America, times are tough. Or are they America?

In America we are in the throws of economic hard times. In America we are complaining mightily. In America we have issues ---- Or do we?

I think we all know somebody who lost a house in through foreclosure. If you do not you do not have enough friends and go out and make some. I think we all know somebody who has recently had to pay huge medical bills plus huge insurance premiums. Again if you don't go meet some people.

In America we whine a whole lot. In America we think we are entitled to the best medical care and to own a house and two cars. In America we think we are entitled to great streets and highways and parks and drinking water and clear air and new clothes. We even think we should be safe from crime.

America would you like some cheese to go with that whine of yours

I just read a hub question that asked if healthy competition was good for you. My jaw dropped so hard and fast I dislocated it. The question would be funny if it were not so sad that it was asked. (and to be fair the question was asked by a citizen of a much more socialist country)

Times are hard? Apparently not if such questions are being asked. One of the greatest and most important rights for prosperity is the right to fail. With this right we have the corresponding right to succeed. And both of those require hearty competition.

There are two rights we should not recognize: Quitting and saying Can't. America the beautiful is like heaven it is more of a space than a place. Oh sure the mountains and prairies and sea to shining sea is beautiful, but that is not the beauty that makes America great.

I am talking about America, sweet America

Eric's Intervention

My good friend America, you know I love you to death, you know I care about you, you know I only want what is best for you. And so I want you to step out of denial, get off your pity pot, stop looking to others to place blame and take a good hard look at yourself. You have an illness, it is time to accept that and take the necessary steps to get well.

You still have a great body and fantastic mind. You still have the energy to get things done. You still have what it takes. But you have got to apply yourself, you have got to get up and start moving forward. You have got to take some chances and face down your demons.

I do not ask you to just get along. I do not ask you to agree all the time. I want you to stop hiding your diversity and start celebrating it. I want you to stop worrying about what is correct and start emphasizing what is right.

I need you buddy, many friends need you, but we do not need you complaining and pointing fingers. We need you to step up and lead the way by actions not by lip service.

We can stand here and dread hiking up this hill, or we can get moving and look forward to the view on top.

America why America?

I used the term America for a reason. I did not use the words United States of America for a reason. One is a place and the other should be a state of mind.

America is not about boundaries or things. America is about what makes people great. Not rules or laws or governments. It is about a will to improve, move forward and do it better than before. If we lose that, the boundaries and the armies and the buildings are no longer part of America. Because there will not be an America.

Eric's Prayer

I pray that I have the strength and courage to be an American. I pray I have the tolerance for that which I should have tolerance. And I pray I have no tolerance for that which should not be tolerated. I pray that I am granted the grace to give more than I take. I pray that when I stumble and fall I get right back so I can stumble and fall again until I get it right. I pray that when America needs me I am ready, willing and able to rise to the occasion.

I pray that each neighbor has not only nourishment for their bodies but also for their mind and spirit, so that some day we can walk as proud Americans in victory over ourselves.

Are you helping or hurting America

The choir has heard the preacher and it they all agree...now to get the word out to those who did not hear, or refuse to hear, or do not see, or refuse to see...that is our task my friend, and one we are fully capable of performing. :)

Yes, some people have a sense of entitlement, and they come from all backgrounds and socio-economic levels. We still have so much here, compared to some parts of the world.

Easter sunday, she crawled up there to survey for eggs. Then she decided she liked the position it put her in and stayed some time.

It is like we are all tiny Americas. So much potential and beauty within us all. Kind of like your articles do, we all need to get empowered not entitled. thank you friend

This is absolutely inspiring Eric! You know, I admit, I'm guilty; from time to time I complain, but complaining does nothing but cause the ears of others to bleed and I try to remind myself of that. But more than I complain, I tell people to stop complaining. Everyone has something negative to say, but nothing positive to contribute... they have it, but they haven't gotten around to realizing it yet. A very wise woman recently told me 'when you point your finger at others, you're pointing 3 fingers back at yourself', and that's the truth.

I'm so happy to see you reach out like this and make even one person think differently.

That picture of your daughter is adorable, I'd just assume you use it in all your hubs!

      Excellent Eric!

Cat, we are on a march led by Major Bill. We are not followers but we will lead in this great American movement to take back hate and move forward in love. Me Too on the negative. When you get one let me know because I may have caught the cold to, and we can change!!!

Here's to you Cat and brighter days caused by you love!!!

      Eric,

I did detect a little Billy behind these words, but what's truly inspiring is he might be our big oak tree, but we are branches, reaching out from that very tree. Your words will inspire people; they did me! One thing I have put an extreme amount of focus on lately is to stay on the positive side of things. It's too easy to find the negatives right now and it's easy to fall into the trap of others' negativity, but why let them win us over with their negativity when we can win them over with our positivity? Your branch is reaching out far! We can change and if we keep on screaming, someone's bound to hear us :-)

Here's to you as well and your inspirational ways!

Excuse my rudeness, but no shit you are on a positive roll. You are lifting people up all over the place. How wonderful to see someone just embrace and love and give. Cat know you are loved. and very special.

Eric, you must forgive my delayed response, but it took a moment to pick myself up from the floor after laughing myself out of my chair :D

Honestly, over the last couple of years of my life, I've realized to love people despite and sometimes because of their flaws. I've been a witness to and a victim of so much ugliness and I recognize how emotionally draining and psychologically damaging it can be to a person... I wan't to help build people up so they are better equipped to deal with that when they do face it. It is a shame the way so many of us treat each other, one would think we have some kind of common goal or interest in this world we share... why are we fighting each other rather than working together? And for the record Eric, I praise where I see fit and your fit as a fiddle :D

Thank you and you too are very much loved and appreciated!

Being an ocean away I have never stopped loving my homeland. Whatever I can do to wave the flag or to sign petitions which might help I do. My hope is to get back home one day and I certainly want to be sure there will be a home to get back to. Let's hope by coming together we can do what needs to be done to save America. Passing this on.

Gypsy I am sure your countries here and there are made better by you. I have a Vietnamese wife. But she grew up with the spirit of America. She truly loves both countries. Sometimes we say that a child needs two parents.
