A Swim To A Burmese Prison

The man you see at the right is now in a prison in the Union of Myanmar. Most people know it as Burma. What he did is crazy, but I am sure he had a good reason.

John Yettaw, as of about 1 week ago, lived just a few miles from me. One of his children went to school with my daughter.

What John did is just unbelievable. John was arrested for entering a restricted zone and for breaking immigration laws. John swam over 1 mile to the home and the jail for the last 13 years of pro-democracy leader Aung San Suu Kyi. Her pictures are also at the right. She has won a Nobel Peace Prize.

Aung San Suu Kyi has been under house arrest for 13 years and the arrest was due to end on May 27th. She took Yettaw into her home for 2 days and now she has been sent to a different prison after Yettaw was caught leaving.

Many feel that with elections coming up in Myanmar in 2010, that this is a ploy by the Burmese government to keep Suu Kyi out of the running. The present regime is using this to keep her under wraps.

Many people are blaming Yettaw, but I believe he was part of a larger plan. If the regime in Burma wanted her out of the picture, they may have done it differently after May 27th.

My prayers are with Aung San Suu Kyi and with John Yettaw. I also pray for the children he has here.

I know my daughter just about fainted when she saw his picture.

Here are a couple videos of Suu Kyi. May she gain democracy in Burma!

This is a new perspective for me. I'm sure your friend had a noble ambition and motivation. It's a damned shame the consequences his actions have had in the life of Aung San Suu Kyi, who may die is prison as a result. So sad...

Thank you for writing this. From what I understand, in photos that were taken, guards stood by and watched Yettaw get into the water and never did anything to prevent it. We can only hope they release both of them.

This man decided on some strange impulse to swim across the Inya lake to the house where Suu Kyi has been held prisoner for the best part of 19 years and, despite her remonstrations, stayed there for two days & nights.

The trouble he has caused Suu Kyi is almost enormous. Just days away from her release from the latest six-year period of detention, the junta jumped on the chance to lock her up again. She was detained in Insein PRISON where she is due to learn her fate at today's trial - possibly another period of home imprisonment or, worse, a period in jail.

This man is charged with trespass but the heartbreak of Aung San Suu Kyi's story is immeasurable.

Yea, she is gorgeous! Pretty tough deal for your neighbor. I wonder what he was doing in Burma and what his connection was with her? This is an interesting story. Thanks.
