Are Republican Voters Really Okay Losing Their Social Security Benefits?

Updated on July 20, 2015

"The essence of Government is power; and power, lodged as it must be in human hands, will ever be liable to abuse."

James Madison

How Much Have You Already Sacrificed?

Because I don't know you, I cannot speak to your current financial condition, but I can speak for myself and for millions of retired Americans who lost their life savings at the end of 2008 when we bailed out the banks and a few of the mega corporations. Our government did not rush to help the average retired citizen who had literally put thousands and thousands of dollars out of each paycheck into taxes, retirement savings and into Social Security over a very long career. What they did was vote to give an unlimited amount of our hard earned tax money to the banks and large corporations. It did not matter that they had abused their huge wealth and power and had taken enormous, unwarranted risks with their clients' money and their own because their judgment was based on greed instead of sound investment principles.

After allowing this robbery of our precious savings, these banks' executives went on to give themselves huge bonuses on our backs. They raised interest rates on credit cards, they used the money to buy each other out and they made credit almost unavailable to those who wanted to purchase a home, after already decimating the real estate market. In the first year alone, over 4 million Americans lost their homes to bank foreclosures. Millions more lost their jobs and their savings. Poverty in America grew to an astonishing 1 in 6 people. Our legislators voted to place a few puny restrictions on banks. But Citicorp was able to add verbiage to recent critical budget legislation giving banks power to undo the meager restrictions currently imposed.

Now, our newly elected Republican Senate has decided that those of us who are retired can do with less. We can sacrifice our Social Security and Medicare benefits so that the super wealthy and the mega corporations can pay less in taxes. So...If you vote Republican or Tea Party in the future, you are giving them your permission to take away your hard earned money. Are you really willing to sacrifice what they haven't already taken away and given to those who do not need it?
