Connecting the Bald Eagle to American characteristics

Updated on September 19, 2012

How does the Bald Eagle and what it represents as a symbol relate to what has been or used to be American characteristics. These characteristics include such things as strength, courage, freedom and immorality for generations to name a few. In terms of strength it is without question that the Bald Eagle represents strength but today there are concerns that the strength we once had has diminished. We have a country of which we should always be proud but in recent years the support of the military through legislation has dwindled. Some may say that this statement is not true but actions in Congress by some individuals give the appearance to back up this statement.

The Bald Eagle is the national symbol of our country. This decision was made long before any of us were born in fact it was chosen as the National Bird in 1782. Protecting this species of bird was established under the National Emblem Act of 1940. In the past the Bald Eagle was an endangered species and was therefore protected.

First and foremost I believe that most Americans support our troops but not necessarily their assignments throughout the world. Our military is one of the greatest organizations if not the greatest in the world. The actions or inactions by some individuals in Congress have made funding for the military a political issue. It is without question that funding needs to be examined for any government activity in terms of necessity but military funding should not be the political issue that it is today. The strength of our county involves the strength of our military and in the past reference has been made to negotiating from strength which also includes respect. Those who serve to protect us and sometimes give the ultimate sacrifice should have all the necessary funding to keep them safe as is humanly possible.

As a country we need to have the courage to stand up to our enemies and support our allies. Recent events where our troops or those representing our country have been killed bring up the question of courage and the inability to protect our troops from harm. Some facts are surfacing about the deaths in Libya but they are not being widely reported by the mainstream media. All citizens of this country deserve to hear the facts as to what failed in protecting those such as our Ambassador in Libya. We have many embassies in countries where it is considered not to be a safe environment for Americans. Those who serve and represent us in these areas should have the best protection we can provide in addition to what the host country provides.

Another characteristic which the Bald Eagle embodies which relates to a characteristic of our country is courage. We as a nation must have the courage to make the decisions necessary to solve our country’s problems as they are today but this courage seems to be diminishing to some extent with important decisions being pushed off for later legislative bodies to solve. The courage of those we have elected and those we will elect in the coming election must examine the courage the Bald Eagle displays in solving issues it faces on a daily basis such as its need for food.

In the past we as a country have had the courage to step into conflicts where it was in the best interest of our country but today it appears we do not have the courage to stay the course in several areas. The philosophy may or may not be justified. The American people and/or those who will vote in the coming election must look at the decisions that been made and the results in areas where we have chosen to leave or reduce the number of our troops.

The last characteristic embodied by the Bald Eagle is freedom. It has the freedom to fly where it needs or wants to survive in its search for food. Freedom is a word or philosophy that is used many times in our Constitution examples of which include freedom of the press free speech and freedom of religion. These three rights granted to us under the Constitution seem to be fading to some extent. Freedom of religion is under attack as evidenced by court cases and in some cases decisions by courts affecting the right of freedom of religion. Free speech is under attack through actions being taken in our judicial system. There are those who can say things which are true and be chastised for it while others who may say the same thing and the statements get ignored. Freedom of the press is also under attack though not as widely understood. Freedom of the press is an important right granted to us by the Constitution but that right has some responsibilities.

The freedom which the Bald Eagle displays should be matched by the freedom we as citizens deserve as noted in our Constitution. Today there are many restrictions placed on us as individuals through legislation and in some cases regulations which hamper our ability to achieve the American Dream. Granted some legislation and regulations are necessary but when regulations or legislation impede the freedoms the Constitution gives us it projects we do not have the freedom to the extent the Bald Eagle exhibits. When our country began people came searching for a new life with freedoms they could only imagine. Government at all levels must re-create the environment we had in the beginning and when it takes place we will exhibit the freedom embodied by our national symbol the Bald Eagle.

Thanks for stopping by and providing your comments. I totally agree with you. We need to be reminded more about the principles on which this country was found.

Very well done hub. I think our country should show our American symbol a little more to remind us all, who we really are, and the principles the United States was really founded on. Thanks for a great article. Rated up and interesting.
