Examples of Presidential Assassination attempts in American History - Attempts against President Obamas Life

Updated on March 11, 2011

Bad Signs in Culture and Media

Nov 11,2008, Schoolchildren chant "Assassinate Obama" on an Idaho schoolbus. Certainly not a threat to our leader but where and how was this thought planted in their heads, what type of parents or educators are they exposed to?

Feb 10, 2008, British Nobel Prize winner Doris Lessing, said: "He would probably not last long, a black man in the position of president. They would kill him."

Unfortunately, this statement unlike most is not made by an ignorant redneck and is not racially motivated, merely a cynical view of our possible future.

How many assassination attempts on Obama? Do you predict?

Threats towards our President Elect: Senator Barack Obama

Death threats and idle talk about assassination attempts should not be taken likely by popular culture, media and society.

A Quick History:

Presidents slain while in office:

  • Abraham Lincoln
  • James A. Garlfield
  • William McKinley
  • John F. Kennedy

Is Lessing right?

Do you believe that Obama will be assassinated?

See results

Although you may be unfamiliar with this information, Two other Presidents should be on the list

  • Zachary Taylor

  • Warren G. Harding

In academic and scholarly circles both Presidents are accepted to have been the victims of poison plots. Zachary Taylors remains were exhumed and found to have substantial levels of arsenic and Warren G. Harding died of symptoms attributable to poisoning at a time when his impeachment seemed certain.

In 1981, Ronald Reagan was shot and saved by quick emergency surgery.

When one calculates, 43 unique office holders and 6 successful assassination attempts,

6 / 43 = 0.139534884 or 14% - 16% if Reagan had not received modern life saving medicine.

A sitting President has a 14-16% chance of being killed in office, surely this is not the stuff of jest.

In addition, 20 attempts to kill sitting Presidents are accepted and documented. Ranging from Andrew Jackson being saved by two pistols misfiring to a small plane divebombing the Whitehouse during the Clinton Presidency.

Recent news of threats against Obama

So keeping in mind that our new head of state is mortal and despite the Hollywood scenario of an invincible Secret Service, assassins, lunatics, zealots, fame-junkies and wing nuts can break through and injure our leaders.

Recently, 20-year old Daniel Cowart of Bells, Tennessee, and 18-year-old Paul Schlesselman, of West Helena, Arkansas were arrested with five guns in their possession by the ATF in Tennessee.

According to an ATF affidavit, one of the weapons in their possession was a FASI .308 caliber high powered rifle which they intended to use in the planned attempt while wearing white tuxedos and white top hats they also intended on massacring 88 + 14 youths at a predominately black high school.

They were apprehended on the evening of 10/22/2008 due to their vehicle drawing attention, as they had covered it with racist graffiti. Its not likely that these two fools would have been successful but they were armed and stocked with masks ropes and ammunition.

08/25/2008 , On the eve of the Democratic National Convention, 3 men, also with high powered rifles, scopes and masks were arrested in connection with a plot to assassinate Obama. These men Adolf, Gartrell, Johnson could also be considered skin-heads or white supremacists. A sizable quantity of methamphetamine was found in their possession. Official charges for attempting to assassinate a Presidential candidate were not made, as it was determined that their drug addled, racists brains and claims did not constitute a significant threat.

08/02/2008 , Raymond Hunter Geisel, was detained in relation to threats against the then Senator Obama, stating "if he gets elected, Ill kill him myself". He was found with a small arsenal of weapons and ammunition. To be fair he apparently threatened the life of George Bush also, so he is an equal opportunity nutjob. He is being held on federal charges as it is a federal crime to threaten the life of a Presidential candidate. It does appear that he is simply a lunatic and a gun nut who made no real motions towards acting on his supposedly jestful remarks. There does not seem to be any connections to white supremacist movements.

So are the white supremacist/neo-nazis/skinhead groups out to get Obama?

