American Political Theater

Updated on January 10, 2014

By: Wayne Brown

What is it about 29 billion dollars in debt service that demands approval of a 900 billion dollar debt ceiling increase for the federal government? What is it we or might I say, President Obama, plans to buy that costs the taxpayers an addition 831 billion dollars over the next two years…all of it borrowed money? Who came out of this so-called last minute agreement as the winner….why none other than our little money spending President Obama basically getting all that he asked for on this Christmas in August. The rest was filler, eyewash, something for the soul of the taxpayer to help him ease the pain of swallowing as the heroes take to the stage and proclaim victor y for all. It reminds me of the guy down the street who is swimming in debt to the point that he will drown and then one day he comes running down the street with yet another credit card with a new credit line.

Obama got what he wanted which was taxpayer money to buy votes and popularity for his re-election campaign. Those who represent us on both sides of the aisle got what they wanted which was essentially off the hook and out from under the eye of scrutiny by the American public. Oh, and they also get to keep on spending which is what all do so well. They all promised to slow the rate of growth in spending which was the math they employed to get the ten trillion dollars they promised to save the American taxpayer over the next ten years. Now, assuming that ten trillion dollars is real, what do you suppose they will do with it? Do not say pay off some of the debt because you would be wrong. Saving money by buying something on sale does not necessarily mean that you have the cash on hand to use the difference in the price to pay a bill…cash flow does not work that way when you are overburdened with debt. No, the answer is the effect of saving that ten trillion dollars will likely not show up anywhere. It won’t be in the treasury or down at the bank or in the President’s pocket…it won’t be anywhere except in our imagination.

The best way I can explain the money saved in this deal knocked out by both sides of the aisle is to say that we purchased future debt at a bargain. We are going to get to spend as though we would end up with a 35 trillion dollar national debt at the end of ten years but this week, and this week only, friends and neighbors, we are going to let you have that spending at the ridiculously low, unheard of price of just 25 trillion dollars at the end of the same ten year period. Now is that a deal or what? Yeah buddy! What fool or political hack in his right mind would turn down a once in a life time opportunity like that? Not many it appears.

Without runaway inflation, it is doubtful that the value of America’s good and services, the Gross Domestic Product, can reach a level of 25 trillion in ten years. If it does, it will have almost doubled in value in that time frame. That cannot happen without inflation through the roof. This is not China and our annual growth rates no longer come anywhere close to a double digit number. Given that fact, what do you think ultimately happens in terms of debt and credit ratings for America? All those fears which were bandied around this past few weeks are inevitable and an absolute certainty over this period of time. Our elected officials have sold us out once again and kicked the can down the road because they have no balls and they do not feel they are highly paid enough to make the tough decisions which are overdue to be made and adhered to in this Country.

Why don’t we, as taxpayers, all chip in and ship the President his own personal shopping cart for Christmas this year. Based on his financial needs outlined in this agreement it is apparent that he is going to be in the market for a lot of things. For God sakes, I hope one of them is not another stimulus package. I’ll bet it is because that is a wonderful place to bury money and not account for it when people ask questions. This man is breaking America’s financial back while he vacations an plays golf. By the end of his first term, he will have added over 7 trillion dollars to the national debt. Not bad for a one term President equipped with a Congress that cannot even generate a budget for our government…no wonder we spend freely. Hell, shopping carts for everyone…let the government buy them!

The two party political system has failed the American public miserably over the years of its existence. For so long the American taxpayer has looked the other way and not paid attention. Now, we see the charade for what it is but we have people in office who wield so much power that we may not be able to regain control of what rightfully is ours in the first place. The scam has gone on for far too long and now it has run its course in terms of originality. We are no longer fooled by some new look, approach, model, or math…the process is a system of reruns with new labels attached to them to sell as “new and improved”. What a steaming, smelly, load of total crap which has been perpetrated upon America.

