Aussies in America

Updated on January 15, 2016

I'm a Kiwi helping all the Australians in America? Here's the place to come to find your food and mates who speak the lingo.

Are you a lonely Aussie searching aimlessly around this country and the web looking for blokes and sheilas to reminisce about kangaroo steaks, shrimps on the barby, Fosters and how many times you've beaten us Kiwis in sports lately? I'm here to help youse jokers! There'll be a sprinkling of Clubs and Societies, good places to shop for your favorite foods and stuff - and pies which don't necessarily fall into either category.

Find an Aussie

Social clubs and/or places where your vowels are perfectly understood

There's quite a lot of social groups of expats here, often a combined affair, particularly of Aussies and Kiwis but also Brits and South Africans turn up too.

I'm listing ones who have good links themselves or would be able to put you in contact with a whole variety of interests rather than trying to include all groups and ones I just plain like for their friendly appeal!

There are also lot of informal 'clubs' at Pubs which promote or are owned by Aussies and Kiwis. Strange that. If you want a list of pubs on this lens let me know by contacting me or putting a comment in the guestbook.

California

See New England below

Colorado

OzDenver. About 250 Aussies and Kiwis and Ring-ins get together regularly to 'shoot the breeze'

OzDenver

Another Aussie group in Colorado with about 300 members. A few kiwis are members too. Lots of good stuff on their website. Most social events seem to be in Fort Collins. Aussies in Colorado

Florida

This group that looks alive and well is the South Florida Aussie Kiwi Club They also have a facebook page.

Indiana

A group based in Indianoplis but for all the state. A sporting and social club -includes Kiwis and anyone who has lived in either country. Theyhave a facebook page Indy Aussies

Minnesota

The Australian New Zealand Association of Minnesota has a great site filled with goodies and fun events. Based in the Twin Cities since 1972. Good links.

ANZAA

New England/Massachusetts

The American Australian Association has a very good website with lots of news from Oz and other pertinent stuff. The Association has two active branches - New England (Boston based) and California (LA). The Association has a strong business networking focus but has plenty of cultural and social events. It's a subsription membership. Also has an intern program for OZ and NZ graduates.

American Australian Association

New York

There is a branch of 'Internations.org' which is an expat group where you have to apply to be member. There's a free and paid level. Looks good for business and social networking. Has a blog for the whole expat group too across the world.

Australians in New York

Texas

A new club for Aussies and Kiwis has just been formed in Dallas/Fort Worth area, Texas. No website yet as far as I know. ,

Click here to contact The Kiwi Koala Club.

Also there is the long established 'Australian New Zealand Society of Texas Tanzot.org

In Austin, Texas - a well established Aussie Rules club. Also has a yahoo group of the same name Austin Footy

Also in Austin, there is a branch of MeetUp growing in popularity. Aussie Aussie Austin

Washington DC

Another branch of 'Internations.org' which is an expat group where you have to apply to be member is here. There's a free and paid level. Looks good for business and social networking. Has a blog for the whole expat group too across the world.

Australians in Washington

Nationwide

This site caters for ex-pat Australians all over the world. There's a lot about living in USA though.

Australians Abroad

Another cheerful site for all of USA with a chat room, forum and excellent maps with the whereabouts of all Aussies registered with them. You can even bring up a state map and see where everyone is located.

Mates Up-Over

Yahoo groups which have an active messaging forum, i.e current posts and over 100 members

Ozinmerica

This one for Aussies in Northwest America

NWAussies

Did you play Netball at home? This site has a lot of information and there are links to various regional clubs with their own websites. Lots of Brits, South African, Kiwis and Americans and Blokes!!

Netball America

For a more comprehensive look for Aussie Rules check out the national association sites. The one with the best directory of local clubs is the United States Australian Football League (USAFL)

USFooty

Someone asked me for a list of pubs but it would take up too much space but if you are looking for Aussie owned pubs and cafes or want to know where any Aussie musicians hang out check out Australian Festival's website and look through their Aussie Directory. The pubs section is only as good as those who bother to register their business, so it may not include all in your area. If you know of an Aussie owned pub etc and they're not on, let them know to put it there!

Business/Commercial Interest groups

Wanna make some $$$?

This is a select list of organisations or services that pertain to business interests which invariably also have good social events too.

The American Australian Association has stellar events, membership both business and social. Lots of Aussie wine flows at the events and famous people turn up. Mainly in California and New England

AAA

Be sure to check out if there is a ANZACC (Australian New Zealand American Chamber of Commerce) near you. They often are a great source of social events too. Known Chambers are in Scottsdale AZ, Georgia AT, San Francisco CA, Santa Monics CA, Honolulu HA, Chicago IL, St. Paul MN, Yardley PA, Houston TX, Seattle WA, Washington DC. To get details of specific Chambers go to this link at the Aussie Embassy website ANZACC Regional Chambers of Commerce

There is also the similarly named Australian-American Chamber of Commerce. The one listed here is in San Francisco and is often more commonly known as sfaussies (derived from their website link) Has some comprehensive links including links to similar societies and clubs.

