Child Pornography and Pedophilia

Updated on May 18, 2013

Recently, while sipping my morning coffee I opened the newspaper to get caught up on the daily news. That’s when I noticed the headline that read "Provincial raids result in 122 charges against 35 people, including some as young as 15”. I shook my head in disgust because although shocking, the headline was not unique. Almost every week I hear of someone getting charged with possession and distribution of child porn. The sick part is the perpetrators are usually people of influence and authority or someone entrusted with the care of children. In this instance, one of the men charged is a teacher while another is a well known real estate developer.

A few months back a Catholic bishop was held at the airport and charged with possession of child porn after security decided to check the contents of his lap top computer. The sad news doesn't stop there because closely related to child porn is pedophilia which is also rampant throughout society. A great example involves a decade long investigation that recently wrapped up with charges filed against former crown attorneys, top area officials and Roman Catholic clergymen for abusing several young native Indian boys and engaging in a system of cover ups.

It almost seems life an epidemic but I know all these things are coming to light because as society becomes more open and people realize that they are not the ones to blame for abuse by their pastors they are shedding the self guilt that they had once buried deep inside. It is self guilt that leads to such things as alcoholism, drug abuse, and a dysfunctional role in society.

Reflecting on the sad state of affairs in society one would think that with all the perverts that the police have jailed over the years that these dirt bags would give up their sick per-occupation and seek help. The common question that one might ask is, why are so many grown men sexually attracted to children? A conclusive answer to that question is not so easily attained however.

I like to offer contextual answers to questions such as the one I offered to someone on HubPages who recently asked how she could stop her husband from watching too much porn. The situation was upsetting her because both her and her husband were Christians and in her opinion his porn watching obsession was ungodly. I attempted to answer her question in a way that she could relate and possibly help her appear understanding to her husband instead of causing a fight.

I told her that she should let her husband know that God was using the devil to test him. God was only doing so because he wanted them to become stronger Christians. If her husband’s faith was strong enough he would be able to break the devils grip. A more secular answer would be for her to try to get him into counseling.

In the cases of child porn and pedophilia however, I am not so compromising. I don’t believe that pedophiles are capable of helping themselves. I believe in most cases it has to do with mental abnormalities that require medical intervention. So if you are one of those that cannot stop yourself from sexually exploiting children I hope that you know that it is wrong in any and all circumstances. I would advise you to seek help as there are many clinics that specialize in all forms of sexual addictions. If you continue to hide and thrive on your self-denial it is just a matter of time before you get caught and thrown in jail where you will be the one getting abused. It’s time to get help!