It would seem like an easy connection, a dark skinned candidate for President (His ethnicity being half Kenyan/half White American according to Wiki), would rankle the racists, but in the course of my research, I came across a rather vocal Supremacist Leader, David Duke. As a former Grand Wizard of the KKK and the administrator of a racist/supremacist themed bulletin board with a massive following whos position seems to be that (his opinion) the inevitable downfall of our country under Obama leadership will only help their cause by driving white people into their flock. Apparently, the government is setting up the Neo Nazis / Skin Heads / Bigots as the patsy for their (Government) schemes.

Without giving any authority to what I would consider a vile man, that one point is valid, crazy rednecks with guns dont kill Presidents. People in power who choose to look away, not properly secure areas or not install metal detectors kill Presidents.

If an assassination attempt was to be successful, It would be because those people with influence allowed it to happen. I have no idea who those people with influence are but surely big money, banking interests, political families have all sorts of controls and manipulations that we the common citizens can not understand.

I had planned to include samples of comments from all over the web on blogs and bulletin boards with large readerships and respectable followings, references to Ted Nugents antics, allusions of Hillary Clintons intentions during campaign speeches etc. but it came to a point where I dont want to repost or glamorize the colossal amount of ignorant, hateful language and positions that I came across.

In an attempt to bring some lightness to this morbid account, I would like to point out that among the so called assassination attempts we had one Cowart, one Hunter and one Adolf. Ive seen many stories relating to the coincidences relating to assassins and serial killers names. So parents please be a little more careful with your naming traditions.

As a country it really seem like we have to put a huge effort into better education at all ages including adult education and community education.I really believe at a personal level that better exposure to cultures and the world could really dampen the quantity of prejudice in our universal mind.

Without getting into a hunting argument, Real men dont need high powered rifles and scopes to kill anything, they should not be legal. If you want to hunt, then be good at it, track, get close...scopes are for assassins and pussies who sit in trees killing bucks for sport from football field distances because they dont have the education to spark up a conversation with a woman

Should high powered rifles and scopes be available to the public?

      Mr Peterson,

Communism is not outlawed in America. Please try harder to understand what freedom means. Its a rather important part of being a Patriot. Thank You.

In his his own admission,Obama is a communist.Communism is outlawed in America. The proper and lawful means for ridding the world of any feculent communist wretch, such as Obama is impeachment. The penalty for treason is death(as it should be).The organic laws of the united States of America are recorded in United States Code Title 1(which laws are long antecedent to said Code, wherein you will find that the private right to keep and bear arms does not rely upon any document for it's immutable validity.

I lived in the US a few years. There is certainly a noticeable difference in racial attitudes between Canada and the US. I was very surprised. To me it seemed to be based on fear. There was a black town that no one would dare to drive through... Of course, being used to a different mind set I had to drive through the town, right down the main street. We didn't have any problem. The people in the town were all black but none of them threw rocks or really bothered to do anything. No surprise to me but everyone else in the car was expecting a shoot out.

I don't know why anyone needs all that high powered stuff. How can you call yourself a hunter if you use a computer and far more science and weapon power than the animal you are aiming for. Yeah, big man, NOT. I think the only reason anyone buys guns like that is with the idea of shooting at people. Some say they collect guns but the odd part is they also collect the ammunition. If you aren't going to use the gun, why do you need the bullets?

I don't know how Obama will do. I don't think he would have been elected without all that media showcasing from Oprah and the celebrities. With all that he could have been purple with alien tentacles and gotten elected.

Excellent hub, Sunforged, even though I don't agree with all your points. I grew up with guns and was a hunter and skeet shooting champ. I recently wrote a hub about how I once had to weild my trusty shotgun against intruders into my home.

While I'm not an Obama supporter, I do respect him as POTUS and hope nothing bad happens to him!

I've seen some of the stuff that the libertarian right wingers in the US have been producing recently. If I were in the US Secret Service, I would be more concerned about your president's safety than ever. There are a lot of very angry people out there.

