Canada; The World's Largest Prison

Updated on October 23, 2011

Prisoners in our Own Country

Taxed to death

As a Canadian citizen and small business owner, I have had the opportunity to see, from the inside out, how our government does everything in it's power to stop the growth of small and medium size businesses, despite being globally marketed as a democratic and capitalistic free society.

If you talk to any business owner in Canada and a large majority will agree, saying that they feel like prisoners in their own country because of all the bureaucracy, over taxation and red tape they have to go through in order for their business to grow and expand so they can pay their bills, feed their families, pay their employees and just pay their taxes.

For many, myself included, It's getting to the point that it's just not worth the headaches anymore.

Just one example of how our Canadian Government screws the small business owners is that if your company happened to make a profit last year and has to pay say, $5,000.00 back to the Government tax man, then the Government demands that money be paid in full immediately or they start compounding Interest on it daily, 7 days a week plus they are projecting that you will make at least the same amount of money next year so they want another $5,000.00 on the very first day of your coming fiscal year whether you make the same amount or go bankrupt. If you make more, then you obviously pay more.

Here's another good one. In my home province of Nova Scotia, our newly elected NDP Government is advertising on TV that Nova Scotian citizens are welcoming an increase in our taxes.

I don't think anyone asked me if I want to pay more taxes or anyone I know wants to pay more, plus all or provincial political servants just got busted for submitting tax receipts for reimbursements which included Sony Playstations, home furniture, video games, $2500.00 digital cameras, laptops for their kids etc. etc. etc.. At least now it makes more sense why they want to increase taxes.

Even after talking to hundreds of immigrants who make their way into Canada thinking it is the land of milk and honey, have admitted that if you don't know how to play the system, it is worse than prison because you finally have your freedom but you can't do anything with it. It is an extremely expensive place to live.

Canadian families that have owned properties for generations are being forced out of their homes because our government is raising their property taxes, sometimes 10 fold, forcing them to move out so foreign investors can move in and be over taxed to pay for the Government's over spending.

I know this is common practice all over the world but not here in Canada. For example, My friend was paying $790.00 a year in property tax on their small craft store and the next year it went up to $13,500.00. He had to give up his family home and business that was passed down through the generations for over 200 years because he couldn't afford to pay the property tax which some highly paid, government regulator decided to implement with the stroke of a pen.

There are two things that I truly admire about our American counterparts. Their patriotism and the support their government shows for small and medium size businesses, compared to Canada.

They understand how small & medium size businesses are not only the major employer in the country but also generate billions of dollars back into their economy which is all taxed. It boggles my mind why our Canadian Government just does not get it.

I'm not going to get into any of the thousands of stories I could tell you proving my point in this article but simply express or vent my frustration with what I see going on with our beautiful country and the way it is being run.

We are over taxed, over regulated and drowning in Government red tape, bureaucratic bullshit, while they collect their huge salaries and company perks all paid with Canadian Tax Dollars and we just keep taking it.

I love my country but it is being run into the ground by a bunch of low life lawyers, doctors and teachers disguising themselves as politicians who have no experience in the real business world yet control billions of dollars of tax payers money. It is a massive cash cow that is being raped by by these slime balls in suits.

When are Canadians going to stand up as a collective and say, That's It, we've had enough and force Government to start supporting our economical growth instead of raping it but as a society, we are so passive in our nature that we would rather stick our heads in the ground and hope it all goes away or pray it does not affect our own personal lives.

Canada is so wealthy in natural resources that there is absolutely no reason why we should be struggling through such economical hard times. Now I completely understand that there are third world countries out there who are suffering unimaginable horrors but this is Canada damit, one of the greatest and wealthiest countries on earth.

There are some great leaders in this country but very few are in politics. If you took some of our great business minds, sat them at a board room table, opened the books for the Canadian economy and said, here you go ladies and gentlemen, Fix It, I guarantee they would have our economy turned around in their first fiscal year but why would they want to do that when everyone knows big business runs Governments anyway.

