Make a Change

" If you want to make the world a better place, take a look at yourself and make a change." Michael Jackson

In the same country where children are starving, we have restaurants throwing away tons of food every day. Something has to be done NOW. What can be done though? Well for starters we need to spread awareness.Just because people are not aware of a problem does not mean that it doesn't exist.

End Hunger Network

The End Hunger Network was started in 1984 by actor Jeff Bridges. They have been working with the no kid hungry campaign to end child hunger by 2015.

If we discovered that another country was doing this to our children, we would declare war.

Tighter Legislation

Food-borne Illnesses are a big problem for the restaurant industry. For this reason health departments around the country greatly regulate the industry. Food must be stored at safe temperatures. Another rule of food safety is first in first out or FIFO. What this means is that food that was bought first must be used first. By following this policy closely you can keep track of what was prepared, when it was prepared, and when it was purchased. In America there are 566,000 restaurants. If each one only wasted only one pound of food a day this would amount to 283 tons in just one day. This would be enough food to feed 1.5 million hungry children. Restaurants must do more to eliminate food waste. If allowed to continue wasting this vast amount of food, In a years time American restaurants will have wasted enough food to have fed the entire United States at least once.

The Children are Our Future

There are nearly 17 million children in the U.S. that are not getting enough to eat. Half of these children live in families with 2 parents. Over half live in families with limited income but over the poverty line. It is one thing to be hungry and get up for a midnight snack, it is something else entirely to be hungry and wonder where your next meal is coming from.

"Show them all the beauty they possess inside, give them a sense of pride." Whitney Houston

Volunteer Toolkit

The Department of Agriculture has put out a toolkit designed to fight hunger. You can find the toolkit here. By getting involved in your local community you can make a difference in somebody's life. You can create projects to help feed children in your area. Then by registering them with serve.gov you can get more volunteers to help you.

Yes, I did see your comments, both of them, including the one about WWII. The number of people suffering and dying as a result of poverty in this, the richest nation in the world (so we're told), is incredible, unconscionable, and egregious beyond words.

Thank you Au Fait. Did you see the comment I left where I said that more Americans died from poverty in 2011 than in all the wars since and including World War II, combined.

Very glad to see that you are in the campaign to end hunger in the U.S. so that we can stop mimicking a third world country. Or maybe we're not mimicking anymore?

Voted this hub up, useful, awesome, and pinned to my 'Helping People In Need' board. I have also added a link in a prominent place on my hub, "Poverty Kills More People Every Year Than Either Of the Top Killers -- Heart Disease or Cancer.'

Thank you for putting a spotlight on this problem. Sharing with my followers.

I love hearing from you guys. Even those who don't agree with me. I believe in the power to express oneself. If it was not for negative comments the positive ones would not carry so much weight.

A pertinent and well-constructed article. The Jeff Bridges quote hits the nail on the head.

What is great about this world is that you don't have to agree with everybody.