In Europe, life is a lot safer for politicians. We know that the leading politicians, whether they are in power or the opposition are idiots. We know they are all lying through their teeth and we also know that if one were to get assassinated, the next one would be equally, if not even more incompetent.

The chances are that even if someone managed to assassinate a leader, if they were lucky they would get a life jail sentence that means life, or the politician's bodyguards would shoot him or her first, so it's difficult to see how the assassin would benefit. Terrorists never seem to go after politicians, ordinary people are a much softer target.

Interestingly enough, I learned recently that there were several attempts to assasinate Soviet leaders, and the would be assassins got fairly short jail terms and were subsequently released. 2 of these former assassins even ended up living in the same apartment block in Moscow!

excellent, well put together article on a very serious subject. I've read Obama's book, Dreams From My Father, and after reading it, I felt that his presidency is certainly a calling. He is much smarter than many will credit him for. There are times in history that cause great divide and generally it is when there is so much at stake. People have their opinions and when someone like Obama comes along, history has a new chapter to write.

Yeah...the redneck comments need to stop. It seems when anyone discusses racists, rednecks, etc. everyone assumes it all leads to the South. Redneck is actually a derivative of farmers being in the sun too long and began in the center of the country from Indiana to Iowa and Missouri.

Let me tell you there were more race riots in the northeast, midwest, and far west in the 1960's than in the south. People have forgotten Philadelphia, Detroit, Boston bussing, etc.

Today, the KKK, skinheads, neo-nazis and the likes are headquartered and have their largest group concentrations in the midwest and far west but people assume that Obama attackers are all redneck idiots from the south.

Good hub none the less and very good writing. Great for educated and respectful debate. Keep it up!

Sandman, unfortunately I do not have much debate for you...I am impressed that you have lived so much of your life in the service of america and a greater good.

I still think you qualify as a gun nut, but I do not consider that to be a denigration, I certainly feel that you have every right to have a weapon or multiple also most certainly have had tons of expereince and training in a high stress situation you can handle it.....I also have had lots of gun safety training and spent many ,many years at the range and skeet shooting. I dont feel that the average american should just be able to walk into a store and purchase a weapon, there should certainly be at least as rigorous a system as it takes to get a drivers license! So it seems that we are in agreement on most things, dont know what to debate you about!

I wasnt questioning your lofty ideals! I was suggesting that the crappy politicians and policymakers that you referenced in your first post have less than lofty ideals when they begin to warmonger....the soldiers that believe and follow the mass line are above reproach from me as a strong standing army is necessary to democracy and peace...just wish we didnt have to use them so much and so quickly

Sunforged, the whole 90% thing is called sarcasm, or exhageration (thats a joke).... it isnt meant to represent the real numbers, Obama played the race and homosexual card in his campaign and yes of course it was a huge boost to the votes he received that got him elected... technically thats not a 100% accurate because a huge part of voters who do vote dont actually matter in the end it is the electorial votes from the individual states that make the biggest difference in who wins the race... and no I am not a gun nut I am a soldier, I may no longer be on active duty but I am still a soldier.... I have Hunting rifles, AR-15 .223 rifles, AR-10 .308 Rifles, and even my daughter has her own little rifle (shes 12, I bought her a Cricket 22 cal rifle for her 10th birthday because that is what she wanted and now she wants a Henry 22 cal lever action Rifle since she outgrew her cricket rifle) we also have a few handguns, I have Cowboy Action Single Action Ruger Vaquero, and 4 semi automatic pistols in 9mm, .40 cal, 45 long colt, and 45 auto... so yeah there are a couple guns in our house... I am a soldier I am suppossed to be armed...... you know though I didnt even own a firearm until a year or two after my wife and I were married (its our 17th year being married now) so until a whole family was brutally murdered by the womansex husband broke in, shot his ex wife and her new husband, then shot all 3 of the children.... the new husband lived long enough to crawl over to his nextdoor neighbors house to have them call an ambulance and the police.... thats all it took to make me actually go out and buy a handgun... and my wife and daughter both whole heartedly agree that we need firearms to protect our family and home,