AACC

Advance: Global Australian is a worldwide network hosting events and developing Australian commercial interests. Click on the link, look around the site, then look in Local Chapters and you'll find several active chapters in the USA. Some interesting social gatherings are also listed.

Advance

A useful link for helping set up your business structures such as licensing, shipping etc is

Australian

Based in Washington, this is a comprehensive store which sells all over the states.

Everything Australian

Is it animal, vegetable, mineral or........PIE?

A tribute to the Aussie Pie in America

I haven't included larger online stores who have a wide range of goods here or the ones which will be in the first couple lines of a google search - just giving a plug to the smaller operations located in different states across the country. Some can ship out of their home area.

Dub Pies

Craving for a real meat pie or sausage rolls in New York? If you live in NYC or are only a day away in terms of delivery these guys (the Down Under Bakery) might be just the ticket for a party.

The Australian Pie Company

Seattle, WA is the home of these guys. You can buy direct or get them shipped.

Not only meat pies but Sausage rolls. Located in Austin Texas but delivering nationwide About Australia They have a lot of other other food and Aussie items too including Vegemite!

Aussie Rules? - Nah. Rugby league is better and Rugby is better still!

Only thing Aussie Rules has got over the other is those nice short shorts!

Funny, KiwiGayle, you being from across the Tasman and providing this wonderful lens for we Aussies.

After reading everything here, I think you should be made an honorary Australian...if you'd accept such a title. (Wink.)

      Hey Gayle

Well well, i'm not so sure about making life for the Auzzies any nicer with your lens! Aren't we supposed to be arch rivals! Haha! Anyway, great lens, some pics would be great, perhaps you could check out this great lens called Basic HTML for Squidoo (or something like that), it helped me a lot! Speaking of which, I've just finished another lens tonight too, all about Feijoas! I was also surprised that no-one had posted one either! Very glad to be the first! Please visit and leave me a comment! https://hubpages.com/food/feijoas

      Cheers, Amy

I've only met one Aussie. He taught at my school for 3 months, decided American kids were crazy, and headed back home. I think the kids were an excuse. He was homesick.

      Great lens.

Hi I'm returning from 1 year spent living and working in London Town and I'm already planning my next working holiday. If you're a full time TAFE or UNI student in NZ or AU you can do a working holiday in the USA for 12 months.

This website is helping me to prepare for my trip and I just wanted to let you know that I am very grateful that you put this together.

PS - Don't believe the hype. Aussies don't hate Kiwis. Well I don't anyway :P

Nice idea for a lens, even if you are a kiwi, lol

I'll give you 5 stars anyway.

Hi champeen 26. Check out my other lens - Kiwis in America - you'll find a South Florida group there for Aussies and Kiwis. Come back here soon as I'm updating this lens in the next week or so and will add more clubs including this one.

Wayne - you could post a msg on mate up over, contact other Aussies through them - they've got a lot in Florida or through the South Florida group. Also google Aussie rules Florida and you'll find several foot groups who no doubt have a favorite pub or know ones owned by Aussies. Don't know any personally.

Really enjoyed these stories , Im a kiwi plodding around in the Carolina's (USA) which is a biggish step from Christchurch NZ. Went for a walk downtown one day ,not a big city where Im at ,although there are some huge shopping areas here ,anyway wouldn't you believe it , a lady working in this store said hey where you from ,you sound like my boss...hahaha she was from Christchurch too.

So fancy that meeting another kiwi in South Carolina, while I browsing through her store.

That was 3mths ago and Im struggling with the humidy and heat...I was originally born in Southland ,my poor Kiwi blood doesn't know what has happened to my thermostat....

Very cool lens! Hooking up with Aussies throughout America ... I'm tempted to think of a bad joke, but either way what a great idea and effort. The stories are also very enjoyable!

I was once asked if I was in Australian when I was in the States, don't really know how they came up with that as I come from the Forest of Dean close to the border with Wales in the UK. Still could have been worse I suppose at least the Aussies do win at sports on occasions.

Great lens - I used to know a bunch of Aussies when I lived up in New York, though I'm not one myself, and I don't think they all live there anymore... :)

@AmandaCraig1: Thanks belatedly Amanda. I've updated my lens and included your suggestions.but didn't include the Chamber of Commerce link as it doesn't work and I think I've covered links for the Chamber of Commerce under the Business Interests section on my lens. They don't list the Austin one either but have the Houston one and I think people could find out more through them.