I'm sure the first money drain they would eliminate is our highly over paid political leaders and their over spending practices. If I had an employee who ran my business like the government runs theirs, they would be kicked in the ass as I threw them out the door.

Politicians have their place in this world but it is not in business or controlling any kind of public funds. Stick them in a room, lock the door and let them argue all they want about global diplomacy amongst themselves but get them out of the business of running an economy.

Now saying that, there is one man out there who I and many others agree, should be our next Prime Minister and that is Danny Williams, the former Premier of the province of Newfoundland and I'll tell you why.

Mr. Williams made his fortune in business starting with nothing and accumulated hundreds of millions of dollars, long before he entered the political world and Newfoundland is now the only province in Canada that actually has a deficit of an average 1.5 billion dollars a year since he took power. In other words, the business of running his province is making a huge profit. What a concept. Running the economy like a business. Wow!

The reason being is that Mr. Williams understands business owners, the working man and woman and is not intimidated by corporate strong arm tactics which he has proven on many occasions when huge oil companies tried to strong arm this little province's off shore oil reserves.

I don't think they were prepared to deal with a man like Mr. Williams who had the balls and the brains to put deals together that were in the best interest of his people and not for his political future which is far more secure now anyway.

He has no hidden agenda except to do what is in the best interest for his constituents which is why he is despised and feared by many political leaders right up to and including the Prime Ministers office in Ottawa. It is no secret that Mr. Williams and Mr Harper, our current Prime Minister, have locked horns in public on many issues. Mr. Williams was even quoted o National TV saying that Mr. Harper is a crook and ripping off the Canadian tax payers

Now, I don't want this to sound like a plug for Danny Williams because that is not my intention but I feel that he is the type of political leader we need in power to take a stand and do what has to be done to turn our country around and take all these useless lawyers out of power but there is only one way to make that happen and that's if the people stand together and make it happen by voting for the right leaders.

I really hope something changes soon because for me and thousands of others like minded, we have had just about enough of our Government and are looking to sell out and move everything right out of the country and into a tax free haven in the Caribbean.

It is a publicly known fact, reported by our banks, that an average of 17,000 Canadian bank accounts are either being closed or the majority of their holdings are electronically transferred to an offshore accounts (tax free) in the Caribbean every single day. That's right, 17,000 a day, 7 days a week. With a population of 35 million, add up those loses.

What the hell does that tell you Mr. Harper? Instead of supporting economical growth and keeping the money circulating in Canada where it belongs, you are forcing it out of the country by over taxing everyone.

You know what they say about beating your head against the wall? It feels really good when you stop.

One last subject I would like to clarify for people who just don't quite understand the meaning of "Offshore Accounts".

Most people are under the misconception that Offshore Accounts are what big drug dealers and organized crime figures use to hide all of their illegal money and they do but in reality, an offshore account is just another bank account you open in a Tax Free Haven like the Cayman Islands or the British Virgin Islands in the Caribbean, just to name two.

It is perfectly legal and most of our big banks have branch offices located there but it simple means that you don't pay taxes in these locations and when you lose 25% to 45% +, depending on your tax bracket, of your hard earned money to over taxing like we do here in Canada, it makes offshore banking extremely attractive. It's just like opening an account at your local bank but only in a tropical paradise or offshore. That's it. Mystery solved.

We just heard from a very reliable source in the broadcasting industry that the Canadian Government sent a message to every form of media in Canada telling them that if they reported any negative information about the Government, Pharmaceutical or Oil Companies that they would be sued and their broadcasting license suspended until the courts decided on the outcome of the law suit. Whatever happened to Freedom of Speech?