Now picture this, if the family had a firearm accessable in the home and the family knew how to use it then this tragedy might have not been as bad as it was, what I mean is when the first shot went off they could have had a fighting chance if one of the 5 people had been able to get to it and save at least some of the family members instead of each and every one of them being murdered in the middle of the knight... this is not an isolated incident, these type of murders happen each and every day in america... why? well because its easier for criminals and gang bangers to get guns then the family who merely wants one to have for home protection... so by taking away the firearms for the good upstanding family that only wants to try and protect themselves... and yes I agree that often the homeowner with a gun gets it turned on themselves, however if these people were taught how to handle the gun these incidents might be less, both my wife and daughter are very proficient on using both the rifles and the handguns in the house, another thing that goes against people that get their guns used on themselves dont keep it to where it can be loaded quick and easily they had the gun upstairs and the ammunition in the basement so what gould is a gun if it cant be used in the time you need it most? I guess you could throw it at the intruder and you might get lucky and bean him in the head??? (joke) proper training on the use of firearms is a must for all family members old enought to use it when it is needed most.. now if Oobama is able to get an overall gun ban through congress then we are all really REALLY screwed severely.... a huge percentage of home firearm owners never even touch the firearm after buying it (I am speaking of the ones buying said firearm for home protection) which means they really have no idea how to use the dang thing and the criminal is going to teach them exactly how to use it... when he takes it and uses it on them... so if you want a firearm for home protection then learn how to use, actually take it to the range and see how it feels to shoot it, how loud it is when fired, and how to use it safely dont buy a gun and throw it in the nightstand and store the bullets in the basement...

and i dont think my ideas are lofty as you put it, I do beleive in truth and honor and I would like to beleive that a good portion of our citizens are of the same mindset , I think generally people are good, of course you have bad along with the good.... you know maybe you are right I might have lofty expectations of my fellow americans, but I have been in service of this country in one way or another since I was 17 which was the age at which I enlisted into the US Army, now I have also been a Police officer, a fire fighter as well as a search and rescue diver I was also a first responder/paramedic all at once at the same fire department an so I have done more than my share of giving and saving lives as well as taking them (when in the army)

hey by the way I do love a good clean healthy debate so fire away I can take constructive criticism and I will try to lower my lofty ideals

WOW! You wrote all that in response to this article, I am honored.

In general, all of your stats are off -90% of the vote was african american! are actually a gun nut..check out the stats on who gets killed by guns kept in the house ...hint, usually you or your children....On the other hand Im not impressed yet by the Obama administration, but time will tell.

and yes...soldiers and injured vets deserve a much bigger piece of the pie

I think lots of people know better than the founding fathers they just dont tend to make it very far in our current political climate.

Thanks for sharing your opinion, and I am sorry to here you were disabled in service..I only hope that we were in fact fighting for the lofty ideals that you mentioned

well here is my rant on the whole Obama subject and you can call me a redneck or racist or whatever else you might think of me I have just as much right to voice my opinion as each and every one of you!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Well I am neither a redneck nor a racist, I actually grew up as the only white family in an all black neighborhood in central California, I grew up on farms and ranches before we moved to this town, but that's neither here nor there... as for Obama being the right choice for president of the united states well it is probably the biggest joke in American history, 90% of the votes that won him the commander in chief were from black people that thought he might do good for them and the whole gay and lesbian communities that thought he would represent them too...