In this entire process of frantically searching for just 29 billion little dollars, we have managed to commit to increasing our overall debt load by almost twice in just ten short years. Then we have the President, Senators, and Congressmen willing come out onto the steps of the capitol and proclaim their bipartisan support for this eleventh hour bill which has surely save the nation as the clock ticked down in the final minutes of the game. I don’t’ know about you but I feel abused and I think someone in Washington thinks that I am stupid which really pisses me off.

We have but one recourse come November of 2012. We have to send all of these people home and start anew. We have to send the message that they dropped the ball; they ignored accountability; they ignored our desire to move significantly closer to living within our fiscal means in this country; they saved their pork-barrel asses instead of making the hard decisions which are far overdue. It might also be noted that no one of them came forward to say they wanted to give back a significant portion of their salary and benefits as a symbol of their dedication to join the fray of the Americans who are suffering under the disastrous leadership of these posers in our capitol…not one. They continue to earn their six figures, qualify for retirement with no little or no vesting, navigate around Obama Care and enjoy the fruits of all the other benefits of being such important people. We don’t need to tax the rich in this country; we need to clean out Washington of the cockroaches who live there. Let everyone of them go to sleep at night in fear of not having a job after the next election…maybe that would change their minds about making hard decisions.

The self-assigned importance of those who serve us in Washington is enough to gag a maggot. Talk about entitlements; these folks take the cake. There is no sensitivity to spending the taxpayers dollar…it is simply a benefit of gaining the position. “How dare you speak ill of me sir, I am a U.S. Senator!” That is the attitude I see from Reid and McConnell. Boehner should be starring in Walton reruns in the place of the original John Boy. I noticed he is not crying as much lately….must have sucked it up and is now showing his political muscle. The Democrats could not have gained more in this process if Boehner had been absent from the proceedings. That’s okay, he looks good on television and he shows up for all the Sunday talks shows and that’s all that is important in the end….you know, communicating with his people, the real Americans who work hard and pay their hard earned tax money. With folks like this around in Washington, who needs a guardian angel?

The “debt can” will officially be kicked down the road with the Senate’s shoe-in vote around midday Washington time on Tuesday, 2 August 2011. The President should be on the White House podium soon after the official vote has been confirmed hailing the new day in Washington when both sides of the aisle can come together to save America for certain ruin; hailing the heroic efforts of the leaders who have brought their parties together in America’s darkest hours to vote on a ridiculous program that all but doubles the national debt over the next ten years just to figure out how to pay off 29 billion dollars in interest debt service in 2011. Yes, it will be a grand old time in America and an even grander one in Washington as the actors of the Capitol Hill Little Theater celebrate the success of their latest three-act drama which won hearts and minds and sent the big bad wolf away from our door. Our straw house called America is safe once again.

Thanks to a majority of those on the right, the President has received what amounts to yet another stimulus package to apply as he desires. Yes, over and above the debt service due, the right has just handed the President another $800+ billion dollars. But this stimulus is different. Remember how the first one got wasted on things like green jobs, ACORN, unions, etc.? Well, you’ll see some of that in this second package but mostly the focus in it will be on getting Obama re-elected so that he has four more years to create another 7 trillion dollar debt load of deficit spending for America.

In the pool of talking heads of Congress out making the talk show rounds last night, I watched as a New York Democrat remarked that the federal government had been distracted for far too long. He stated that it was past time to get back to the focus of “spending” and creating jobs in the economy. They say that ignorance breeds ignorance and here is a great example of it. Ignorance is doing the same thing over and over. Stupidity is following those same steps yet expecting a different outcome. The federal government is not task to create jobs and couldn’t do it if they tried unless you are talking about hiring more folks down at the post office and expanding government payroll. If that logic worked, why not just send about a half a million citizens a check for the net proceeds of a $50,000 annual salary with taxes withheld. The government would get the benefit of the revenue tax stream and the citizen would spend the money and improve the economy…sounds like a plan but why has no one suggested it? It meets all the qualifications for ignorance and stupidity.

