Border Patrol Agent Deaths

Updated on July 14, 2012

Brian Terry

Border Patrol Agent Deaths Continue to Rise

Border Patrol agents are coming under continuing attacks from both illegal aliens, bandits and drug smugglers. Border Patrol Agent Deaths have been an issue since they first started on an irregular basis in 1904 to stop illegal crossings. Since that time, 111 Border Patrol Agent deaths, in the line of duty, have been recorded. But, consider this; In 2005 there were 773 recorded attackson Border Patrol Agents in the US. In 2009, there were 1073 attacks! In fact, according to the article linked, there is a U.S. Border Patrol Agent attacked every eight hours. Let me repeat that, There is a U.S. Border Patrol Agent attacked every eight hours. That is an astounding statistic. Since the year 2000, 21 Border Patrol Agents have died in the line of duty. Three were killed last year, including Brian Terry (pictured).

Brian Terry and several other Border Patrol Agents ordered a group of illegal aliens to drop their weapons last December 15th in the Peck Canyon, northwest of Nogales. The illegals refused. As is procedure under U.S. Border Patrol guidelines, the Border Patrol Agents fired at the illegals with beanbags first, before firing the real thing. That's right, beanbags. What's that old saying? Never bring a knife to a gunfight? Well, that apparently is the rule of thumb for our Border Patrol. Unfortunately, the illegals did not fire back with beanbags. They opened fire with real weapons, AK-47s, mortally wounding Border Patrol Agent Brian Terry. Four of the illegals escaped back into Mexico, presumably. One was wounded and captured. Osorio-Arellanes is recovering from wounds he suffered the night of December 15, 2010. He has not been charged with the shooting death of Agent Brian Terry. He is simply charged with illegal entry and is awaiting deportation hearings. One agent dead because of a group of illegals doing whatever it is illegals do, which is breaking the law. That appears to be the only thing they are really good at doing (plus sucking social services dry in every state in this country).

How many more Border Patrol Agent Deaths must there be before President Obama decides to say "To hell with the open borders crowd, we have to defend our borders!" Does anyone seriously believe he will ever do that? I think I do remember President Obama extending his condolences to the Brian Terry family. But, if he was really remorseful about this Border Patrol Agent's death, he would see to it they don't have to use damn BEANBAGS as a means to defend themselves in the first place!!! This is an outrage. Are we more concerned about people breaking the law than we are the people enforcing our laws? What has happened to this country? How did we get so far off kilter? I hate to say it, but it all started under President Reagan's watch when he agreed to the first amnesty in the 1986 Immigration and Enforcement Act. In that law, President Reagan first agreed to amnesty to anyone in the country before 1982. That, to me, was the biggest mistake he ever made. It set up for more trials and tribulations for this country in the oncoming years. That includes the deaths of over two dozen Border Patrol Agents. President Reagan wasn't alone in contributing to this problem. Presidents Clinton, both Bush Presidents also did their bit also.

President Obama will be right up there with them on the illegal immigration problem if he is successful in pushing "comprehensive immigration reform" down the throats of the American people. He may just grant a full mass pardon for them all if he is defeated in 2012. Don't think that can't happen. But, let's also not leave out another major player in the illegal immigration and Border Patrol Agent deaths; the Mexican government. If the Mexican government was sincere in helping this country with this problem, they would put troops on the border to force illegals back to their homes. Instead, they give the illegals guides (to those that can read) to help them get across the border and what to do if they are caught. The Mexican government is as much, if not more at fault than all the Presidents mentioned. I am not going to put all the blame on the illegals. They see a pot of gold at the end of the rainbow and are running toward it. It's what they do and they do it in the millions upon millions each and every year.

So, it is really a three-pronged reason why our Border Patrol Agents are being attacked, why they are being killed. Combine all three and you have 21 agents killed in the line of duty since the year 2000. Can something be done to stop these attacks on our brave Border Patrol Agents? Of course it can. No illegals, even with AK-47s, are going to want to take on combat equipped and ready U.S. National Guardsmen at the border. Of course, even if this were to happen (which our overlords, the Mexican Government, would never allow), it would be of little consequence to the family of murdered Border Patrol AgentBrian Terry.