HAH the jokes on them because Obama thinks its an affront to God to be gay or lesbian... and as far as him representing the black community I don't know how they think that'll ever happen since he himself thinks he is more white than anything else so jokes on them that voted thinking it would help them in one way or another

The next thing that really burns my ass is how all you people can sit there and say OH YEAY Obama is president were moving into the future now when this man is going to ruin America, especially if he ends up banning weapons for American citizens that are good honest upstanding people who have a right to own weapons for whatever reason they see fit, banning guns for the honest person that is in no way going to use it to break the law is just another thing they have seen fit to strip away from the constitution... hell it sickens me to think that I served this country, and nearly gave my life more than once, I am permanently disabled from that service and what we fought for is to preserve the constitution, to protect this country from all enemies both foreign and domestic, and if you are subverting the constitution then it would appear that you are an enemy that falls under the latter

how can this man be president if he wont even cover his heart for this country and the flag which it represents? there was even question if he was even American born? and last I heard he still hadn't provided proof that he was a natural born American.. its slap in the face to every man and woman that has ever served this country and gave life and limb to see that the people are protected.. I am not saying he should be assassinated but he never should have been allowed to run for the highest office in this country if he wont even show enough respect to cover his heart like everyone else, no he just stood there fidgeting around like oh god please get this over with quick... and if you didn't see the video you should, it happened on more than one occasion and to add insult to injury he wants to take away our guns too?

if the individual guns are taken away from honest good god fearing citizens then this country will fall, its not the military that will save this country if our shores were ever invaded (and don't scoff it can happen) and will happen when the rest of the world sees that the only people with guns are cops and crooks, murderers and rapists, oh and our powder puff military of this day and age (don't get me started on that rant) if this country were ever invaded its the private gun owners that will push those stupid enough to try and invade this country.. and no I am not a card carrying member of the NRA or a gun nut survivalist in any way shape or form... but I do believe in defending my family from criminals as well as defending my country from those who would seek to do it harm..

As I said before Obama does not have this countries best interest in mind, he has his best interest in mind, he will drive us to the brink of destruction or worse... if he wants to cap someones salary how about the politicians that get ungodly amounts of money for themselves and their staff.. or the ex presidents that get secret service escorts far after their term in office is over.. billions of tax payers dollars go to people who are no longer serving this country and will never have to work again as long as they live... do the research yourself, see how much money the standing politicians as well as those no longer in service get each year, ex presidents and their families that rake in tons of money every year for doing nothing then they make even more money on the whole speaking in public and giving lectures and all that crap... its the greedy politicians that are breaking the banks in America.. cut off their money after their terms in office is over, I mean if you get fired from a job or quit a job they don't still pay you for years after you no longer work for them, hell no you have to find another job, if you want to give money to someone for serving this country how about those that hold the weapons on the front lines fighting wars for this country they have done far more than any politician has ever done for the US... its a sad world we live in when the American President wont even salute the flag of the country he serves... its an insult plain and simple

as far as Obama goes maybe he will be a good president in the future but from what I have seen so far, the common man gets screwed every time, there are people out there with billions of dollars that they could never use in a 100 lifetimes yet they are greedy and keep it all for themselves instead of actually doing some good with it... if I had millions or billions of dollars you can bet it would be used to help people instead of sitting in a bank where it doesnt do anyone any good... if Obama wants to be a good president then he needs to make sure he supports the constitution instead of trying to change what has worked of a couple hundred years... our founding fathers wrote the constitution to make sure all americans were safe and were not trampled on by the government and have their rights taken away because some politician thinks he/she knows better than the founding fathers... the constitution is meant to protect our rights, and whether some of you think guns should be banned for the upstanding citizens doesnt matter, its our right, if you dont lke it then dont buy guns thats your right too... just like freedom of speech and right to worship anyway you want.... you cant take something away from the people of a country because you dont like it, and you have the right to voice your opinion or wait should we take away that right too? or take away your right to go to any church you want or worship any god you want... how would you like it if these rights were taken away? no you wouldnt so just because you dont like one part of the constitution doesnt mean you can pick and choose what parts you think are good or bad and cut them out... it doesnt work that way... you take it as a whole or not at all... thats the way it was written and it is the way it needs to stay

Wow! With stats like that who'd be President? Personally I'm very glad that Obama got the top job, but then what do I know sitting on the other side of the Atlantic?