The only thing the Republicans have accomplished with their compromise on this bill is to assure that more of the status quo will continue. They essentially conceded over two trillion dollars in debt accumulation for the promise of a “cut in the rate of spending” over the next ten years. There is a rumor there were also some really pretty beads and a bottle of whiskey in the deal but Boehner will not confirm or deny that fact.

Wake up America, you country is being pissed away by a whole bunch of folks who have everything but your best interest at the forefront of their mind. The Capitol Hill Little Theater has just kicked off another of what looks like a banner season of “fool ‘em and rule ‘em”. Transparency is all around us as we are bathed in “hope and change.” Gee, I “hope” that we don’t go broke while we are “changing” our minds about how much we like socialism.

@Old Poolman...I would guess that is something our government is doing in an attempt to stimulate business for Embraer. It would interesting to know if you get the same deal on a Cessna made here in America. Probably another "cash for clunkers" deal by Obama and company. WB

Speaking of Jets, I heard on the radio yesterday a person can purchase a 3 Million dollar Jet in Brazil, then get a 1.2 Million dollar tax credit in the US. How the heck does this work?

@breakfastpop...Yeah, it must have seemed logical then that Obama would be taxing corporate jets! LOL! WB

Wayne, you know we are in trouble when the man on the street didn't know we had a debt crisis, but thought we had a "jet" crisis!

Wayne, sometimes ignorance really is bliss.

@FitnezzJim...Right on, Brother, right on! WB

@Jo_Godsmith11....We still have a country where 40% of the people see nothing wrong with what is going on politically in this country. They have no fear of financial ruin or of socialism dominating our way of life. In their minds, all that comes from watching too much television and could not happen in America because we are "blessed and special" and everything always works out in the right way. Ignorance and apathy dominate their ability to foresee the potential future. I am not sure you can hide from what is going on in America...even if you don't live here. If Obama and company can bring our republic to its knees and put it in the hands of a global socialist movement, the other countries of the world don't have a's just a matter of time. If we don't save ourselves we are nothing more than cattle standing in land awaiting our individual turn in the slaughter chute....a sad situation and very scary I might add. There are days that I would rather be like 40% that cannot conceive what is happening. WB

Wayne, the other problem is that with the present system, the government gets their money from your paycheck before you get yours.

@Author Karin K.H....Our elected ones claim that it is all about the little people. Of course that is only lip service to buy votes. When that is not working, they start demonizing those who they consider rich...most the small business sector which provides more than 70% of the jobs in the country. Divisiveness is the new way of getting things done in Washington. It no longer matters whether or not you lie, it is the fact that you achieved your outcome. Just look at Obama and his attitude, it doesn't matter to him that he lied six ways from Sunday to obtain the is the fact that he accomplished the goal...there's no need to worry about any laws being broken because he is the savior of America and it is right and good that he be in his mind it is fate which allows his hand of socialism to hold America by the scruff of the neck and shake every nickel out of its pockets. @Jo_Goldsmith...If we held an "anti-tax" rally, only 50% of the people could show up...the rest of them don't pay any taxes anyway. The consume all over the place but do not pay taxes...that is the inequity in our tax code and it needs to be rectified to produce a more efficient tax base and equity. The problem with consumer products taxation is that it takes away Washington's opportunity to redistribute wealth and they will not go for that...the almight in Washington must decide who will get and who will pay. A friend of mine worked a a 3% tax paid by the seller on all products sold to include real estate and stocks/bonds/etc. The application of such tax would produce more than enough revenue to totally do away with the present income tax structure and it does not place any unreasonable burden on anyone in the processing. Washington is so corrupt that it can never get passed unless we clean out the city, spray it for infestation and start completely over. We have just one more election left to do that in 2012. After that point, if Obama and his band of socialist are still here along with Reid, Pelosi and their liberal thug element, the country will be far too down the river to recover and socialism will be our name. You have nailed it on the head. I wonder what would happen if every American didn't pay their taxes in protest? What would happen then? What would happen if we took to the streets and boycotted in a peaceful way to tell Washington that "We are mad! and we aren't going to take it anymore"!? My concern is the "tea party" folks that try to use minipulation in its greatest evil form to get what they want. I am seriously considering leaving the US and moving to a country where they know how to handle the "people's money". Great hub! voted up!