That's it, I'm done ranting. Thanks for listening

Sorry to burst your bubble Mattie but it's no different here. University/College Tuition are going through the roof. The politicians are totally useless and just draining the systems sending our kids off to war and if the get killed over seas while on duty, the families have to pay for their funerals. Our heath Care? What a joke. Sure if you catch a cold or break your arm so can go to the emergency room, for now which is being cut down on hours so make sure you look at their schedule first before you do break your arm. Now saying this, I have been to many 3rd world countries that are in terrible shape than what we have it but for so called free wealthy countries like ours, it is being run into the ground by greedy teachers, lawyers and doctors disguising themselves as politicians and raping us and we just keep electing them back into power

Coming from the country under you, I can say that I would rather live in Canada with higher taxes than to live in the United States with lower taxes. At least you get something for your taxes. All we get are snarky politicians who can only manage to fight with one another unless they are using our tax dollars to send our children off to die in some foreign country. Our health care gives the greatest opportunity to everyone so long as they have lots of money but gives nothing to those who need it but cannot afford it. Most of us graduate from university in significant debt for the next 25 years. I would gladly pay an extra 10-12% of my income to get regular healthcare and a college education for my daughter that doesn't bankrupt us.

      Right on Eric,

Finally, someone agrees with me. I was starting to think I was all alone in this never ending battle. Now here is a man running his own medium size company in the natural food industry that also knows first hand the bullshit Government puts all Canadian business owners through. As I'm sure Eric knows all to well, Pharmaceutical and chemical companies cannot put a patent on all natural ingredients which means they cannot control the market which also means lost revenue so they force Government to squash the company or turn the screws on the markets and suppliers. The problem is that they are masters at the game and we are entering their arena so until we all stand up as a collective and make the changes, it will never end unless we make it end.

We are slowly starting to see changes as the buying public becomes more educated on what they are putting in their bodies and into the environment that they are forcing Government and companies to adapt but how long is that going to take?

Government is an enormous cash cow in tax revenue and is also extremely poorly managed. Any company in the world who misspent money like Government would be bankrupt within a year

If anyone out there wants a simply example of how corrupt the Government is just look at the cigarette industry.

Read the list of toxic ingredients listed on any cigarette package sold in Canada and although it costs our health care system billions of dollars in helping people battle the illnesses and addictions created by cigarette smoking, Health Canada still allows these cigarette companies to put whatever chemicals they want in them and if you want to know why, just look at the revenue generated from cigarette sales versus the health care costs.

What they don't seem to understand is that people will still buy cigarettes without the toxic chemicals added, which is still a big problem but at least it will minimize the risk of many other deadly diseases associated with this terrible habit.

Thanks for writing Eric. I really appreciate your input.

As a medium sized business owner in the health foods industry I agree. Our government offers us zero support. They put their nose into our business which they know nothing about. While ignoring dangerous food products, ingredients and additives that they know are toxic. These people have no training. They are not able to understand the system they work in. Our government is insane. There is so much corruption at the highest levels that everything is sold to the highest bidder at the cost of our health, social services and standard of living. If you like freedom do not come to Canada. It's just the nicest prison money can buy.

I'm based out of Canada so I can only give information on things I know about our Government. As a Canadian, we love coming to the US to shop or live out the winter down in the southern heat.

Everything is so much cheaper state side and your taxes are nothing compared to ours. A case (12 pack) of US beer costs $25.00 here when I can skip across the border and buy 30 for $10.00. That one really hurts. lol

You sure you're not talking about the U.S.? I always say 'welcome to America' when someone finally realizes the truth about our government but maybe now I'll say 'welcome to North America.

Thanks for the comment Tranquilheart. I don't know where you live but we are based out of Nova Scotia, Canada which is the highest taxed and lowest employment ratio in Canada. Ontario and BC just got nailed with the HST but we've had that down here for over 20 years, only now they are getting just a little taste of what we've been going through. Nova Scotia is my home and I love it here but we are getting taxed to death. Our federal, provincial and municipal Governments are making it nearly impossible for Born and breed Nova Scotians to leave our homes and forcing us off our own land so they can sell it off to foreign investors and tax them even more. Everyone has their breaking point, I'm just wondering when we will hit ours. I hope it's soon because something has got to change in this country.
