it is something (a) novel and (b) appropriate. This definition is given by two prominent academic psychologists, Robert R. Steinberg & Todd I.

Lubard in their classic book, Defying the Crowd: Cultivating Creativity in a Culture of Conformity (Free Press, 1995)

Innovation: "Innovation is the process of turning ideas into manufacturable and marketable forms" Watts Humprey

02. Philosophy:

"So, then, to every man his chance

to every man, his shining golden opportunity- to every man, the right to live, to work,

to be himself, and to become whatever thing his manhood and his vision

can combine to make him-this seeker, is the promise of America

Thomas Wolfe,

"You Can't Go Home Again"

03. Vision -- What is a system?

"A system is a network of independent components that work together to try to accomplish the aim of the system"

W. Edward Deming (Late)

TQM Expert & Professor of Management

04. Mission: Learn the art & science of innovation

. Start with a focus on self-examination, i.e., strengths. Use technical skills, knowledge, social capital, and wisdom of experience to engage in the practice of tech innovation.

Use our own skills, knowledge and motivation to practice creativity and link with others who compliments you to build trust, and support community spirit, individual and group based personal ethics.

We don't have to be a Ben Franklin or another "Great Mind" to profit from inspiring examples left behind. "Climb on Shoulders of Great Minds" as possible through cultivating our minds with knowledge, experience, and sharing.

05. Objectives: Define outcome of the innovation process desired . - as clearly as possible

Don't worry if the outcome is not perfectly clear as "pleasant surprises" are always welcome.

But also important is to be aware of "risks" to efforts and resources . "Smart Talk" is not enough. "Actionable Knowledge", often via wisdom of experience and small team are needed.

05. Success Models:

I have found "success models" inspiring and useful for "actionable knowledge" development process. Knowledge of individual innovators important to derive inspiration.

These individuals and few others have provided valuable lessons and inspiration for me: Thomas Edison, R. Tagore, Marie Curie, Jack Kilby, Rachel Carson, Robert Noyce, Marshall Nirenberg, James Watson, Francis Crick, Ben Franklin are all inspiring innovators.

05b. Pick Your Own "Success Models" and "Great Minds' Who Inspire

You pick your own and learn about their lives, work and times. Their failures and eventual success.

The public library is a short distance for most of us who live in USA or Europe, or Japan I think. On the internet, is a helpful resource that I use all the time. I love bookstores, both new and used.

06. Self Introduction

I am pursuing technology innovation by first define areas of technology innovations that are important to me and then seeking "demo projects" via a small group "virtual team" formation, often inspired by the needs of a community of which I am a part.

I am in the process of creating a "bridge" between the small tech biz community to which I belong and have served in a community service capacity for many years and identified technical experts at nearby research universities and/or experts associated with a consultant network via the technical professional society