@dazkittlez69...Of course, in that pool of talking heads yesterday from either side of the aisle, did you hear one expression of regret in terms of our children that the Congress or President, they are too happy just sustaining the status quo. WB

@dahoglund...Just goes to show you DA...even if it walks like a duck today, there is a fair chance that it is not a duck at all...but according to Washington, it is a viable substitute that folks should be very proud to have! LOL! WB

@Peter Lumeta...I hope that I can live long enough to see the people of America muster enough courage to literally clean house in Waahington or to use the President's term..."shellack" their asses. America is asking again and again for the hard choices to be made and all we are getting from either side is more rhetoric and political posturing. Downstream spending cuts based on rate reduction do not work in this town...never have, never will but it gives the baby a pacifier to suck on while we run the clock out and get out of town. If the FBI is searching for "organized crime", they must not be looking in Washington D.C. WB

@TimBryce...I see this as Stimulus Package #2 Tim. Why would you borrow or print $900 billion when the debt in question is only about 29 billion dollars? The best answer I can come up with is that the lid was off the cookie jar so why not take advantage of opportunity. I hope that we can count on remembering the elections of 2012 as a time of wholesale political slaughter...a time when all the pigs were turned out of the sty and sent scurrying into the woods. WB

@kateperez...Thank you. My frustration is running very high with this issue. Both sides are ducking the truth like it was some sort of plague. The drama is thick as an English fog and we are left to believe they came up with the best solution that they could agree upon...all smoke and mirrors. WB

@Old Poolman...Things have been getting progresively worse since Kennedy was gunned down on the streets of Dallas...once that happened, the crooks came out for office in force. WB

As an afterthought, I really wonder how much this political circus show cost we taxpayers? Our elected representatives had to put in a little overtime to do something they should have done long ago. I would bet the costs for extra transportation, food and lodging, and other perks could have paid off some of our debt.

    • profile image

      Old Poolman 6 years ago

This total scam has been building for a long time, and these professional scam artists have won. None of this show did anything to help we taxpayers. The truth is they do what they want to do anytime they want, and could care less if we like it.

None of this band of thieves gives a damn about you, me, or the future of this country. They have what they want, and the hell with everyone else.

The answers to our financial problems are readily available, but were not even considered during this long show we were forced to endure. Now the only battle raging is them trying to figure out who won the battle. Both sides are declaring victory, but in truth, we the citizens of this country were the big losers.

I especially appreciated it when you wrote: "can come together to save America for certain ruin; " How appropriate a statement that is!

I've been trying to tell people this for a LONG time. You did it so eloquently that I'm going to send this on to my social media links to get the word further out the door.

      Wayne -

Good write. As taxpayers, we all better get used to the rhetoric we just witnessed. It will be with us up until the 2012 elections. I find it amusing that the left calls the Tea Partiers "terrorists" - Yea, they were the ones who created the huge deficit, right? If you can't beat them, villify them I guess.

Wayne another masterful presentation of the truth. Not quite how I would have said it but the truth. Your answer is very straight forward, throw the bums out! If we can get enough people to believe we can do it then we win for a change. All we need is three things, Term Limits, Fair taxes, Stop the Waste and Fraud and we're back in business. Thanks Wayne, good work, Peter

It's been going on for a long time.As a consumer I notice we have a lot more stuff than we used to, but also it seems to flimsier. A good instance is particle board (which my brother call oatmeal board) used in construction instead of wood, because we wasted so much wood in the past. We don't know what we are buying anymore and the governments doesn't seem to care what it is buying.