Beanbags as a first defense. Ridiculous! Ludicrous! Amazing! Unbelievable! It is an outrage for sure. I agree that granting amnesty only encourages more people to break the law. It is a never ending cycle. I did not realize that so many border patrol agents had been killed in the line of duty. certainly a dangerous job. My hats off to all those who serve our country. They should at least be able to defend themselves...and not with beanbags!

RC, and it now appears the Border Patrol's job just got tougher. Obama is giving amnesty (illegally of course) to around 300K illegal aliens in this country. Just in time for the election! But, this will mean more and more illegals will attempt to cross that dangerous desert country. It is dangerous for both illegals and Agents serving their country. I salute you in your efforts to protect this country. It is politicians like alleged President Obama who making things worse for our law enforcement.

I spent four years as a Border Patrol Agent. I can tell you stories about the border that will make your laugh, cry, and piss you off at the same time. It really is a depressing situation. I just posted a hub on this topic. It's not particularly well written but I intend to post the full version later on. Your frustrations are very relevant. Thank you for being one of the few paying attention.

I can't see why they are so blinded, and my husband told me a story that is so disappointing about this black guy, African America,anyway...he is absolutely against Obama but he said that most of the blacks will vote for him simply because he is black and not look at a thing he is doing. Can't they see he is half white too..maybe that is the mean part..I don't care, lets say it is! I want him out, we are all going to be dead, can't they see that? I don't understand presidents have so much control as to let this happen and you know that is the only reason they keep our guys in war so there is none to be right there at the border shooting rounds, that would stop it right now!

Polly, I just love it when you post a comment on my hubs...hehehe. You are so passionate about your positions. As for Obama; he knows if he loses the hispanic voting block, game over in 2012. For that reason alone, he couldn't care less how many illegals steam across the border or, for that matter, how many border patrol agents are murdered by illegals. It's true, the Obama cult members just won't admit it.

This is so awful! He will never do a thing I know, because he has his reasons. I hate that man and that is not a word I have used since...well..ever. I know it is wrong and besides that they may come for me but I don't care, he is evil in disguise and well not really even that, he doesn't care who sees what, no one can touch him. If he isn't the anti-Christ he missed a good chance. Oh I forgot that is probably why my score is plummeting since I am far from politically correct. I still want someone to say what Hilary did when went to Mexico with a bif wad of money, mu memory said billions to stop drug traffic and 600 million Obama got for border patrol, which he doesn't allow.

breakfastpop, There is no explanation for our government to give more sympathy and help to illegals who murder our law enforcement officers. And, yet, it does just that. I have no reason to believe it won't continue. Obama is more worried about offending hispanics than he is protecting our border from the horde that comes across in the dead of night.

I guess my post offended about 3 people. I lost 3 followers as a result. But, you know what? I don't give a damn. I will defend Americans and legal residents (the people who believe in the rule of law of this country and did things the right way) every day of the week and twice on Sunday. Thanks for the comment.

What an outrage. There can be no explanation for our government's failure to aggressively address this problem. Voted up and awesome.

Old Poolman, you are 100% correct. This is an outrage of unethical proportions. This death of a brave law enforcement officer could have been avoided. Why shoot beanbags as a first line of defense? Do officers go after Americans with warrants for their arrest with beanbags? In fact, in regard to the illegal who was wounded but not charged in the shooting, I always thought in America if you were with a group of people who are responsible for a death, you were as guilty as the person who pulled the trigger!!! Why are illegals given more rights than AMERICANS? Inquiring minds want to know.

This is an absolute outrage. Someone needs to explain to me why our government will not recognize this border problem and take the appropriate action. According to Napolitano, the border issue is much improved now. Where in the hell does she have her head. Obviously somewhere she can't see or read the news, and certainly not down here near the border. Ignoring a problem will never make it go away. And now we find out ATF allowed guns to make it into Mexico from the US, but they lost track of them? It is reported that one of these guns was used in the killing of Agent Brian Terry. Someone should lose their job over this, but that will not happen. Shame on them is all I can say.
