Are we lost in a Multitude of Illusions?

Are we lost in a Multitude of Illusions?

Human beings are born with self-awareness and intelligence, something that we hope increases with age and experience. However with this modicum of self-awareness and intellect comes a certain arrogance that often restricts our viewpoint and development. As a species we make many judgements including our superiority about earth’s flora and fauna. We feel our supposed superiority allows us to do as we please with our mother earth. We strip her of her forests and minerals and destroy natural habitats, pollute the air and the sea, deplete the earth by over farming and pollute natural waterways with poisons, eventually creating imbalance in nature.

The results we are only now beginning to see. With populations exploding our impact on nature is escalating at a frightening rate and the ramifications are now obvious in our changing weather patterns and natural disasters. It appears our intellect doesn’t account for much, not even understanding the balance required for a healthy planet. Greed has of course been the catalyst behind this negative impact. People have put personal gain ahead of their duty of care for the planet. It’s all about money, and no-one wants to give it up.

Much of the problems we face are caused by opulent societies creating a far greater carbon footprint than is viable and pollutant-causing over industrialisation. Also contributing are third world countries tearing down forests to survive, over farming to support huge populations and burning wood for fuel. All this is tipping the scales against our future survival.

Having looked at all this it appears we are deluded to think we are superior in any way. What intelligence we have as a species has been cancelled out by our arrogance. Money is the centre of this delusion. Money is only a means to an end, part of a system of scales and balances put in place to give equity to our physical lives. In essence money is an illusion, meaningless pieces of paper. It’s what it represents that has any meaning. But what we have turned it into, has even less meaning. We are superior? Look at the inequities in the world; poverty, sickness, war, dictatorships, racial hatred, religious disparity to name a few.

I ask you, if nuclear explosions decimated the world and you survived what would money, your new car, redecorated house or boat mean to you. Yes, not a damned thing. You see what is important to us has been set aside and we are all living in an illusion, a world where our real feelings have been overwhelmed by the physical processes of our present technical world. Our focus is on all the unimportant daily physical tasks and less on loved ones, family, friends and our responsibility to a healthy planet.

For our forebears the task was not as immediate, world populations and our impact on nature within controllable terms. However today we have overstepped the mark in every area of concern. We cannot control population, persist in increasing our carbon footprint and the distribution of wealth obscenely out of balance. What is worse is that superpowers spend huge amounts of money on armaments, continuing the trends of division by religious faiths, political ideologies and conquests for land and natural resources.

When will we realise we are lost, living an illusion. What is important to you?

I think more and more people are waking up to the concepts you talk about here. I hope that greater awareness will lead to the changes that must be made to correct our past mistakes.
