What people is this that transcend all hope,

surging beyond the limits and bindings of a rope,

Beginning their lives in captivity and so grim,

how could such strength, from these, so stem?

They were forced into ships by shameful men,

and now their hard journey would soon begin,

Families of a people once so full of great pride,

now seemingly lost, washed away in the tide.

Sold at market and in treatment, inhumane,

their anguish to fall, like tears, as the rain,

Mothers, fathers, and their children, sent away,

then never to see each one, another day,

To work on plantations in regions of this world,

the souls, each bright spirit, was then so hurled,

New lives of hardships and strange in its ways,

To toil in such labor, over all of their days.

A turmoil so fierce, overtook the countryside,

as a war left no creature, a place to hide,

North against the South, and the land to divide,

as huge armies, and their fighting men, did abide.

A tragedy beyond conception, a terrible conflagration,

to see a splitting of this nation, was so wide,

The stench of death did prevail, it left an empty shell,

such a loss, as so many men had died.

As a leader's strength was shown, slavery, outward thrown,

so granted, and all bondage was then removed.

Although, mistakes were made, yet with freedom on parade,

with forgiveness, and a new start, it behooved.

Once slaves and bound to toil, were now free spirits of the soil,

Now to live their lives, the length, to perform great feats of strength,

The pride and inner power, of every creature and small flower,

Our human traits are so grand, and to endure, we understand.

Escaping all the shame, now unchained, given back each name,

then all arose to find their calling, upon this earth.

For every God graced man. by his sweat, and from his hands,

has all his wealth, so earned, and is of the greatest worth.

My first year in that school was my most memorable and inspired me to go on into a new and self fulfilling field, advancing my education in the areas of special education and true humanity in life. Thank you for your shared comments.

My students were discussing this the other day in class. They shared how their ancestors had struggled through these times and how they learned to survive. It has made them proud of who they are. Wonderful post and so inspiring.

What could be more of a true testament to the human spirit and what a people can accomplish, than that of people of color?

As a new teacher in the southern United States, in 1970 it was a turbulent time, both in Asia and within our own country, especially in the South.

As a white man I can only hope that I can begin to understand the inner strength and all that people of color have had to endure. Many friends over the years, have shared their troubles and stress with me, as a teacher of Special Needs Children, I saw it daily and tried to help as best I could. I was blessed to begin my teaching career in an all black populated school and learned much about the human condition. All I can say, is, that by the grace of God, we will love each other, and all honor and respect I give to my fellow man, regardless of race, or color.
