Because They Couldn't Pay The Rent

Updated on February 9, 2018

A Gringo who moved to Puerto Rico, Greg loves writing about the island he now resides on. He and Maria also wrote several bilingual books...

The last book I wrote and published is titled "Puertorriquenos Who Served With Guts, Glory, and Honor: Fighting to Defend a Nation Not Completely Their Own."

It is about the many Puerto Ricans who served in the armed forces. I would like to mention another one who served.

Miguel Ortiz Diaz was a 67 year old retired Army Sergeant who just recently died. The way he and others died was hideous.

Because the rent wasn't paid.

The Story

Miguel had served 20 years in the United States Army.

He had built a good life and they lived in a gated, upscale neighborhood in Guaynabo, Puerto Rico. He and his wife also had a rental home in Bayamon, Puerto Rico.

Miguel was forced to do something he really didn't like doing, but the tenants had not been paying the rent. Christopher Sanchez Asencio had an eviction notice filed against him since he hadn't paid the rent.

Asencio and his buddy, Jose Bosch Mulero hatched a plan. Hmm, with the right procedure, Asencio wouldn't have to move, or pay the rent.

Their plan nearly worked,

The Evil Plan

Asencio and Mulero gained entrance into the gated community where Diaz, his wife, his mother-in-law, and his two teenage sons lived. They resided in the peaceful Los Frailes community in Guaynabo.

These two men probably said at the entrance that they had the rent money for Ortiz. When they entered the home, they immediately gagged and shot Ortiz in his living room. They then made the wife and mother-in-law kneel as they shot them. Finding the two teenage boys (one 15 and the other 13), they attempted to shoot them also.

The guns wouldn't fire. They loaded both boys in their vehicle and while driving, one of the men was able to get a gun to work. He shot the 15 year old to death and they dumped his body along the roadside. The gun wouldn't fire to kill the 13 year old, so they stabbed him and dumped his body in a river.

The boy did not die. He managed to get to a neighbor and police were called. The boy is now in protective custody.

Pray for the boy

I am asking all prayers for this 13 year old boy.

Not only did he just lose his family to a senseless homicide, he is also in protective custody away from anyone who may possibly harm him.

All of this because the rent could not be paid.

It is a sick, sick world when murders are committed over such minor items.

Others Affected

Ortiz was a professor at Puerto Rico's American Military Academy.

Both boys also attended the Academy.

Many who knew the Sergeant and the boys are dealing with pain and anguish at this time. I also ask that you lift all of them up in prayer too.

Conclusion

The accused killers are both in custody with bond set at $8,000,000 each.

They are facing over 20 different counts.

Wouldn't it been better to just find another place to live?

My prayers go up for this unfortunate 13-year-old, the only survivor of this horrendous tragedy. Yes, the killers should just have moved.

All you need is just to read newspapers couple of days, think about it and realize that this world is going wrong way. Stories like your are more and more often.

What a senseless deed! Yes, finding another place might have been challenging, but certainly doable. My heart is touched for that teenage boy that God will comfort him now, and that he will remain sane and strong despite the memory of the hideous crimes he witnessed.

It is amazing what some people think they can get away with. Thanks for your input, and stay safe.

Hideous is definitely the right word. Why some individuals think actions such as these are reasonable actions to take is beyond me.

There is insanity in this world, without a doubt. The lack of compassion that I see some from people...the lack of self-control....the lack of humanity....makes us appreciate, I guess, the good ones that much more.

      Blessings my friend