As to the guns question, you might have guessed, that being British I'm totally against fire arms being freely available. Of course we do have gun crime here, but the reason that it is so rare is because possession of firearms is very strictly regulated, and guns are extremely hard to get hold of. I know that concept doesn't go down well in the USA but it is a fact nonetheless.

Southerngirl, "redneck" is a noun and "stupid" is an adjective.  There is a reason I chose to use one of each.  Ajectives are used to clarify meaning.   A stupid redneck is different than an educated one, just as a red apple is different than a green one.  I believe you have assigned my (and perhaps someone else's, I'm not sure) use of the adjective "stupid" as a redundancy when coupled with the noun "redneck," as if I'd said something redundant like "stupid idiot" or "wet water."  So for whatever it's worth, I think you have read into my use of the term "redneck" as being a noun synonymous with "stupid" and have thus either assumed I'm a lackwit writer prone to redundancy, or perhaps you have jumped the gun on defensiveness.  Either way, no offense was meant, nor was any written at least on my part, if you take a moment to look at the langauge that I used.  (I married a redneck, and many of the dearest people in my life have been rednecks.  If I were going to stereotype them, I would say they are the kindest most loving people in the world, still practicing outdated things like generosity, loyality and honor.)

You would have to be 1) crazy/ no,don't think so. 2) antichrist , yeah right been there done that. 3) maybe just maybe someone that thinks he can do something good for his country.

If I was American and I'm not I would give the poor bugger a go and see what he does.

I have always believed in following the money. By this I mean, what hate group has the money to assassinate the president in these high tech times. Its more than a few men in black suits protecting Obama. I liked your hub. Another thing, I would have felt better if Hillary were vice president.

So your a proud educated redneck not a "stupid" redneck.

I never intended to make redneck and stupid synonymous. Ill look through and edit if that is what Ive done.

Im a "new yawker" and would never be worried about being left in the room alone with anyone.

But, Im not really accustomed to anyone using redneck as a positive term...maybe Jeff Foxworthy but he got rich making "stupid" redneck jokes, so I did not realize I could be insulting anyone

Glad, I got you riled up ...thanks for reading

I would like to be the first to say that I am a redneck. A high school AND college graduate. So I think everyone saying the "stupid" rednecks should be left alone in a room with one. We'll show you stupidity.

      But other than THAT..

Great hub. I really enjoyed this one alot. Kinda makes you think doesn't it?

      -The REDNECK.

Very well researched, interesting hub on a very real (and scarey) topic. Good hub. This kind of balances out and gives some sanity after the "antiChrist "hub.

Well, you made me laugh on that stupid Obama is the antichrist hub, so I rolled the dice and thought I'd check this out.  Nice work man, you dug in and did real work here (plus, you can actually write, a real bonus).

I think you're dead on, the dumb rednecks are just too stupid to be a real threat.  They aren't the danger no matter how hateful they speak or how many guns they buy.  They're too stupid to pull it off.  I saw a documentary about five or so years ago where a black professor from some college (don't remember where) did his own research into the KKK, even going down there (with friends obviously) and interviewing people and digging in.  I expected him to come back and be angry, but, he came back and, in a nutshell, he just said, "I felt sorry for them."  They were so stupid that he couldn't even be mad at them.  Like being mad at dog for crapping on the lawn.  They don't understand what they are doing. Not that they couldn't understand, but they really are that uneducated and brainwashed and backwards.

Anyway, on a lighter note, Eddie Murphy talked about the first black president a long time ago, and your hub made me go find the you tube video for it.  I figured you might even want to put it in a video module for the hub if it makes you laugh, since it fits nicely with your point and has a bit of prophetic genius for old Eddie, whose genius I still respect despite how many write his early work off due to its profanity.

In depth article and interestng as your facts are right on target and it drew me in. You are correct a it certainly wouldn't be the little man who would do such a thing as there are Klansman and White Surpremists in our own government that is what amazes me. How in the hell can they be a part of our congress or senate and be so ignorant and blind? Wonderful article!!!
